the first secret : there's no secret that people end up in portum when they have nowhere left to go. how did the conversation go when your muse opened up for the first time ?
wandering takes its toll. moving from place to place whenever a clumsy accident causes a rebirth grows tiring. the lack of long-term connections, the wariness with which one must treat all potential acquaintances lest they turn jealous and try to kill you. aravis doesn't tell people about these feelings, though, just answers with a wry shrug, “ i wanted a change of scene, somewhere to relax. i guess portum knew it was the best place for me to get that. ”
until their partner. their wonderful, perfect partner, their best friend and closest confidante. the one who took one look at ravi post-excuse and knew they were full of shit. the one who called them on it.

ravi sighs, knowing nothing gets past their dear friend's intuition. why they have a mountain-sized crush on this person, they'll never know. “ nearly seven hundred years is a long time, ” they say, “ and a phoenix doesn't fit in that well in immortal circles. ” aging and dying and being reborn, always too young or too old to mesh with the rest of the eternal beings. never at the right stage of life at the right time, never able to move on as easily as others. “ i got tired of having to move every time i was reborn, and of losing friends each time i did that. it's exhausting always having to look over your shoulder, wonder if you're going to get accused of being a witch for suddenly looking ten years younger and have them try to burn you at the stake. which always increased suspicion when i then didn't burn, and i got chased out with silver implements and pitchforks. ” it wasn't the weapons that stung, so much as the rejection from communities they grew to care for. “ here i can relax a bit. actually make friends that will last, not just for a couple of decades. ”
the one regret : what is the one thing that your muse regrets ? it could be inside or outside of portum's walls. there has to be something they wish they could've done differently. what is that one thing ?
cristian liloan has a great many regrets. xe carries them like a shroud across his shoulders—a cross to bear, if he bought into that christian bullshit. collected over centuries, bad memories like droplets filling a pool, they weigh on xem in quiet moments and whenever he is alone. most trivial or immutable, spur-of-the-moment decisions or choices-that-weren't. some, even cris is still not sure if he truly regrets, or if xe simply wonders what could have been. like putting himself in a position to be captured by pirates ... he lost family, but gained many things — friends, adventure, an eternal life, a chance to change the world for the better that xe never would have had as an ordinary mortal.
xyr greatest regret, however, is simple. it is that he allowed fear to control him, to keep xem from reconnecting with xyr family before it was too late. he did not want them to see what he had become, a monster preying upon humans, and thus missed the chance to ever see xyr parents or cousins again. he does not begrudge their descendants, appreciates the familial spirit they extend, but he misses his first family. wishes he could have told them about his grand adventures on the high seas, of thwarting the spanish navy time and time again. he knows his cousins would have appreciated the story, and xyr mother would have plied xem with pandesal while trying not to fret.
the first step : describe your muse(s) arrival to portum. what was their first impression ? how did they stumble upon the town taking in supernatural runaways ? maybe you want to expand on the reason your muse had for needing portum in the first place.
a baby, small and wrinkled and red from crying, swaddled in white cotton, clutches at the feathers that brush past his face. the angel does not look down, continuing their steady walk towards the distant lights of a town. they skirt the edges of moonlight-dappled clearings, careful to avoid notice. wings shield the baby from view of the sky, fearful of who could be watching.
the forbidden child is laid upon the stone steps of the town's medical centre, left with only a blessing to ward against the chill of the night. he is found shortly afterwards by a shift worker on their way in, brought inside quickly to be cared for.
an agathion, the product of an angel and a demon, brought immediately to the one place free of outside influences and expectations where he can be normal. he will grow up as an ordinary child, never knowing hardship or pain, surrounded by love and community.

“are you in ? come on, it's genius ! ” mason gestured towards the raffle table. he wasn't one for gambling, but buying a few tickets — or a hundred of them — was a win win situation. he was giving money to the rebuilding efforts and might grab him his own sweet deal. “we pool our money and buy as many tickets as we can. if one of us wins, we can split the winnings. if we get the cinema tickets, you take me and i take you. if we get the spa day then, hell, we can get pedicures together. as for the tattoos ... ” he thought for a moment, “well, we'll have to become beset friends pretty quickly because we're getting marked together ! ”
ravi is enjoying the cheerful atmosphere, taking the time to relax after a long week of moving bookshelves back into place at the shop. they listen to mason's enthusiastic pitch with a smile, tapping their chin in mock thoughtfulness. “ mm, i can see how that could be a good idea, ” they say, eyes bright with laughter, “ though what if i don't want to share my prize ? ” it's good-natured teasing, they're just looking for a bit of fun, but nonetheless hoping he takes the bait.

celebrations are never really cristian's thing, but xe can understand people's desire for some sort of joyful thing after everything that has occurred. now that things have calmed down and the worst of the damage has been patched up, people are willing to go out and have fun again. cris, on the other hand, sticks to the edges of the crowd, a barbecued skewer of some kind clasped in one hand from a previous foray into the throng.
“ enjoying yourself ? ” cris asks, turning at the movement in xyr peripheral vision.

it was moments like these that made isander feel truly lucky. he'd met up with bas after taking a cautionary scan through the forest , walking along the food trucks and vendor stands , picking up a few trinkets as they went. it felt almost like a normal day , a normal celebration. isander's limp was nearly completely healed and he'd decided to spend as much time as possible with his kids. sebastian most of all. his son had gotten injured in the attack and that had made isander realise just how much he missed out on. what if sebastian had been seriously hurt and isander hadn't heard of it beacuse he'd been too busy roaming the forest ? he'd vowed then and there to be more present. to try harder. "how are those tacos treating you ?" isander asked after they sat down , nudging bas gently. "hopefully they don't beat our barbecues we used to have."
the celebratory atmosphere is refreshing after the decidedly somber past two months. sebastian is particularly enjoying the various foods available, sampling a bit of everything as he wanders through the market area with his dad. it's nice to spend time together, especially now things are getting back to normal. bas slides onto a picnic seat, cardboard tray of tacos held in one hand while his other holds a can of soft drink. “ nothing beats a barbecue in the backyard, ” he says in response to his dad's question, tone suggesting there is absolutely nothing that could ... which given so many of his formative memories include things like that, yeah. probably true. “ but they're pretty good. ” they're very good, but they don't have the emotional connection a family barbecue does. “ what about your food ? it looks good, what is it ? ”
When weren’t newspapers light on details when it was convenient to them? More often than not, Aurora would see that happening and refuse to remain quiet about the atrocities of men, but this time, she didn’t have enough energy in herself to complain about it. Maybe they were keeping things light for a reason. “ I think we all know what happened here wasn’t light. ” The gorgon shook her head. “ And not to take it lightly, but maybe it’s too soon to dive into the gory details. Maybe people aren’t ready to read about it. ” Aurora did enjoy reading the papers when articles were written by this young journalist, but other than that? Not really. “ Bourbon is… well, it’s still up. ” Truth was, the gorgon hadn’t been there since that morning and it would probably take her a few days to step there without hearing her sisters’ screams, the bombs going off and being reminded of her own failure. “ They’re okay, all things considered. Juni had the worst of us, so she’s still in here, but Perri and I are… well… mostly worried about her, but recovering. ” Rory bit gently on her bottom lip, almost as if the slight hint of pain would help tethering her to the present, before she looked at the phonix. “ Do you and your partner need anything? You know you're always welcome to stay at Sunni and my place, right?" She reached over and placed her hand over Aravis, then gave it a light squeeze. " You're family too, Ravi. ”
“ far point, ” ravi says with a sigh. “ it's just frustrating to not know how badly damaged things are. ” they know everyone copes differently, but for them, the more information the better. not necessarily details of the events, but the aftermath, what buildings were damaged and which ones were unharmed. “ i'm glad you're all in one piece, ” they say, and mean it. the otero sisters are pillars of the community, both individually and as a group, and they are also some of ravi's closest friends — especially rory. “ we're both fine, ” they say, “ but i'll keep that in mind. though, i should be the one offering that to you. you know you're always welcome at our place, for any reason. ”
( ↻ ) “ i agree with you there . ” she doesn’t let her gaze linger on his scars for she knows better than anyone that sometimes it’s best to treat things as normal . since the attack , elodie can’t help but wonder if there was more she could’ve done for this town . should she have been more of a constant instead of bouncing in and out whenever she pleases ? would it have made things any different ? “ but yeah , we’ll never truly know . unfortunate but i suppose that this is a good opportunity to reinvent this town so that something like that doesn’t happen again . ” and hopefully have new leadership that’s willing to get their hands dirty for the town . “ well i was hoping it could be blind taste test but i’m feelin’ generous so i’ll give you a description , ” she replies in jest . “ that first glass is a mix of absinthe , dry vermouth and benedictine . give it a try , let me know what you think . ”
“ that sounds very herbal, ” cris notes upon hearing the cocktail's composition. not a bad thing, he personally is quite fond of very herbal drinks, and the stronger end of things as well. but most people prefer a more ... boring balanced flavour, he would suppose. “ it will be interesting to see what comes of it. i doubt people will allow such a lackadaisical council to come to power again. ” everyone was suitably enraged by the council's inaction, xe thinks if any future council attempts such laziness they will be thrown out on their ears. cris takes a sip of the first drink, cautious in case it somehow tastes different than expected. then a second, larger sip, taking time to savour the herbal and floral notes within. “ it is very nice, ” xe says, “ strong, but not too sweet. suitable for a solemn event, but not too harsh. ”
cosima was thrilled that sebastian was up for sampling the drink she'd made. although she wouldn't have been mad had it been a no, just disappointed. at the taste profile, she moves her little notebook over to scribble down what she thought might need a change or needed added. "thank you." it's spoken warmly, as she moves her attention back to the other. "i just need to tone down the floral element a bit. maybe the sweetness a bit too." the pen is tapped gently against the counter, in what is definitely thought. "nah. just experimenting, this time. i had an idea. thought it could be a hit."
“ yeah, a dash of something acidic would do this wonders, ” bas says. he's by no means an expert on alcoholic drinks — knows what he likes and not much else — but you pick things up eventually, whether you like it or not. and a bit of lemon or lime, he's learned, can really help a sweet thing. “ or maybe a dash of salt ? hm, not sure. damn, now you've got me wanting to experiment, ” he says with a laugh. “ well, i'm happy to be a taste-tester for any more experiments you might have up your sleeve. now or later. ”
open starter: to everyone! location: at a tennis court. weeks after the attack.
the sharp crack of racket against ball echoed through the courts, followed by a trajectory that was much too high, much too wild. she cursed under her breath, lowering her racket as the yellow blur sailed clean over the fence, past the neat white lines, out of bounds in the most literal sense. a heartbeat later, there came a dull, alarming thud.
“oh my god--” her voice cut quick, strained, feet already moving as she slipped through the open gate of the court, crossing the square to where the poor soul had been struck. she barely registered curious eyes or the faint laughter of passersby; her focus was singular.
the victim was there, stunned, hand to their head. “fuck--are you alright?” she asked, kneeling beside them without hesitation, her tone stripped of its usual slyness. there was no mistaking the impact, she had not held back on that serve. her blood went cold at the thought: if they weren’t of the sturdier sort, the strength behind her swing could have done more than bruise.
her hand hovered, careful, almost trembling, before she dared to touch their shoulder. “look at me. follow my voice. are you dizzy? nauseous? gods, i could have--” she cut herself off, jaw tightening. the worry in her eyes was raw, unpolished. “stay still, love. don’t move too fast. i’ll make it right.”
he's minding his own business, going for a walk through town and enjoying the fresh air, when a tennis ball comes out of nowhere and clobbers him on the temple. sebastian drops the the ground, pressing a hand to his forehead and wincing at the feeling. well, that's going to bruise quite badly. ah well, he's injured himself worse before, and it doesn't seem like he has a concussion.
it seems like mere moments later that someone's hovering over him, asking worried questions. bas looks up to find a woman with a tennis racket in hand — presumably the accidental culprit — looking extremely anxious. “ m'fine, ” he says. “ nothing i haven't had a million times before. ” he's not going to tell some random townsperson about his habit of falling out of trees on their first meeting, it's nice not being looked at like a weirdo. “ no need to do anything, it'll heal up just fine on its own. ” if his worrywart family don't do something about it first.
the mischief in kaia's grin only deepens when xe concedes that he would at the very least, help her should she need cpr. "i love attention, but i'm not that desperate for it, handsome," she said, with an air of bravado. "these nervous guppies would have me on a cot before i even hit the sand." her gaze flicked to the shore and watched as a few other continued to work. "you're right though, i don't have to do it all. it just...feels better than doing nothing."
“ well, i am glad of that, at least, ” cris replies, keeping xyr tone as flat as possible to hide any amusement or relief at her response. she seems the sort to tease over any perceived weakness, and he does not fancy giving her ammunition. “ that they would. i am sure they are already watching us ... they seem to have it out for me for daring to check myself out of the clinic. ” xe has seen more than a few stink eyes from medical personnel around town since then. xe lapses into silence, returning to removing debris from the shore.
( ↻ ) it’s been quite the day for everyone . and valeria doubts that aravis needs another person fussing over their rebirth . they’re a phoenix , rebirths happen ! it’s unfortunate that it resulted to that but at the end of the day , they’re just like anyone else in this town doing what they need to do to protect it . “ that’s good , ” they chuckle and move to take a seat next to them . “ mind if i take look ? ” they’ll ask and gesture towards the paper . “ and honestly , it truly could be case of both . upon first impressions , deaths aren’t taken too kindly in this town . ” and it’s not so much met with hostility but valeria has noticed that the town fears it more than they hate it . odd considering ghosts exists but who are they to argue ? “ when did they say you can get out of here ? ”
“ go ahead, ” ravi says, passing the newspaper to them. “ i get that, but it would be nice if they could just take my word for it, y'know ? ” they've done this enough times by now that it's practically routine, making the fussing all the more irritating — they know, unequivocally, that everything is fine. “ it's not like it's the first time it's happened, even here, ” they add with a pout. not that they enjoy recalling the kitchen incident from a decade ago, but. “ they didn't say. but it's quite busy, so i wouldn't be surprised if someone just forgot i'm here. ” aravis shrugs. “ i'm not actually that bothered, it's just kind of boring, and these seats aren't the most comfortable. ” and the staring. but staying here means they don't have to deal with any destruction in the bookshop or their home.
Iniko hadn't stopped moving in hours; traveling from place to place, from body to body, helping wherever and however they could. It was better that way, something frantic seeming to linger beneath the surface of her skin, evident in wild eyes and fingers that seemed to be unable to stop from busying themselves with something, anything. Unlike her, the clinic seemed to have quieted to some degree — though the entirety of the town was likely aware of the fact that their work was far from over, the slowing pace seemed to only make the nymph more anxious, feet moving with more speed than was likely necessary, seeming equally as started by the other body that's already inside the room when she enters. "Oh! Ravi...hello, sweets." Dark orbs flicker over their frame; the familiar features, the tear stained cheeks, the bowl that was no doubt just another way to help — most importantly, the seemingly unblemished skin. "You are fresh." A statement rather than a question, but concern is clear within Iniko's tone. "Are you alright?"
“ oh, hey iniko, ” ravi says, somewhat surprised to see the nymph at the clinic. they hadn't heard of the other being injured, so had assumed they would not see one another until the town recovers somewhat. still, they're not complaining. “ i'm as well as can be expected. aside from being stuck here til the doctors are satisfied nothing weird will happen. ” which is fair — it wouldn't be the first time a rebirth impeded ravi's control — but they're quite sick of the same four walls. “ what about you ? ” just because they can't see any visible injuries, doesn't mean iniko escaped unscathed, and they've got tears to spare if she needs them.

( ↻ ) “ if the founders could see this town now … ” elodie starts , busying herself by mixing together a test batch of cocktails . “ they’re probably rolling in their graves right now . ” she pauses for a moment . “ i don’t mean to be insensitive with all that’s happened . i think all of this could’ve been preventable . ” she places a tray consisting of three drinks on the bartop . “ can you give these a try and let me know what you think ? i’m workshopping something for the memorial reception . ”
cris enjoys the atmosphere of spell and bourbon, much less ... hectic than envy or the old haunt ( though both have their own merits at times ). the dim lighting is another bonus, at the moment, drawing less attention to the still-fading scars across his face. “ mm, if i were them i would certainly be most displeased with the actions of our former council, ” cris says. “ i would not be surprised if it could have been predicted, forewarned or prevented, though of course we will never truly know. ” part of xem is less sure — the hunters were terribly determined — but there is always a chance. “ care to tell me what they are ? or am i to go in totally blind ? ”
"Well, I'm probably a bit traumatised after reading this," said the warlock with a sarcastic bite, though the accompanying eye roll and relaxed posture suggested that he was feeling absolutely fine.
It was hard to come to a town like this when he did. When everyone around you is mourning people he'd never known, and grieving for a version of the town that never would've accepted him into its walls. For the warlock, it's been an abrupt change, something difficult to navigate, and so much easier to deal with by making sly comments and sharp jokes. Or scrutinising things, ever the keen-eyed writer.
"If you must know, they used the wrong 'there.' And forgot an Oxford comma, which changed the meaning of a sentence. Obviously I know the people living in this place are going through a lot right now, that's why I'm telling you and not the person who wrote it,"
A person who, as it so happens, Vincent is going to work with, which may have explained the annotating if he'd been bothered to explain such a detail. But as it happened, the warlock prefered to offer up as little of himself as possible, even if it made him seem like a total prick.
"Slow day at work, I take it?"
“ that's all ? i've seen english lit professors make more egregious grammatical and spelling errors, ” bas says in jest. he hasn't, of course — higher education is something he's never quite been brave enough to seek out — but it seems like it would be fun to tease the shop's current customer. and there's nobody around who'll get him in trouble for it, so.
he shrugs at the newspaper guy's comment, unbothered by the possible implication of him skiving off. his employer is not one of those insufferable people who expects employees to be one hundred percent on even when there's nothing to do, and as one of the longest-standing employees he's got a level of trust to manage himself. still, best to clear up any doubt. “ yeah, it's been quiet, but also i'm on my break. what about you ? working on your day off, or just not a fan of the office ? ” bas doesn't recall seeing any significant damage to the news' building, but there are many reasons someone might want to get out of the office.
❝ hm. ❞ her lips curl, appreciating the other's fervor, that obvious fire born in them; lived with them. those kind of people were needed at times like this. vitha was that for herself and bisma. ❝ glad i saved you from an awkward trip to the clinic, ❞ a breath leaves her in a short laugh; seemed like she was helping all around. she listens, always an interest in the unknown, in all the magic that tempts her. however, it doesn't sound that enjoyable — even when considering the immortality aspect. ❝ maybe there's someone can make up something for you. ❞ healing pain wasn't exactly her expertise, though, despite the day's turn out.
“ not as glad as me, ” ravi jokes. they were so relieved when they emerged from the fire. “ i'm not keen on being known as the person who walked into the clinic totally naked. ” and they don't have magic that can conjure clothes or anything so useful as that. “ i'll make sure to leave a glowing review, once i finally get home. ” at her suggestion to find someone to make pain medication, ravi shrugs. “ eh, maybe, ” they say. they're no stranger to pain, and honestly their joints aren't the best at any physical age. they're one of those people who can crack every joint in their limbs ten times a day. “ getting a doctor to check me out for early-onset arthritis has been on my to-do list for like ... fifty years, at this point. ” these sorts of facts are personal enough, but ultimately harmless — things they're willing to share with others.
