Day 18
We break them down to build them back up stronger than before
Seemed like a fine conversation until it wasn't. Good thing most bots are susceptible to following instructions. Should have figured from it not having many posts/likes.
Oh well, I might end up blocking messaging here.
WIPs are like cookies
Starting a new WIP always feels harmless.
You tell yourself it’s just one more idea. Something small. Something you’ll “get to later.”
Like reaching for one more cookie.
It’s easy to justify. It looks good. It smells right. It fits whatever mood you’re in. You take it, no hesitation.
Then another idea shows up. Different flavor this time. You don’t want to waste it.
Then another.
And another.
At some point you look around and realize you’re holding a dozen or more projects, all at different stages, all quietly asking for attention.
You’re sure you’re full. Absolutely certain you don’t need another one.
And then you see it.
That one idea that just… fits. The kind that feels like it might be the one if you just start it now.
So you reach for it.
Because it’s only one more.
Right?
Gimme, that writing of yours
This is why I'm starting fresh on my writing. Been a while and things need proper attention in a proper order.
Am I still working on multiple things at a time?
...
Yeah...
Reblog if you love “—” and have never used ChatGPT
I haven't ever used "—" in my writing, but I know I should in some situations. It's difficult getting past the assumption that people will assume it's from GPT though and so I still avoid it.
Maybe one day I'll use it.
"I was told you're a monster," the hero said.
"So they say," said the monster.
"But you're beautiful!"
"Thank you."
"Have you always been a monster?"
"Heh. I was a young maiden. But I did something forbidden."
"And became a monster?"
"Got named a monster."
"What did you do?"
"I hit back."
"The Dark Lord has taken over our land. What do we do?"
"Learn from the goblins."
"What? Those useless little-"
"Takes skill to mask rebellion as incompetence."
"What?"
"They know His reign will end. For now, they persist and resist."
"Oh."
"Also: remember every moment of joy is a victory."
Ugh, skill trees
Skill trees are one of those things that sound simple until you actually try to build one.
On paper it’s clean. A few branches, some progression, clear paths forward. Makes sense.
Then you sit down to map it out and suddenly everything connects to everything else.
This skill depends on that one. That one should probably unlock earlier. But if it unlocks earlier, it breaks the balance of three other things. And now you’re staring at a web instead of a tree.
I tried diagramming it.
That lasted about ten minutes before it turned into a mess of lines crossing over each other like I was tracking conspiracy theories instead of abilities.
At some point I stopped thinking of it as a “tree” at all. It’s closer to a system of pressure points. Shift one thing and something else moves whether you want it to or not.
Right now I’m just breaking it down into smaller pieces. Individual branches. Isolated paths. Making sure each part works on its own before I try to stitch it all back together.
Still annoying though.
Feels like trying to organize chaos into something that looks intentional.
Writer’s block rarely arrives with much spectacle.
There’s no dramatic moment where everything shuts down. Most of the time it’s quieter than that. You sit down, open the document, and the cursor just keeps blinking like it’s waiting for you to figure something out.
And you… don’t.
For a while I stopped trying to force it. Instead I went back through old folders and half-forgotten notes. Drafts from months ago. Pieces of stories that stalled out somewhere in the middle.
Some of them were exactly what they looked like. Dead ends.
But a few still had something in them. A line that worked. A character who never quite got their chance. An idea that just needed a little more space to breathe.
So I started cleaning things up. Sorting through the wreckage a bit. Keeping what still felt alive and letting the rest go.
Somewhere in that quiet work, the rhythm started coming back.
Now a new story is beginning to take shape.
Not really a continuation of the old ones. More like turning the page after sitting with the book closed for a while and realizing there’s still plenty left to write.
There are still worlds waiting to be built.
