Long Grown Feelings: part 3 (Cracky/Fluff)
A/N: Hehehehehe, torturing with fluff and pining makes my powers grow STRONGER! I WILL BE UNSTOPABLE! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Btw, Whiskers’ favorite is wet food! I know, I spoil my imaginary cat. And she has a play date with Klunk tomorrow, so if you keep her until then, just know that Mikey will drop Klunk off tomorrow evening so they can play. Anyway, enjoy!💜
Warnings: Long, Donnie has a bad morning, big brother Leo talking sense, Mikey almost chokes, and Raph praises the skies.
Donatello had almost no sleep that night. We finally had fallen asleep, he had dreamed of you. He had dreamed of the two of you standing on your fire escape, your lips so close he could feel your breath on him, arms wrapped around in a way you had never held each other before. Donnie remembered how his fingers almost dug into your sides, eager and desperate to feel your lips on his, while your fingers seemed to draw small and slow figures on the back of his neck, making him shiver and sigh for you. You were so close, your lips almost touching, when suddenly-.
Donnie woke up in his bedroom, already searching for you, wondering where you had gone and why you weren’t on the fire escape anymore. That was when he realised it was nothing but a dream, causing him to slam a fist into his mattress, before throwing his pillow over his head, screaming into it. How dared his own head be so cruel to him. It was almost like the universe had fun torturing him with his own emotions, watching him struggling with his strong feelings for you.
Donnie looked like a mess when he headed to the kitchen, in order to get some breakfast. Leonardo was already up, sitting by the kitchen table with a bowl of cereal, watching as his little brother entered the room like a zombie, heading straight for the fridge. No good morning, no nothing. That wasn’t how Donnie usually behaved in the morning…
“What did (Y/N) do to you last night?”, Leo asked. “Looks like you have been through hell and back”.
Donnie almost caught his finger in the fridge door, letting out a small yelp as he pulled his hand back, making sure he still had all three fingers on his hand, mentally curing Leo for saying such a thing.
“Nothing”, Donnie answered, placing the milk on the table before turning to find another bowl and a spoon. “I just couldn’t sleep”.
Leo chewed his cereal thoughtfully, as he watched his brother head for the cereal in the cubert, raising a brow muscle at him. His little brother may be a genius, but he surely wasn’t fooling Leo.
“So the fact you and (Y/N) watched a movie together last night has nothing to do with it?”, Leo asked.
“No”, Donnie grumbled, as he poured the cereal into the bowl, taking Leo slightly by surprise. Donnie sounding like Raph in the morning? That was new. But still, Leo knew his brother too well, and no matter how hard Donnie tried to hide it, Leo could still read him like he always had.
Leonardo wasn’t stupid, he knew about Donnie’s strong feelings for you. It was obvious to anybody watching the two of you, that you were each down bad, to the point you were both blind to the other’s affection. It was enough to drive anybody around the two of you crazy. Once Raphael almost slammed his head into a wall, due to just how oblivious you and Donnie were. Donnie had brought your favorite food to the lair once, causing you to jump at him, hugging him tightly, talking out loud about how Donnie was the best friend anybody could wish for. Donnie pretended not to be saddened by your use of the word ‘friend’, while Raph - standing out of sight - made choking motions at the two of you, before grabbing onto the pillar beside him, throwing his head back like he was about to smash it into the stone. Luckily he decided against it, headbutting the punching back instead, the sound so loud it made you jump in Donnie’s arms.
There was also this once time where Leo, Raph and Mikey were watching the two of you from the couch. Donnie was walking you out of the lair, his arm hovering awkwardly behind you, as if he was trying to muster up the courage to place it on your back. Then you turned, causing Donnie to quickly retract his arm, making all of his brothers groan in annoyance as they slid down the couch. Both you were - as beautifully as Michelangelo had put it - pinning pine trees. That had now turned into what the brothers used to describe you and Donnie as; the pine trees.
“What did you do last night anyway?”, Leo asked, deciding to try out another tactic to figure out what had turned his brother into a morning gnome. “The only reason I knew she was here was because I heard you talk, but that was after I had gone to bed”.
“We watched a movie”, Donnie answered, poking at his cereal as it began to go soggy in the milk, avoiding looking up at Leo.
“That late?”, Leo asked. Donnie shrugged. “Did she sleep over?”
“No, I walked her home”, Donnie answered, finally taking a spoonful of his cereal. “She hadn’t told her parents she would be going out that late, so she wanted to sneak home before they noticed”.
“No. Her mom caught her”.
“Did she get in trouble?”, Leo asked, making sure he sounded like a worried older brother, that just wanted to make sure his brothers and their friends were okay, and not because he was invested in you and Donnie’s building relationship, and knew Raph and Mikey would eat up every single detail later. And well, also because Leo was a worried older brother, but that was beside the point.
“Didn’t sound like it, so I don’t think so”, Donnie answered, once again poking at his breakfast with his spoon. “A little bit of a scolding, but not much more maybe”.
“Ah”, Leo said, studying his brother’s posture. Sad. That was the best way Leo could describe it. Curling inwards, eyes not moving from the cereal, elbow in the table and shoulders tense. He normally never looked like that the day after having out with you, making Leo’s worried older brother side come in stronger than before. Something must have happened. Something that seemed to be eating Donnie up inside. And Leo just couldn’t have that.
“Donnie”, Leo said, leaning further over the table. “Be honest with me. I can see that something’s wrong, and I would very much like to help. Did something bad happen last night? Did you and (Y/N) fight or something?”
Donnie shook his head, chewing the inside of his cheek, no longer hungry for the cereal in front of him. Honestly, the thought of eating at that moment made him feel sick. Almost as sick as he felt last night…
“No, we didn’t fight”, Donnie said. “And nothing bad happened”.
Donnie’s mind was raising and his heart was beating. He had never told any of his brothers about his feelings for you. Never told them and never thought about telling them. So to tell Leo everything… Oh gods, what if he laughed? What if Leo made fun of Donnie, and told him what he always knew to be true; he wasn’t good enough for you. You weren’t interested in him, and Donnie was pathetic for even thinking about you in that way. But… Leo was his brother. Leo had never said such a thing to Donnie. So why would he say such a thing now? And that was the thought that allowed Donnie to finally tell another soul about his feelings about you, or at least hint at them.
“I think…”, Donnie said, now focusing on the surface of the kitchen table. “I think we would… uhm… If (Y/N) hadn’t caught her, then I think we would have kissed”.
“Wait, what?”, Leo asked, his eyes widening and his mouth gaping open. A breakthrough! Finally a fucking breakthough! After three fucking years of the pine trees dancing around each other, something finally started to happen. And Leo almost couldn’t contain his excitement. “How!? What happened!?”
“I don’t know!”, Donnie exclaimed in a panic, finally looking up at Leo, his arms moving wildly as he finally allowed his build up emotions to spill out. “We watched the movie together, I thought things were starting to get weird and I feared she felt awkward about the movie or something. So I walked her home, helped her up the fire escape, and tried to apologize about the movie, but she said she liked the movie, and then she held my face and I held her wrist, and we got close and- and- and- then her mom started calling for her!”
Leo blinked a few times, taking in all the information. “What hell of a movie were you watching?”
“That new action movie with mountain climbers”, Donnie said, already feeling embarrassment build up inside him.
Leo looked dumbfounded. “The one with the extra long drawn out kissing scene in the cave?”
“Oh my god”, Leo said, pulling his hands down his face. May the spirits give him strength. “How did she react to the movie?”
“She kept looking at me”, Donnie mumbled. “I think she even caught me looking at her…”
“Dear lord, Donnie. And I usually call you a genius”, Leo groaned, rubbing his temples. “Of course she looked at you! It’s a kissing scene! She wanted you to kiss her!”
“What!”, Donnie exclaimed. “Don’t joke about that stuff, Leo. I don’t think I can handle that”.
“Donnie”, Leo sighed. “When someone keeps looking at you throughout a kissing scene, that’s because they want to kiss. And if they hold your face on a fire escape and get closer, that’s because they want to kiss!”
“Oh God, I’m an idiot”, Donnie said.
“Normally I would be nice and say, ‘no Donnie, you’re smart, and a genius’, but this time I have to agree. You are an idiot”, Leo agreed.
“What am I supposed to do now?”, Donnie asked, almost sounding desperate, eager to finally get what he had dreamed of for so long.
“Are you seriously asking me that right now?”, Leo asked dumbfounded. “You go tell (Y/N) how you’re feeling! Right now!”
“But it’s almost daylight!”
“Then you better make it there fast”, Leo said sternly. “And I’m not suggesting it like your brother, but ordering you as your leader! Go tell (Y/N)! Now!”
Leo didn’t have to say more. Donnie stood up from the chair so quickly that it almost tumbled over, before running for the exit so fast, he almost caused Raph and Mikey to fall over each other as he rushed past them, not answering when they called out for him, asking him what was going on.
Raph and Mikey entered the kitchen, finding the overturned chair, and Leo still seated at the table, looking like he was rethinking life.
“Jess, what was all that yellin’ about?”, Raph asked, while Mikey pulled the orange juice from the fridge.
“(Y/N) and Donnie almost kissed last night, but Donnie somehow managed to fumble it, so now I’ve ordered him to go to her place and get it done”, Leo said, once again rubbing his temples while Mikey spat out the orange juice in surprise.
“Fucking finally!”, Raph yelled out loud, lifting his hands like he was trying to praise something in the skies, while Mikey tried to cough up the orange juice that was stuck in his throat.
Donnie landed on your fire escape while the sun was still rising in the horizon, casting a pink glow on the sky. With nervous feet tapping against the metal of the platform he was standing on, a heart that was beating so hard, Donnie was sure all of New York could feel it shake the ground, and arms shaking so much that he was almost too scared to knock on your window. But he did, much louder than he had expected, taking himself by surprise. He knocked again, still shaking badly, knowing that he was most likely the one waking you up.
A short moment later the curtains of your windows were pulled to the side, and your tired face looking out to see what was going on. You were still in your pj’s, with your hair a mess, your eyes squinting in the dim light coming in from the outside. The sight was so adorable, that Donnie almost tumbled over the back of the fire escape.
Your tired expression disappeared as soon as you saw it was Donnie, before you pushed the window open, allowing yourself to step out on the metal stairs on your bare feet.
“Donnie?”, you asked confused, sliding the window shut behind you. “What are you doing here? It’s almost morning. Someone could see you!”
“I’m here because I have something important to tell you”, Donnie said, sounding like a nervous wreck.
You looked even more confused, but with the pink glow in the sky, and the light breeze in your hair, Donnie felt the butterflies in his stomach come to life once again.
“What is it, Donnie?”, you asked.
Donnie couldn’t think straight, and he almost felt like he couldn’t control his own body. He felt sick, excited, terrified and manic all at the same time. All he could think about was just how pretty you were in the morning light, and how sweet you looked bare foot in your pj’s. So without thinking, Donnie did what you had done to him the night before, and took your face in his hands. You gasped out loud, your eyes widening, staring up at Donnie. You then did what he had done, grabbing on lightly to his wrists, so that Donnie could feel the way your hands and arms were shaking.
“You remember that movie I showed you?”, Donatello asked, his eyes slowly moving over your face, taking in every single detail. You nodded, letting out an almost silent ‘yes’, looking at him like he looked at you. “When he told her she was beautiful, do you know what I’ve always wanted to say to you?”
“No one is as beautiful as you”, Donnie finally said. “I’ve always thought you are beautiful”. The only way Donnie could describe your expression was pure shock, just staring at him while you processed his word again in your head, just to make sure you heard correctly. “I have had a crush on you, ever since the day I first met you, and you thought I was just a figment of your imagination”.
“Donnie…”, you whispered.
“I like you, (Y/N). I dream about when I finally sleep, but most nights I can’t because I can’t stop thinking about you”, Donnie confessed, feeling his heavy heart become lighter and lighter in his chest. “I love you, (Y/N). And I don’t know if you feel the same way about me, but I-”.
Donnie’s mind blanked, the words he was about to speak gone the moment he felt your lips on his, keeping him frozen in place. He was wide eyed for a moment, while his mind raised to keep up with what was happening. With a sigh, Donnie finally started to relax, melting against your lips, his hands no longer shaking as they came to rest more securely on your cheeks, while you pulled him closer with your hands on the lip of his shell.
There was no loud score of music, letting whatever invisible audience know the importance of what had just happened. Instead there was just silence. Silence only broken by the sound of your lips disconnecting, only to connect in yet another sweet and slow kiss.
You slowly disconnected from the kiss, allowing Donnie to rest his forehead against yours, letting out yet another sigh, his eyes closed as his overworked heart and brain finally was able to relax. You let out a small chuckle, before holding on to Donnie’s wrists once more.
“I love you too, Donnie”, you said, causing the love truck turtle to look at you once again. “And I would love to keep standing out here with you, but it’s only getting more light”.
Donnie looked up, seeing that the pink and orange sky was slowly turning blue.
“That’s not good”, he said. “If I’m quick, then maybe I can get back home before it gets too light”.
“It’s already too light”, you chuckled, before turning towards your window, sliding it open. “Come, you can stay in my room until it’s dark”.
“Are you sure?”, Donnie asked. “What if your parents see me?”
“You’re a ninja and they are oblivious humans. I’m pretty sure we can make it work”, you said, swinging one leg into your room. “Plus, we have years worth of kissing to catch up on”.
“Well, when you put it like that”, Donnie smiled, following you through your window and into your bedroom, before pulling it closed behind him.
