How To Publish A Story From WriteOn To Tumblr

Ready to publish your story to Tumblr? Below we will share exactly how to publish a story from WriteOn to Tumblr in two simple steps.

1. Write

WriteOn provides an easy to use, simple writing syntax called Markdown which allows you to easily format your writing.

The best part about Markdown is all major publishing platforms, including Tumblr, accept Markdown as a publishing format. So, your story will look exactly as you want it to when you publish from WriteOn to Tumblr.

With Markdown, the author is telling the editor exactly how they want their story to look when it is published using a simple, straight forward syntax. This ensures their stories look as beautiful as they read.

Now all you need to do is publish!

2. Publish

Before WriteOn introduced automatic publishing directly from our editor, authors had to copy & paste their story into each blogging platform's editor. This was too many steps and ended up being more of a pain than it was helpful.

So, we gave our users the ability to publish directly from within WriteOn to their favorite blogging platform including Tumblr, WordPress, and Blogger.

To publish to Tumblr directly from WriteOn:

Click "Publish" -> "Tumblr"

In the top-right corner of your window, you'll see three buttons between the story title and the Stories icon. Click the middle button to open a drop down with publishing options. Towards the bottom of the list, you'll see an option for Tumblr. Click it to continue.

Note: You can publish to WordPress and Blogger by following these same steps. Just click WordPress or Blogger on this step instead of Tumblr.

Enter Credentials

All WriteOn needs to publish to Tumblr is your Tumblr Blog Hostname. It will likely be example.tumblr.com. Or, if you have a custom domain, something like blog.example.com.

Additional publishing options include: Update Existing: Provide a post ID and we will update that post with the most current version of your story. Visibility: Is your story not ready for your followers? Select 'Draft' and we will send your story to Tubmlr as a draft. Format: Tumblr accepts a number of different writing formats. Choose from Markdown (our personal favorite), HTML, or choose a custom template from WriteOn's templating engine.

Connect With WriteOn

WriteOn wants to make sure that only people that are able to post to your Tumblr can. So, WriteOn needs to verify your Tumblr account the first time you publish. After you connect WriteOn to Tumblr, you won't have to do it ever again.

Why Author's Should Use Markdown

Most authors are used to writing in a WYSIWYG editor ("what you see is what you get" or wizzy-wig) which relies on large rows of buttons and drop downs to give an author the ability to style their writing. Using a WYSIWYG editor was once the only way most authors could style their stories. That was until the creation of WriteOn and in-browser Markdown editors.

What Is Markdown?

Markdown was created in 2004 by John Gruber with the goal of enabling people "to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format, and optionally converting it to structurally valid HTML”.

Markdown was introduced to help authors & content creators focus on writing while designers & developers focus on giving content a consistent, great look. Now, we know most authors are in charge of their own Author Platform and typically either hire a designer/developer or buy a pre-built theme and install it themselves, but even so, there are still reasons to transition from a WYSIWYG editor to a Markdown editor.

Consider this: Every time a button is clicked in a WYSIWYG editor it has to detect and decide where and how to implement HTML tags and their styling. These assumptions are made on pre-decided rules inside the WYSIWYG and can lead to unwanted results and invalid HTML. When a story is published from the WYSIWYG the HTML and styling may be invalid which can make a story can look "off".

With Markdown, the author is telling the editor exactly how they want their story to look when it is published using a simple, straight forward method. This ensures their stories look as beautiful as they read.

What Is An Author's Platform?

A few years ago, our co-founders (Joel and Tyler) took some time off to travel. They were brain storming how they wanted to write more and consult less, and even talked about building a publishing company. They went their separate ways and traveled over 25k miles, only to come together with a frustration of all of the manual work that went into building their Author Platforms. Even as techies, they just wanted to write. And so, WriteOn was born as the first ever automated Author Platform.

We've all heard the term Author Platform, but what does it really mean and how can it help us, as authors, to be more productive?

Distraction-Free Writing

As author's, our focus is to create quality, engaging stories that will resonate with our target audience. It's easy enough to lose focus from outside distractions, but when it's from the interface-heavy editors we use everyday, it can become a problem. So, WriteOn created a simple, yet elegant interface that gives authors a clean and simplistic writing environment. Only the most important tools and features made the cut which reduces distraction and lets authors focus on what's important: writing.

For starters, we’ve eliminated all the extra styling bars most editors have and focused on the most important features. We've also given the ability to style anything you write directly in your story using Markdown. There's no need to even take your hands off the keyboard anymore.

Throughout our development process we continually focus on how we can increase any author's productivity.

At some point, an author will need to publish their story. Typically, especially as freelance authors, we will need to publish multiple stories to multiple sources, whether it be a blogging platform, a magazine editor, or a publishing house. This can become time consuming and a huge pain when each source requests a specific format.

When WriteOn loads for the first time, storage is created in your browser that remains there even after you refresh the page, close the tab, or shut down the browser. You can even shut down your computer and the storage will still be around. From there on out, your stories are continuously auto-saved to that storage located in your browser.

Local Storage is available for almost any browser, including most mobile browsers, so no matter what device you're using, you can have peace of mind knowing that your work will be safe and secure in WriteOn.

In-Browser Editor vs. Desktop Editor

Many of us love to write, and why wouldn’t we? It’s an amazing activity that allows our ideas to be shared with the world.

There are two main ways to capture our thoughts with technology: desktop editors and in-browser editors. The question is, which one can boost our productivity while writing?

Desktop Editor

Desktop editors, like Scrivener, Microsoft Office, and OpenOffice, utilize mobile counterparts that, with the help of syncing, share content from one device to another.

It’s a doozy and perhaps the most beautifully crafted version of the online typewriter - ever.

Argon (version 1.7.x) is all about fresh, clean, and simple. Everything we are focusing on in this release cycle is about making your writing experience even better, more productive, and simpler every day. This next batch of changes are sure to keep you coming back for more.

Fastest Auto-Save Yet

We recently clocked our auto-save engine at saving every .0000006 seconds or 1 * 10-8 minutes for you math geeks. We tried to lose our work, we really did, but we just couldn’t do it. With WriteOn, you’ll never lose more than 4 characters if the battery on your laptop dies while you were typing...that’s pretty amazing and probably the best in the world.

Cleanest Lines Yet

From now on - when you open WriteOn - you will just see your story (or poem, essay, report, article, post, tech document, love letter, letter to congress, or whatever it is that you write). We removed even more distractions from the writing experience, but kept all the features you love. The “live view” dual panel is still available, but you have to open it manually now. The action bar at the top is cleaner and more usable, and we generally cleaned things up a bit. We love features, but we love focused writing even more. 

Recovery Made Easier

We’ve started to make local recovery of stories and settings even easier.  If you open your Settings & Preferences and go to Utilities, you will the button WriteOn Recovery. This will open the recovery tool which will auto-save and download your settings and stories. This allows you to keep a backup in case anything were to happen to your local cache, which would disrupt your stories & settings. Just use the Import Stories & Settings in Utilities to recover.

OK, so this is a special treat we are throwing in because we ♥ you. We are passionate about helping +Markdown become a writing standard, doing away with the need for HTML editors on the web. But our passion runs deeper, and it’s to make sure that WriteOn is the best writing experience, not the fanciest or one most difficult and full of useless features. To further our goal of creating a distraction free writing experience, we've completely redesigned how to access Story actions. Instead of an intrusive slide out panel, we've put the most important Story actions right in the header, always in view, ready for your tap, swipe, or click.

Settings Are Sexier

Yup, settings can be sexy. You no longer have to worry about leaving view if your story while adjusting your settings, since we optimized the main menu and reorganized the settings. You can even admire your story from behind your settings, if you so desire.
