When you’re writing a scene so emotional that you start to feel the characters emotions and start crying???

What do you mean I can't read every book that has ever been written? What do you mean my lifetime is not enough? Don't joke with me like that, man. Not nice. Not cool.

Honestly? My main piece of advice for writing well-rounded characters is to make them a little bit lame. No real living person is 100% cool and suave 100% of the time. Everyone's a little awkward sometimes, or gets too excited about something goofy, or has a silly fear, or laughs about stupid things. Being a bit of a loser is an incurable part of the human condition. Utilize that in your writing.

“What if I hate everything I write?”

Then you keep writing anyway.

Because what if the point isn’t to love it? What if the point is to just keep writing?

You have to honor your writing, even if it sucks, even if it’s lazy, even if you read it and physically cringe. Not every piece of writing is meant to be “good”, but every piece of writing is meant to exist.

You can hate the words and still bow to the ritual.

It’s not the final product that’s important. It’s the fact that you wrote it, and it exists, and it’s real now. You need to learn to value your work as an action, not the work. (Of course, you should definitely love your final product too, but it’s more important to be happy with yourself for what you can truly control: that you did it in the first place.)

So here’s my advice: don’t delete it. Don’t tear it into pieces, don’t throw it away, don’t abandon it forever and let the “Untitled document” rot in your files.

Let the ugly writing live.

Put it in the drawer, feed it to your future self, let it metamorphose into a beautiful butterfly. Edit it if you wish, or let yourself rewrite it into something you do like.

Just don’t let it die.

A says they're fine. B nods. Neither of them believes it.

B keeps saying "Don't fall in love with me." A already has.

A would die for B. B would never.

A lights candles for B's birthday long after they're gone.

B asks A if they still care. A lies.

B loves the idea of A. A loves all of B.

A cries at B's wedding, but not for the reason anyone thinks.

B leaves a voicemail they regret. A listens to it every day.

A hugs B like it's the last time. It is.

The god stitched a new eye for itself into your navel. It is always watching your hands.

You ascended. Your body did not survive it.

Your heartbeat controls your magic. Every time your heartbeat changes dramatically in pace, it surges uncontrollably. You have arrythmia.

You begged to be normal. Now, you don't recognize the person in the mirror.

You shed skin every week. A new being is under your skin.

They both reach for the same book at the library. Their hands touch.

"Do you believe in soulmates?"

Breakfast in bed.

They adopt a plant together like it's a child.

They develop an absurd number of inside jokes. It eventually turns into a secret language.

They invent a made-up holiday just to spend the day together.

They argue over who gets the last cookie. The winner then just proceeds to break it and share it with the other.

"I'm cold." "Take my jacket. And my scarf. And my gloves. And my soul."

They confess something dark. The other doesn't flinch.

They build a blanket fort together. It slowly creeps into the rest of their home.
