“Come on,” David whines as he leans across the bed, resting his head in his hands as he faces you with a childish grin on his face. “just tell me what you want already, I’m running out of time over here.”
You roll your eyes as you focus on him. “Dave, I told you I don’t want anything.” You repeat yourself, having told him explicitly that you don’t want any presents for your birthday, nothing extravagant, nothing expensive.
“Everyone always wants something for their birthday though, Y/n.” David states, glancing over to Jason and Erin as they sit on the beanbags.
Jason holds his hands up in defence. “Don’t get me involved in your stuff,” Jason huffs, remembering the last time he got involved and it didn’t end well in his favour.
“Not everyone wants a big thing or celebrate their birthday, Dave.” Erin explains as you nod along, thankful someone agrees with you.
“Thank you, and on that note, I’m going to get food. Anyone want anything?” You ask around, seeing everyone shake their heads as you exit the room, closing the door behind you.
Once the coast is clear, David’s smile grows as he focuses on two of his friends.
Erin exhales heavily, her shoulders falling forward. “What have you got planned, David?” She raises an eyebrow as David merely shrugs his shoulders.
“No idea what you mean.” He comments back, but his smile does not falter.
Covering your eyes with his hands, David cannot stop his giggle as you sigh. “Where are we going, Dave?” You groan under your breath as all of your friends follow, cameras at the ready.
“Just a little surprise, that’s all.” He shrugs his shoulder as you’re led outside into the front where everyone holds back their excitement. “You ready?”
“As I’ll ever be?” You say half-heartedly, hoping he’s not done something stupid.
David tears his hands from your eyes and watches as you adjust to the sunlight before focusing on a brand new Tesla. His smile remains bright as Natalie passes him the camera, focusing it on you.
“Happy birthday!” David yells as all of your friends applaud you, but you remain scarily quiet.
You step forward, keeping your hands together as you clench your jaw. David watches as you run your hands over the car before opening it and taking a seat inside.
Letting out a small sigh as you sit in the driver’s seat with your hands on the wheel, you contemplate how to go about doing this.
“Well?” David leans in, his smile bright like a child’s as he struggles to see the apprehension in your expression.
“I don’t know what to say,” You force the words from your lips as David walks over and sits in the passenger seat, shutting the doors so it’s just the two of you and his camera. “you really didn’t have to do this.” You mutter as you shift in the seat, turning to face him so your friends can’t see you talking.
Immediately, David can sense a shift in your mood as he reaches over and turns his camera off. “What’s wrong?” David questions, focusing on you as you keep your eyes lowered.
“I told you I didn’t want anything for my birthday, Dave.” You remind him, and David chuckles under his breath.
“But everyone says that, baby.” He responds, still smiling to himself as you can feel your annoyance rising inside of you. “Everyone wants something, and I thought I’d surprise you.” His grin begins to decrease as you lift your head up, revealing a watery gaze.
Outside of the car, Erin sighs under her breath. “I knew this would happen.” She states, glancing over to Jason who stands back, his chin resting in his palm. “Did you know he’d get her this?”
Jason shakes his head in response. “He said he was going to take her for dinner,” Jason states. “never mentioned a new Tesla.”
“Can’t complain about that, right?” Zane pitches in, ignoring the evident tone surrounding everyone.
Back in the car, things are getting more heated between the two of you. “Y/n, I, this whole thing was planned!” David groans loudly, burying his head in his hands. “This was going to be my video for this weekend. SeatGeek is the reason we’re sat in this car and what? I just have to tell them my girlfriend doesn’t want a new car?!” His voice gets louder, and you shuffle toward the door as you blink back tears.
“David, I don’t love your money I love you!” You yell back, watching as he buries his fingers into his hair, gripping it tightly. “Why don’t you understand that?”
Rising his head up, you focus as tears fill his eyes. “I’m scared of losing you. I just, I thought you’d want this. It’s a big video, it’ll be something we can look back on but, but I guess not.” He mutters under his breath, disappointment filling the car.
“Don’t do this, Dave,” You speak up, reaching over only to have him shrug your hand off of his. “seriously?” You scoff, but he doesn’t react. “You know what, if you care about making my birthday a video, have it. Use whatever footage you’ve got. Thank SeatGeek on my behalf.” You tell him as you climb out of the car, forgetting everyone else is still watching.
“Y/n,” Natalie speaks up, stepping forward. “come on, just come inside for a bit.” She tells you calmly, but you shake your head.
“I’m going home, Natalie.” You tell her quietly, wiping your eyes.
“We’ll come over later, yeah?” She forces a small smile, only to see you shaking your head in response.
“I’m going home, Natalie.” You reiterate your point, glancing back to see David stood beside the car now, no longer cowering away. “I’ll be back soon.” You give her a smile before taking your phone from your pocket and walking out of the driveway, not daring to look back.
A few days had passed since your birthday surprise, and much to your amazement no video had been posted. There was no post, no explanation to fans. All you saw were questions and confusion as to why there had been nothing dedicated to you as David’s girlfriend.
You curl back up in your bed of your parent’s house, watching as your dog stares at you with his big eyes. “Don’t you start,” You tell him as he whimpers to you.
A quiet knock on your bedroom door catches your attention. “Honey?” Your Dad calls out, nudging the door ajar. “Someone’s here to see you.” He states, glancing over his shoulder before turning back to you. “You know a middle-aged man?”
Laughing under your breath, you nod as you sit upright.
The door is opened as Jason walks in, giving you a soft smile. “Hey,” he speaks up.
“How’d you get here?” You question, looking as his eyes wander around your room noticing the framed photos of you and everyone.
Jason takes a seat in your armchair, leaning back. “Natalie gave me your address,” He shrugs his shoulder. “she wanted someone to come check on you, make sure you’re doing alright.”
“I’m fine.” You tell him, barely convincing yourself let alone him. “I mean, I will be.” You change your mind, glancing over to your phone that won’t stop flashing with notifications. “How’s David?” You ask the question that has been dying to be responded to ever since you woke up at home in your old bed, seeing he hadn’t been in touch.
Running his fingers through his hair, Jason exhales heavily. “He’s not doing great, but he’s just realising what’s happened.”
You nod to yourself whilst Jason shuffles in the small armchair.
“The thing is Y/n, I’ve known David for a few years now,” Jason starts and watches as you focus solely on him. You take a hold of a pillow and cuddle it close to your chest, resting your head to prevent your tired eyes from drooping.
“And you guys are great friends, I know Jase,” You mutter and Jason merely nods.
“But my point is that I know why he does the things he does.” Jason begins to explain, catching your interest. “the reason he gives such amazing gifts is to make people happy. It’s something no one could normally justify doing and I know he thought deep down it’d make you smile. That the fear he has of losing you might just fade into the background.”
Sitting still, you process everything. “David is afraid of losing me?” You sit upright, throwing your pillow to one side. “Why would he even be worried about that?”
Jason shrugs his shoulders. “He’s always worried that he’ll be left. I think that’s another reason why he wants to gift you things, to show just how much he loves you.”
“Fuck.” You mumble, hiding your head in your hands as tears fill your eyes. “I’ve really fucked this up.” You state quietly, unaware of Jason shaking his head.
“You’ve both just reacted differently.” He reminds you. “You’re both different people, and I think you just need to talk to him.” Jason rises to his feet, perching on the edge of your bed as you shuffle closer, feeling him bring you into a hug. “It’ll be alright, Y/n.” Jason tells you softly as you wipe your eyes. “Just talk to him, okay?”
Arriving back into your house, you throw your keys onto the table as you walk in.
A small sigh leaves your lips as you look around, wishing he could be there waiting for you like he normally can be.
“Just, just call him.” You mutter to yourself as you take out your phone, shutting your eyes as you send the message and lock your phone, simply waiting for the door to open.
Hours pass you by and the evening starts to draw in closer. You keep looking at the door at the slightest of sounds, waiting, wondering and wishing he could just turn up. That now he’d actually show up, that he could do this for you.
Your eyes begin to droop as you reach for your phone, seeing no message.
Unable to keep your eyes from closing you allow your body to cave in. You shuffle to lie down across your sofa. “Five minutes.” You mumble sleepily under your breath, taking a cushion and holding it close to your chest.
Whilst you remain fast asleep, David pulls up outside of your house. He glances through his window, seeing one light in your front window. “You sure I should do this?” David questions to Jason who remains on the other end of the line.
“She’s been waiting to see you, Dave.” Jason reminds him. “Just, just give it a chance.”
Nodding to himself, David hangs up the line as he climbs out of his car and unlocks your front door quietly. “Y/n?” He whispers, hearing no response from you.
He glances back to the front door, unsure whether to go back out and give in. But the sound of your murmurs catches his attention and he turns back to face the living room and heads inside to see you curled up, your hair covering your face.
Kneeling down, he pushes your hair out of your eyes, smiling to himself at how beautiful you look. “Hi, baby.” He whispers, seeing you shuffle. “Come on,” He helps you into his arms, guiding you up the stairs as you remain in a dozed state.
Managing to help you to bed, David pulls your duvet over you as you snuggle back down. “David?” You whisper, opening your eyes to see him hovering beside you. Stretching your hand out, taking his and tugging him closer. “Please, stay?” You mutter and David complies.
He lies down beside you, pulling on the covers and curling up beside you. “I’m sorry, Y/n.” He mutters, but you shake your head.
“I’m sorry too, but I’m glad you’re here.” You mumble into the crook of his neck, finally feeling happier now that he’s back by your side.
