Notice how many of the Olympic athletes effusively thanked their mothers for their success? “She drove me to my practice at four in the morning,” etc. Writing is not figure skating or skiing. Your mother will not make you a writer. My advice to any young person who wants to write is: leave home.

raise your hand if you’ve ever felt personally victimized by a poorly written, forced, love triangle
Bad writing is frustrating, but it’s important. You have to have that comparison of “Yeah, this isn’t good at all” to know when you’ve done well, or at least better. Sometimes bad writing can be a way of clearing the clutter from your head, so you can focus on the really meaty bits. So yes, knowing your writing is going badly sucks, but sometimes you have to write through the crap to get to the good stuff.
Edit: This goes for you artists, too!
if you really like a book don’t look at the goodreads reviews. just don’t.

Fun fact: until 1970, the DeWitt Building in Ithaca was the DeWitt Junior High, and before that, DeWitt High School. The mural on the old library doors remains.
