Trouble's Always Gonna Find You

A/N: Meet Abe's son, Bonnie. Find other character studies on the American Teenager Masterlist.

Bonnie and his dad had no one left to leave and no one left to love after his mama died and his sisters raced to grow up. The Gold men became drifters who were neither trusted nor accepted in the small communities they called home for increasingly short periods of time. They moved twice during the year of the drought, eventually taking refuge in another piece of shit town in Mississippi.

The motel came cheap, but without a working TV or AC, there was little to do except stare at the mold speckled ceiling. It didn't take long for the suffocating heat and boredom to creep in, forcing the teen out onto the desolate country roads. But even in the still quiet, trouble found Bonnie.

One night in late June, he ran into two teens smashing out the passenger side window of a pickup. And because he wasn't doing anything else, he helped them clear out the valuables. Finn and Isaiah claimed the hunting rifles and Bonnie kept the handgun he found in the glove compartment. They spent the rest of the night shooting out the windows of the abandoned Winn-Dixie, drinking a case of beer they lifted on the way.

Driven by apathy, curiosity or merely a need for disruption of their mundane lives, the boys continued this way for the remainder of the summer. Bonnie was moving dope with Finn about the time his dad started shacking up with Finn's aunt. That's when the Shelbys gave Bonnie a room at Tommy's boxing gym.

Arthur and Tommy soon noticed that the boy with his father's strength and his mother's temper had real talent. Not only that, he was young and foolish enough to be tempted by the money earned throwing fights. It was a lucrative arrangement for the high school drop out so he agreed. At 18 he didn't need Abe's permission, but his father supported him nonetheless, if only to keep him from a lifestyle that would see him incarcerated or killed. Only time would tell if that had been the right decision.
