I'm writing a prose piece about characters going into the Women's Timber Corps, commonly known as the Lumber Jill movement in the UK during WW2. There is so much information about what men were doing during the war, what they were wearing, eating etc. But it's so difficult finding information about the WTC or even a woman's life style during WW2. Can you recommend any sites or writing links? Many thanks :) X
I find that when researching, it's always best to keep a journal of your research. you can do this digitally, but i personally prefer to buy a scrapbook, print out my sources (or write the url if no printer) and then on the opposite page of the scrapbook write in your own words any useful information in the source. Highlighting helps! As for costumes, pictures are your best weapon. The wikipedia page for the WTC has a lovely image of a woman in a cap, a blouse with a knit sweater-looking thing over it, and some thick, sturdy pants. Find as many pictures as you can, write down what is a common variable and what changes in each outfit. A quick Google search will find you any other clothing or common clothing in the era. (Also the Wikipedia page lists the uniforms of both the WTC and the WLA, which managed the WTC)
If you want sources, always always always check the references section at the bottom of the wikipedia page of your subject. Every source used on the page is there and it can be a great start to finding more in-depth information on your subject.As for women and their lifestyle in WW2, i know that there was a sudden call for women to take up labour and other commonly 'manly' jobs because so many of the men were going off to war. Someone had to do the work, and the women were the only ones left around to do it, which is why the WTC was originally formed. So, if your characters are fictional, many of them would have husbands (or sweethearts, if they're young) who have gone off to war and they are probably only just now learning independence, or perhaps wanting careers instead of raising children at home. The social climate was changing as well, so obviously there's conflict of interest as some people didn't think women should work and others did.

Hi, I'm currently writing a story where the main main female protagonist very rarely speaks (due to a harsh, slightly abusive upbringing) and was wondering how to go about it?
That all really depends on your writing style. If it's first person, it would make it much easier for you because all her internal dialogue can speak for her.
If it's from someone else's perspective, then actions speak louder than words. Convey her personality by how she reacts to things, what she does, etc.
Look up body language, as you can use a lot of that to you advantage, be it in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person.
Also, make sure her lack of speech doesn't become detrimental. The good thing is you can use the rare occasions where she does speak to let the reader know that whatever she's saying is important. The cons are that excessive miming becomes tedious. You could try simply having her avoid situations where she has to speak, instead of having her try to navigate her day as anyone else would, but not being able or willing to speak. Her condition sounds like a psychological thing or a phobia, so her behavior would have to support that story. Someone who's scared to speak wouldn't be a social butterfly!
And as a last note, try not to make the effects that an abusive ubringing have had on her seem glamorous or desirable. If she has a love interest, make sure their goal is to help her recover or assist her where her condition makes things difficult. Unless the point of the character is that they aren't there to help her, and are only interested in having a relationship, in which case make sure it's clear that them romanticising her illness isn't okay. This is an easy way to dodge offense, even if your character doesn't necessarily overcome the condition during the course of the story.However, you know your character best so you can adapt this information any way necessary to the details of the character which i do not know. How would one go about writing about merpeople (shark ones especially?)
You can start by doing some research about merpeople folklore and also look up modern stories centered around merpeople to see what the trends are. You can look up merpeople tropes and clichés as well. Then, just develop your characters and their world the way you would any other characters, and start writing!
I would also suggest, if i may, looking up the species the merperson is based off of. Sharks regularly shed teeth, live in shallow waters, and don't have smooth skin like you'd think, but rather very very fine scales. Researching the habits of the creature in question can lead to some easy and appropriate personality traits and makes you look more credible than all the other people out there, writing deep-sea tropical mermaids with sideways tails.

I have a cool character who is desperately lacking some personality due to my own lack of subtlety. I wish I could draw it out in a way that lets readers bond with the man without typing "ARROGANT BUT OVER-PROTECTIVE" in the center of the paper. Any tips? And yes, I am a bit of an amateur. Character Development: Choosing a Personality
When showing personality, there’s several things you can do:
Convey personality through action. Your character’s actions are going to tell us far more than actually listing his personality. What does he do that’s arrogant? How does he show that he’s overprotective? Those actions are super important.
Convey personality through dialogue. Personality comes out in how people talk, what they say and how they say it - and also what they don’t say. An overprotective person might not want to say why they’re so protective - especially if they’re arrogant. Tap into your character through dialogue!
Convey personality through how others view them. An arrogant person may not believe they are arrogant, but others are going to disagree. How others view your character is important and will tell us a lot about your character.
Convey personality through fashion/possessions. How a person dresses and what they have also act as guides to their personality. An person may dress well because they view themselves as better than others - or they may dress poorly, because they don’t care about what others think. They may pride themselves on listening to bands no one else has heard of, or will defend their collection of Nickelback CDs until the day they die. What they have and what they like will tell us about their personality as well!
