The Shining Butterfly

My muscles burn and my feet are numb

My head begins to ache

My eyes are heavy and my vision fades

I am longing for a brake

  What if I stop to rest a while?

Shall I lie along the road?

My steps slow down at the thought

Of releasing this heavy load.

  But as I do the vultures perch

Up above my head

And from the woods the wolves emerge

Ready to be fed

  Yet somehow I still have to think

What really would be worse

To keep on moving with the pain

Or to rest in a peaceful hearse

  But then I see a butterfly

 Wings as bright as day

Its colors shimmer in the light

Only an arm’s length away

  When looking at this creature

My heart begins to sing

I forget the pain of this lonely path

If I could only touch its wing

  But as I reach with bated breath

I scoop up air instead

So I keep on running after him

And all the beauty in my head

  I don’t know if I shall ever

Reach that butterfly

But I am sure that I will crumble

If no longer able to try
