heyy, how did u get into crocheting (or whatevr skill u used to make the periodic table blanket)? i wanna get into it, but i never started >_>
okay this is a terrible answer but i kinda just. started doing it one day. i watched a couple youtube videos and figured it out from there. i DID not pick a giant project to start off with, please dont do that. i made like. a square. or something like that. i would recommend starting off with granny squares or something similar!
okok not to hijack your post but if you’re the kind of person who tends to lose motivation when you’re doing something longer and more repetitive then don’t make your first project one with a bunch of granny squares! learning how to make a granny square is a great thing to do when you’re first learning but a lot of people think that means their first real project should also be made of granny squares and a lot of the time that sort of repetitive project kinda just makes you lose motivation when you’re first starting.
these are a few of the projects I started with or ones I’ve taught other people who were just learning how to crochet:
Leggy Frogs and other simple amigurumi/plushies (especially no sew)
Ribbed Headbands
Coasters (you can make them a plain circle like in this video or find a different pattern if you want something more creative)
Mug Cozies
but there’s a bunch of beginner friendly patterns out there for whatever you’re interested in, omazingpaige’s beginner-friendly pattern idea videos on YouTube can be somewhere to look if you’ve learned the basics and you’re looking for a simple project

Hey crochet people? According to two of the three LYS staffs I hold my hook weird. And I was talking to someone who is maybe starting to crochet. So I was thinking about it again. However, the LYS staff mostly knit. Im not making a poll just tell me if this is somehow weird.
Your response will have no impact on how I crochet. It works for me, but if there is a name for it, that’d be neat to know.
I hold my hook the same way and have been told the same thing!
I also teach people how to crochet (friends and family, not paid or anything!) and I’ve been making sure to tell people that how to hold the hook is based on your comfort. If you see another way and try that and like it better, great! Just be comfortable.
Honestly it’s my yarn holding hand that gets uncomfortable after long periods of crocheting and I’m trying to figure out how to combat that (cuz I have 2 more baby blankets to do and my coworkers are very fertile so I’m sure there’s more coming soon).
Looks like you use a pencil hold! A lot of people hold a crochet hook the way you would hold a knife with the handle resting on your palm, but some people like you two hold it more like a pencil. Maybe a little less common but not super weird.
