World building is world shattering

Creating fictional foods is really fun, but figuring out what can be produced in any given region actually answers a lot of super cool questions about the local culture, environment, and technology.

Is the land constantly flooding resulting in very little available soil? This would encourage a fish heavy diet, depending on if there are unique local flora there can easily be marsh farms, and early South American farming technology could be a wonderful reference point. How about a more utopian world with no stress regarding food access? Well homemade foods take on an extreme level of importance, likely being reserved for special events and cultural milestones. There's a lot more to this process but every detail should matter to make a world feel alive.

I'll be trying to post fairly regularly here. A mix of advice, answering questions, and just rambling in general about my thoughts on world building and character creation. I'm a fucking idiot, don't expect any true consistency, but I'm definitely going to try. A personal tip that I use when trying to decide the general temperament of a society is to look at their access to resources, their level of technology, and the portion of the land they inhabit. A society with a truly peaceful temperament can only be achieved when all three of these things are at least decent for the population. Conflict over resources is very straightforward, conflict over land is still relatively straightforward but starts to get into issues of territories which is a relatively different portion of world building. Lack of technology in perspective of other societies can cause either envy or fear both of which will lead to different kinds of conflict. It's important to remember, conflict doesn't mean war necessarily, social conflict is just as important to shaping the beliefs and behaviors of a character.

To start this account off right, I want to discuss WHY worldbuilding is so important to me. I personally have 80+ characters spanning a variety of worlds and genres. It's a personal project several years in the making and my goal has been to develop each world to the point the characters could actually live in them. The effect of culture, environment, and abilities on an OC's personality cannot be understated. I love crafting self contained stories, I almost think of my characters like pets in a terrarium- as stupid as that is. I'll be straight forward in saying I have no idea where to start in terms of specific advice, but this thought process applies across the board.

Hello, I... Don't really know how to run a general account but I am very hyperfixated on world building topics. It's been years of refinement and research on just the one subject. Now, I'm well aware I'm not an expert but I love helping with other projects and it's really the only way I'm ever able to discuss my own worlds since I'm pretty bad at actually writing stories. If I do everything right, questions should almost always be open on this page for world building consultation or questions about processes involved! At least at first this page is mostly just for friends anyway.
