Woman Scream: Our Commitment Against Child Marriage in Brazil

Continuing our mission against child marriage, we gathered at the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, with partners in our cause. This event reinforces our dedication to childhood protection and the fight against early marriages, an initiative launched two years ago with a focus on schools, given the alarming increase in cases across the country.

Collaborators and allies of the 15th Woman Scream Festival (Grito de Mulher) convened in Brazil, thanks to our coordinator Soira Celestino, the festival's representative in the country, with the support of Deputy Maria Luísa, yesterday, at the Alesp premises.

The central theme of the event was "Child Marriage: It's Not a Game." According to research conducted by Unifecaf, Brazil currently ranks 4th globally in formal child marriages—a statistic that underscores the urgency of this debate.

The event featured the participation of the President of Associação Manas Pretas, who joined Ednusa Ribeiro on the panel to present the organization's projects and actions. Other committed institutions also participated, such as Bibli-ASPA Centro de Cultura, which showcased its project supporting refugee women and girls through art, as well as Plan International Brasil and other allied organizations.

Also present were Professor Carlos André, an activist for children's rights and a writer, and Dr. Cleide Aparecido Vitorino, whose intervention concluded the event with a profound reflection on the necessity of combating child marriage in our society.

We extend our gratitude to all institutions, activists, and collaborators who participated in this crucial event in defense of girls' rights in Brazil.

It means whispering lullabies through the sound of bombings to quiet fear, fleeing with nothing but what they can carry across invisible borders, and tending to open wounds with no medicine other than pure love and resilience.

Girls watch their childhoods disappear in an instant under the flames of war, but the unbreakable strength of women reminds us that peace is not a privilege to be negotiated, but a fundamental right that must be protected and defended.

When the weapons finally fall silent and the dust settles, they rise. They rebuild communities from their foundations, weave invisible networks of solidarity, and raise roofs where there were once only ashes. They are not trophies of war nor silent victims; they are the true architects of resilience and the guardians of one another.

Today, we raise our voices for women living in conflict zones, for their pain, their struggle, and their extraordinary resistance.

Many know her method, but few know her story of resistance. Maria Montessori did not only transform classrooms; she was a woman who chose exile rather than allow the fascism of Benito Mussolini to indoctrinate children.

Her life became a constant journey across borders. She fled from Italy to Spain, sought refuge in the Netherlands, and was eventually detained in India during World War II as an enemy alien. It was in that forced exile, far from her homeland and under restriction, that Montessori realized true freedom begins in the mind of a child raised without chains.

Maria Montessori proved that geographic borders cannot stop a powerful idea. She transformed her solitude as an immigrant into a universal gift: an education that recognizes no flags.

Perth Woman Scream 2026 is coming. Our annual spoken-word gathering connects Perth with the global Woman Scream (Grito de Mujer) movement, using poetry and art to raise our voices against violence and to stand with women and girls around the world.

This year’s theme, Beyond Boundaries, centers migrant women and girls and the realities they face when far from home. When language, money, and support systems fall away, being heard becomes harder. That’s why we keep choosing poetry to SCREAM, because silence gives violence room to breathe.

Woman Scream Canada 2026-Beyond Boundaries: A Vision to Build

An inclusive creative gathering for women exploring identity, resilience, and connection beyond cultural and social boundaries.

Renee Nicole Good spoke of a violence that does not scream. It happens quietly, in classrooms, in routines, in the way we are taught to look without feeling.

In her poem “On Learning to Dissect Fetal Pigs,” winner of the 2020 Academy of American Poets Prize at Old Dominion University, she wrote about the moment when wonder is stripped away, when a life is reduced to parts on a tray, and curiosity is separated from compassion. Her words speak to growing up in a world that often asks us to disconnect in order to learn, to analyze without tenderness, to accept quiet harm as normal.

For Woman Scream 2026, this poem echoes our cause of living “Beyond Boundaries”: questioning the limits imposed on empathy, refusing systems that normalize emotional numbness, and reclaiming a way of seeing that honors life, care, and humanity. Because crossing boundaries should never mean losing the ability to feel.
