"go away, cas."
he sighed, staring up at the ceiling as if all the answers were scrawled up there in enochian.
occasional conflict is a normal part of healthy relationships. during adolescence, arguments with friends and family happen from time to time, but they are usually quickly resolved. developing strong conflict resolution skills as a teen is an important part of maintaining healthy relationships throughout later life.
however, some teens struggle to cope with interpersonal conflicts and may start to pull away after an argument. while occasional withdrawal is a natural response, when they are consistently withdrawing after conflict, teens may be struggling with a deeper issue.
a deeper issue.
well, fuck.
you were roughly the same age as claire, and you were one of cas' first rescues since (unofficially) moving into the bunker. your parents were out of the country at the time, and while you had initially been sceptical of his existence (which resulted in a very uncomfortable conversation about where the fuck god was in all of this), he supposed being the first one on the scene (perks of being an angel) and hence the first one to get you to safety and heal you, staying with you and comforting you until sam and dean had arrived.
well, long story short, everyone in the bunker (especially dean) considered the two of you to be family.
cas, meanwhileโ
"hey," he heard sam's voice from somewhere above him (when had he wandered into the main room?), glancing up momentarily to see him and his brother descend the stairs with mirrored. "where is everyone?"
"out on missions or supply runs," he sat at the table carefully, keeping the book under his trenchcoat (he'd rather not have the winchesters knowing about them, he could deal with it, he had to, heโ)
"you're back," he acknowledged, "how was it?"
"those ghouls didn't stand a damn chance," dean grinned, rolling his shoulder, "saved a few families while we were at it, too."
"dean, you screamed when the ghoul appeared."
"did not!"
"yeah, you did. was kinda funny, too."
"it was notโcas, you gotta believe me, man," dean turned to the bemused angel, "sammy's spewing lies to you.""
"i see," he returned to his book as they continued arguing.
research shows that adolescents often have strong emotional reactions to interpersonal conflicts. these conflicts can be with parents, family members, friends, romantic partners, teachers, and other important people in their daily lives. there are different ways of coping with interpersonal conflict, including both adaptive and destructive behaviours. some of the most common destructive coping strategies are:
- becoming defensive;
- withdrawing from social situations; and
- avoiding conflict altogether.
"hey," sam stretched, glancing around the otherwise-empty bunker, "where's [name], by the way, i found a book i thought they might like?"
"their room," he said, more curtly than he had intended. thankfully, neither seemed to notice.
"whatcha readin', anyway, cas?" dean squinted, reaching over to snatch the book out of his hands ("heyโdeanโ") and raising a brow at the cover, "help me to help you: a guide on parenting teenagers?"
"teenagers are difficult to understand," he forced out, pointedly ignoring dean's growing laughter, "i am merely doing research on how toโhow to better understand thโdean, this is not a laughing matter."
"you mean [name]," sam assumed, equally as amused but having the decency to mask it slightly better.
"did something happen with you and [name]?" dean turned back to the angel with a slight grin, "do they have daddy issues now?"
"they do noโi am not her daโ" he sighed.
he inhaled slowly.
"no," he said after a long pause.
both brothers stared directly at him.
"dude, cas, you're a shit liar," sighed dean, giving him a pointed look and leaning forward as sam sat next to him, "so? what teenage angst is going on with [name] this time? do they need our help? are they hurโ"
"they're not hurt," he interrupted, "theyโdamn it, dean, weโ" he groaned into his hands, "we had a disagreement."
"a disagreement," echoed dean, "you had a fight?"
"noโwellโ"
"so you did," dean confirmed.
"it wasn't a fight, we didn't argueโwe justโwe just had a disagreement," he corrected, "a disagreement is all it was."
"okay," sam said, clearly not believing him, "so you guys had a disagreement. what was it about?"
"god, you're so controlling, cas, you know that?"
"i am not controlling, [name], i am justโ"
"what, looking out for me? i'm not a baby, cas, i can take care of myself!"
"nothing important," he lied.
"you really gotta work on your poker face," dean muttered into his hands, "look, cas, we can help."
"they are in their room," he pointed out, "and they told me to go away. so i went away."
"so?"
"so," he forced out, "the bookโ"
"โis just a book," finished sam, taking the book from dean and thumbing through the pages before closing it and placing it on the table again, "it's just there for advice. it's not going to apply to every single kid or teenager out there. and not everything in here's gonna be... well, good advice."
"can you at least try, cas?"
"i am trying, [name], do you understand how hard it is whenโ"
"what, so it's all about how hard it is for you? my apologies, angel of the lord, i never meant to demean you. do you want me to get down and pray to you? to your dad who ran off to get the milk?"
"he did noโ"
"god, cas, it's a saying."
"cas?"
"i think you broke him, sammy," muttered dean.
"what? no, iโcas, you good?"
"they said god went out to get the milk," he said slowly,
"what exactly does that mean?"
"they're not wrong," dean barked out a laugh as sam shot him a pointed look, "what?"
"they said that?" sam asked instead, "itโum, it just meansโit just means he left and didn't come back, itโi mean yeah, they weren't wrong, butโum, look, cas, just tell us what they said. please?"
there was a long pause.
"they said i'm too overbearingโ"
"you keep treating me like a child, cas."
"because you are a child, [name]."
"that doesn't mean you have to treat me like one!"
"โand that i should see things from their point of viewโ"
"aren't you angels supposed to be, i don't know, good guys? you're supposed to help humans, right?"
"that'sโ"
"โand that angels suck."
"huh," dean mused, "never knew [name] had it in them."
"dean."
"she could be scared," sam suggested suddenly.
"of what? me getting angry?"
"no, that's not what iโ" he sighed, "look, i'm just playing the guessing game here. i don't know what's going on in [name]'s head, none of us are mind readers. but they might be scared of something."
"i still think you should talk to them," sam added,
"maybe figure it out. maybe get them to tell you. but guessing is only gonna get you so far, cas."
"they won't want to talk to me," he frowned, "i don't want to... make them uncomfortable."
"you won't," dean said so confidently it almost surprised castiel, "[name] has never been uncomfortable around you, you know that, cas."
god (pun unintended), he knew.
he knew you looked for him in a crowded room first, always made a beeline to him if you were uncomfortable, clinging to his sleeve like a little kid and timidly hiding behind him. he knew you always asked sam and dean about him (because they told him, sure, but that was besides the point). he knew you had a polaroid of the two of you in your phone case, and another framed photo in your desk drawer that you always liked looking at before you slept, putting it on your bedside table because 'that way, cas is always watching over me, even when i sleep: (if only you knew he'd watch over you if you asked, sit by your bed and watch you sleep, rid your sleep of any nightmares. he'd be there in the mornings, too, when you woke up, but only if you asked.)
"talk to her," sam advised gently, "it's probably not going to solve anything but it'll... give you some clarity. on... on what's happening."
"there's no guarantee she'll open up," cas lifted his gaze.
"yeah," he shrugged, "but you're looking out for her."
"what if i'm overstepping?"
"take things slowly," dean crossed his arms, leaning back and crossing his arms, "listen to what they gotta say. stay patient, stay calm, but listen to them, cas."
"come on, cas," sam nodded solemnly, standing up and clapping the angel on his shoulder, "let's go."
"go?"
"talk to [name]," he said, like it was the simplest answer ever, "well, we're not coming with you. but we'll accompany you there!"
castiel barely managed to get a word in before dean skidded his chair back and nudged him up, not-so-subtly nudging him towards your room, before shooting him two thumbs up and mouthing 'you got this' before hurriedly shooing sam away to the kitchen.
he most certainly did not 'got this.
"[name]," he said awkwardly.
"you're still here?" came your voice.
"yes."
"i told you to go away."
"listen to what they gotta say. stay patient, stay calm, but listen to them, cas."
"if you're going to be like that," he began, watching you curse as he flew into your room, standing over you, "then we'll be doing things my way."
"we always do things your way!" you protested.
"you said you're not a child, so do not act like one," he said firmly.
"i'm not acting like a chiโ"
"yes, you are."
"casโ"
"don't 'cas' me. we need to talk about this."
"about what?" you frowned.
"the arโthe disagreement."
"do we?" you crossed your arms.
"... yes."
"did sam and dean have anything to do with this?"
there was a pause.
"yes," he didn't see the point of lying to you.
"so you're doing this because they said so," you implied.
"no, i'm doing this becauseโthat's not important, the point is, we need to talk about what was said."
you grumbled quietly but didn't argue further.
okay. okay. he was getting somewhere.
"can i..." he motioned awkwardly to the bed.
"yeah," you said, not looking at him. he sat next to you.
"why did we argue?" no response. "[name], if you want me to help you, you need to talk to me."
"if i want you to help me, or if you want me to talk to you so you don't have to be so awkward around me?"
well.
okay.
"that is notโ" his feathers ruffled slightly. he exhaled slowly.
patience.
"sam told me," he said carefully, "that you might be scared."
"of what?" you frowned, immediately defensive.
"that's just what he told me," he said calmly, "so i came here to ask you what it was."
"that's it?" you frowned at him, "seriously? that's all you came in here to ask?"
"yes," he uttered, glancing down at you, "i am not good at thisโ" he fumbled over his words, frowning slightly, "โthisโtaking care of childrenโdo not give me that lookโi am notโi do not have experience in this. i mess up. i've messed up. but we need to talk about this."
you remained silent, but you let him continue.
progress.
"i don't do well with this. i canโ" he inhaled, "i know you know this. i'm new at this. you are a child," he ignored your groan, "you are young, you are inexperienced, and you are reckless. i am 'overprotective' over you becauseโ"
โbecause i do not want to see you get hurt, or worseโ
"โbecause i worry that you will follow in sam and dean's footsteps," he said instead, forcing their names out, "and you know all the kinds of shit they have been through. i simply do not want you to go through the same things, i do not want you to die."
"is that so hard to understand, [name]?" your lips pressed into a thin line.
"cas," you said finally.
"why are you so scared of making this work?" he watched you carefully.
"i don'tโi don't want to fuck this up," you said quietly,
"you'reโ" you motioned vaguely to him, "โyouโnotโnot that it's... y'know, a bad thing, or anything, butโbut itโyou haveโyou have angel... heaven... stuff... more important stuff thโ"
"no," he interrupted, "you come first."
"but your dutyโ"
"โis not as important as you," he finished firmly.
he watched you fidget with your hoodie strings.
"you leave me," you said quietly.
"i don't leave forever," came his response.
"you can't promise that," you said quietly, staring down at your lap.
"no, i can't," he agreed, "but i always come when you call, don't i?"
it hurt. fuck, it hurt so bad. you didn't know what was happening, didn't know where you were, didn't knowโfuck. fuck. fuck. you tried to remember sam and dean telling you what to do when you were going through this, but fuck fuck you couldn't remember what they said, fuck this was so stupid, fuck, fuckโ
"cas," you managed quietlyโor thought you said, anyway, you couldn't hear your own voice, "i don'tโi don't know if this is going to work, butโcas, if you can hear meโ"
not even a moment later, you heard the flapping of wings behind you. you kept your head between your knees and tried to steady your breathing.
"you called," he gazed down at you, his brows furrowed as his arms hang at his sides like he didn't know what to do with them. his face fell as he registered what was happening, "[name]." you didn't seem to hear him. "[name]. hey."
he crouched in front of you, his hand hovering hesitantly in front of you before he slowly brushed your hair back, trying to meet your gaze.
"[name]," he said again, noting your breathing as it quickened slightly, "can you hear me?"
"hey. hey. listen to my voice, okay?" he said lowly, his eyes so full of patience, "listen to my voice, [name]. i'm right here. you called for me, and i'm right here, in front of you. what do you need?"
(you needed to breathe, to get your breathing under control, to slow your heart-rate, he knew that, he knew that, but what did you want him to do?)
"stay," you rasped, hand shooting out to cling to his trenchcoat, "justโ" you swallowed, "โjustโjust stay, cas, please, i can'tโi don'tโ"
"okay," he said simply, because it really was that simple. you wanted him to stay? he'd stay.
"yeah," you muttered.
"so what are you scared of?" he asked again, tilting his head.
"itโi want it to work," you wouldn't meet his gaze.
"it will work," he said firmlyโso confidently, staring directly at you like he didn't understand why, "we will make it work."
a pause.
"families fight all the time," he stared at you, "look at sam and dean. they have some of the worst arguments i've ever seen and heard, but they always manage to figure it out."
"we'll work this out," he said quietly, placing his hand over yours, "together. okay?"
"okay, you echoed, voice small.
he nodded once, folding his hands on his lap and staring at the wall.
"sam said he found a book you might like." he glanced over at you, the corners of his mouth twitching up slightly in a knowing smile as you perked up slightly.
"he said he would only give it to you if you come out of your room."
Imagine Jaskier fuming at the way Valdo Marx flirts with youโฆ
โThe fates have singled me out and are likely laughing.โ Jaskier groaned, his eyes watching the velvet-wearing musician across the deck.
โI do not believe the fates to be that cruel.โ You said as you handed the bard an apple.
Jaskierโs eyes snapped to you. โNo? Of all the ways to get to his destination, he chooses this very passage on this very boat on this very day?โ
Even you couldnโt argue with his reasoning. Perhaps the fates were in need of a lighthearted jest today. Clearing your throat, you attempted to keep Jaskier in brighter spirits. โWell, this journey will not be long. You need only endure it for a few hours.โ
You watched Jaskier let out an exasperated groan before black and gold blocked your senses. A strong aroma of tulips and fresh grass filled your nose as you breathed in the interruption.
โAnd who is this vision?โ The new guest questioned Jaskier, his eyes fixed on you. His arm was leaning again the ship to add a flair to his stance.
Jaskier frowned over his shoulder. You caught his frustration and quickly introduced yourself. The new bard repeated your name and hummed. โHow fitting for an exquisite character. I am Valdo Marx.โ He announced, holding out his hand.
Jaskier rolled his eyes. โThey know who you are. We all heard you announce yourself.โ
As expected, he was ignored.
You took his hand with polite etiquette and Valdo pressed a kiss on the back of it. You would wash it off soon enough. โPleasure to meet you.โ You smiled.
The bard sent you a wink. โThe pleasure is all mine, I assure you.โ
Jaskier scoffed behind him. โI am literally standing right here.โ
Valdo took a step forward. He was not an unattractive man by any means but you could feel his arrogance and pride like a thick smoke.
โDo you play?โ He inquired.
โI have been learning the lute. Though I am a difficult student and can only hold a small tune.โ
Jaskier caught your eyes over the gold-embellished shoulder and sent you an encouraging smile. โAnd it is a most beautiful sound.โ
Valdo dismissed his rival and lowered his voice for you, โI would happily let you play my lute should you wish.โ
That was it. Jaskier had had enough. He skirted around his nemesis and set himself firmly between you both.
โAbsolutely not! One lute is quite enough. They are spoken for, thank you very much.โ He said, trying his best to be gracious and not break his rivals nose.
Valdo acknowledged him for a grand total of half a second before his eyes found you again. โSongs are often sung with many voices.โ He replied rather suggestively and copied Jaskierโs earlier move to manoeuvre closer to you. You took a step back, keeping him at a distance. โPerhaps, youโd like to swap from an untuned fork to an actual melody.โ
Valdoโs words did not sit right with you. So, this time, you walked around the velvet-clad flirt and curled against Jaskier - like a perfectly slot puzzle piece. โI think not, bard.โ You said and felt Jaskier welcome you with a gentle squeeze.
โI have chosen my melody and his voice is...โ you looked at Jaskier, studying his beautiful face and blue eyes. โHis voice is a soothing honey.โ
Valdo chuckled under his breath. โThick and medicinal?โ
You heard the jab and so did Jaskier. But neither of you seemed to care. You placed a hand on his cheek and let your thumb stroke his bottom lip.
โSweet and luxurious.โ You listed softly. โGolden and pure.โ
โBy the Gods, do I love you.โ Jaskier whispered and immediately claimed your mouth with his. The rest of the ship guests were forgotten and neither of you had noticed Valdo Marx tuck his tail between his legs and scurry off to his troupe.
~ ~ ~
Ciri had been watching quietly from the sidelines. โI wonder what itโs like to have two people fighting for your affection.โ She pondered aloud.
Geralt grumbled and slowly turned to spare a glance. He noticed the way your hands were placed firmly on Jaskier - a silent claim.
โOh my- is that a smile?โ Ciri gasped.
It was but Geralt quickly returned to a neutral expression. He turned back to the seas and let the sea drown out the sound of his Child of Surprise chirping about love and the softs murmurs of his two friends who disappeared behind large wooden boxes.

summary : you get a little banged up, so duty calls for our favourite trickster!!
That was the first coherent thought that managed to claw its way through the crimson haze of agony that had descended upon you.ย
Youโd taken a hit. A bad one. The vampire, a hulking brute of a creature, had been faster than youโd anticipated. It had swiped at you with a clawed hand, and for a terrible, suspended second, you felt the searing, white-hot pain of its talons tearing through your side. The impact had sent you flying, your body slamming into a stack of rotting wooden pallets. Now, you were slumped against the wall, one hand clamped uselessly over the wound, watching the crimson liquid ooze between your fingers with a detached sense of horror.
The pain was a living thing, a monstrous, hungry beast gnawing at your insides. It was getting harder to breathe. The frantic shouts of your brothers were becoming more muffled, the edges of your vision blurring, the world tilting on a precarious axis. You tried to focus on the hunt, on the fight, on making sure Dean and Sam were okay, but it was like trying to hold onto smoke. The darkness was creeping in at the corners of your vision, promising a peaceful, silent oblivion.
And then, the air itself seemed to shatter.
Gabriel.
"I've got her. Focus on the bloodsucker."
He was by your side before you could even register the full shift of light. One moment he was standing, the next he was crouched beside you, his hand, gentle and impossibly warm, replacing your own over your wound. His presence was an immediate, palpable shield, pushing back the encroaching darkness and settling the frantic rhythm of your heart.
"Hey, hey, hey," he murmured, his voice a low, honeyed timbre that seemed to cut through the chaos like a knife. "Look at me. Yeah, there you are. There's my girl. Don't you dare go to sleep on me, you hear? I didn't materialize in the middle of this dump just to watch you take a nap. My timing isย impeccable, I'll have you know. I was in the middle of a very important conniption fit about the lack of decent candy corn in this century, and then I felt you hurt and I said to myself, 'Gabriel, old boy, your favorite Winchester is in trouble.' and here I am."
He didn't look at Dean or Sam. He didn't seem to register their presence at all. His focus was laser-sharp, an unbreakable tether that was locked entirely on you. And strangely, your brothers didn't question it. They spared a single glance, a shared look of profound relief that bordered on the reverent, and then redoubled their attack on the vampire. They knew. They might not understand the full extent of what you and Gabriel had, but they knew, with an instinct forged in a lifetime of fighting monsters, that their little sister was safe now.
You blinked, trying to process the torrent of words. It was like trying to catch butterflies in a hurricane. But the sound of his voice was good, it wasย anchoring, and you found yourself focusing on the way his lips quirked as he talked, the expressive dance of his eyebrows.
"m'your favorite..?" you managed to croak out, your voice sounding thin and reedy, even to your own ears. A faint smile tugged at the corner of your mouth, a pale imitation of your usual brightness, but it was there.
Gabriel's face split into a grin that was all mischief and warmth. "Course you are, cupcake. It's either you or one of those two, no offense."
A low, humming warmth started to emanate from Gabriel's hand, seeping into your side. It was a gentle, analgesic glow that began to dull the roaring, savage pain. You gasped, your eyes fluttering.
"I know, I know, it hurts." he said, his voice dropping to a coaxing whisper. "I'm just taking the edge off, honey. Your bodyโs got to do the heavy lifting. But you have to stay with me, okay? No napping. I told you, I'm your guardian angel. What kind of guy would I be if I let you drift off on my watch? A pretty crummy one, I'll tell you that."
He was babbling, you realized. The archangel Gabriel, the trickster, the pagan god who had walked through eons and had seen the rise and fall of empires, was babbling for your benefit. The realization made you smile, a weak, wobbly thing that still felt like a victory.
"You'reโฆ you're really here..." you breathed, your voice a cracked whisper.
"Why, of course I'm here," he said, faking ofense at the statement. "What, you think I was just gonna let that oversized mosquito have his way with you? No sire."
You tried to laugh, but it came out as a pained wheeze. "It's notโฆ my fault. He was rude."
"He was, wasn't he?" Gabriel agreed readily, his eyes twinkling for a second. "Tell you what, I'm gonna let your brothers deal with the manners lesson. Those two look like they're in the mood for a littleโฆ aggressive etiquette training. See, Dean just threw a chair at its head. That's a bit much, even for him, but it's the thought that counts. Hey, Sammy's got it in a headlock now. He's gonna give it a noogie from hell."
Listening to him narrate the battle was the most surreal and wonderful thing. You could hear the sounds of the fight: the wet thud of fists, the splintering of wood, Dean's furious curses, but Gabriel's play-by-play transformed it all into a ridiculous, almost slapstick comedy. He was deliberately making it sound silly, ridiculous, something straight out of Tom and Jerry, anything to keep your mind off the pain and the fear that laced your veins. He knew exactly what to say. He always did.
He kept his hand pressed to your side, the golden glow constant, and with his other hand, he gently smoothed a stray strand of hair from your forehead. "Your brothers are doing great," he continued, his tone that of a sports commentator. "They're taking out their frustrations on this guy. It's a little unhealthy, but I'm not one to judge a guy's therapy methods."
A giggle bubbled up in your chest, a fragile, breathless sound. It hurt, but it was also the most wonderful, cleansing feeling. You looked up at him, your vision still blurry, but you could see him so clearly. He was bathed in a soft, internal light, his face a mask of fierce concentration and gentle affection. He was the most beautiful thing you had ever seen.
"You're being silly." you mumbled, your hand reaching out to weakly touch his arm.
"I'm being strategic," he corrected, a soft smile gracing his lips. "It's a well-known fact that laughter is the best medicine. And you better laugh at all my jokes, or I'll be real offended.
Your eyes, half-lidded with exhaustion, still managed to sparkle with wonder. You weren't even hearing his words; you were just drinking in the sight of him, the sound of his voice, the feeling of his grace mending you from the inside out. He was a miracle, your miracle, and he was here.
"Gabriel.." you whispered, the name itself feeling like a prayer.
He leaned a little closer, his gaze searching yours. His thumb, impossibly soft, brushed against your cheek, wiping away a smear of grime and blood you hadn't even noticed. "Yeah, kiddo? What is it?"
"Keep talking," you whispered, reaching up with your good hand to clumsily grip the front of his hoodie. The fabric was soft under your fingers, grounding. "Tell me more. Tell me about... about the candy corn."
He beamed at you. "Oh, you have no idea the depths of my despair, kiddo. Once upon a time, candy corn wasย good. It was a delicacy. But now? They changed the recipe! It's all waxy and flavorless. A tragedy of epic proportions. I'm considering a plague of locusts. A very targeted plague that just affects candy corn manufacturers. I think it's reasonable, don't you?"
"Ridiculous," you breathed, but you were smiling, a real smile that lit up your entire face.
The sound of the fight had finally died down. The final, decisive thud of a body hitting the floor and a fading, pained growl signaled it was over. The vampire was gone.
Dean and Sam hurried over, their eyes wide with a mixture of relief and awe. They stopped a few feet away, looking at the scene: you, propped up against the wall, looking more peaceful than they'd ever seen anyone who'd just been eviscerated. And Gabriel, the rogue archangel, crouched on his heels beside yo with a reverence that was nothing short of sacred.
Dean opened his mouth, probably to ask a thousand questions, the first and loudest being about when and how and why this particular archangel had decided to become his little sister's personal guardian angel, but he was cut off.
"All good, boys!" Gabriel said, not even glancing at them. He held up a hand in a casual wave. "She's fine. A little banged up, a little low on blood, but she's gonna be just fine n'dandy. Aren't you, cupcake? Yes you are. You two can thank me later. Or, better yet, just continue being the terrifying, overprotective brothers you are. It's a good look on you."
You giggled at the rapid fire of words slipping past his lips, and at Dean's I-dont-know-if-i-should-be-offended expression, and Gabriel immediately met you with a bright smile of his own.
"And you," he said, his voice switching to a private, tender hum. "You need to rest. But firstโฆ"
He looked around, overexagerating theatrically looking for something, then snapped his fingers. Suddenly, a perfect, pristine miniature ice cream sundae appeared in his other hand. It was topped with a cherry and whipped cream, and it was the most ridiculous, wonderful thing you'd ever seen.
"It's for you," he said, holding it out with a smirk. "Told you, I'm full of surprises. Now, let's hear all about how your stupid, brave brothers put you in this situation. I'm thinking it's a story that deserves a few embellishments."
sorry im still stuck on that part in profiler profiled where hotch makes a beeline to the interrogation room and goes "carl buford" and morgan immediately going "what"

Summary: When Gabriel said, "What you call Armageddon, I call Sunday dinner," he meant it literally. That was exactly what those Sunday dinners were like back then, and he's not the only one hating it and hasn't entirely grown out of its shadow.
When Castiel, broken and child-like, runs away from conflicts that reminded him way too much of the childhood memory that he thought he'd buried deep down, he runs into the older brother he thought he'd lost, trapped by demons and under torture. He has to save him.
They don't realize how much they need each other to heal all those traumas and wounds until they start talking and bonding again.
Snippet:
"Believe it or not, all things considered, I think you're doing pretty good already," Gabriel speaks again after Castiel's breath evens out a little. He folds his wings back and starts trying to stand up. Castiel immediately follows him to rise up, reaching out his hands to help him and hold him steady, reversing their roles in a heartbeat.
"It doesn't feel like it," Castiel says, looking up in the direction of the sky, gesturing vaguely around them. The pile of demon ash is still on the ground in the same place where they left it.
"It never does, doesn't it?" Gabriel glances at him, testing to take a slow step forward and staggering. "But trust me on saying that, they're the dicks, not you. Michael, Lucifer, Raphael, and I guess that would include me, too, we all should have done so much better. And Dad, too, don't forget, Dad's probably the first and biggest --"
"-- dick," Castiel adds automatically.
Gabriel laughs. "Touchรฉ."
"I don't think you are, though. Not until..." Castiel hesitates.
"TV land? Or did you want to say when I killed Dean a hundred times to teach Sammy a lesson?" Gabriel nods knowingly with a tiny nostalgic smile. "Fair point, and sorry, I don't regret that one. I was just trying to teach them a lesson and it was so much fun! And you have no idea how creative I have to be to even throw them off, that's art!" Meeting Castiel's unhappy stares, Gabriel's lips twitch and the smile drops. "Sorry, off topic now. The point is, I should be there for you."
