I can't overstate how pleased I am that our collective reading of Pluey (from his original very brief appearance, yet) as a cheerful delightful cinnamon roll who only wants to be cat turned out so accurate. Either Toby saw us and turned it up or that was always the intention, and either way it's perfect.

so obviously Battat represents the crazy theorists and analyzers in the fandom but what about the other two?

i think Jongler represents the casual fan. they dont really look too deep into things like Battat does and they seem to take things at face value (ex. Battat is green so he'd look good with a green drink)

and tbh Pluey kind of threw me through a loop since i think he could be a couple different things but i think hes meant to be like, a fandom lurker (judging by his silence and the fact that most of his interactions so far seem overly playful and not serious at all). one of those people in the fandom who doesnt really post or draw or write but theyre a loved member of the community anyway

but none of these three are looked down upon or treated as evil or malicious. and even though they might disagree at times its still clear that they like, support, and rely on each other. like how all types of different fans are necessary for the fandom to stay afloat. isnt that neat?

It would be so cool for a darkner to point out that if they exist to serve the lightners, they shouldn't be attacking them or doing anything against their will.

Or mention that the lightners never mistreat or abandon beings they know are alive, and it would be unfair to treat them as if they knew about the darkworld.

The whole dynamic is so interesting. A lot of Darkners seem to go kind of haywire in situations where Lightners are recognizing their personhood, or even thinking about them in personalizing ways. Lbr, who wouldn't?

Unfortunately, though... Lightners do sometimes mistreat and abandon things they know are alive. See: Susie's whole past, being feared, condemned, and excluded even when she didn't do anything wrong until she accepted the bad-girl mantle in self-defense. Many Lightners would absolutely change the way they treat Light World items if they knew they could have personhood, but it's not a given. Each Lightner and Darkner interaction will be different depending on who they both are as people, what they can convey about themselves to each other, and what they are each willing to learn and accept.

Kris. Kris likes him, or liked him once. For some people, one person's worth of approval is all they need.

When someone is like that, it can naturally weird out everyone else, because we all feel like our approval is important and everyone should care about having it. Someone who needs very few anchors for their selfhood can come off as condescending or indifferent and it can insulate them from all kinds of torment. But the flip side is that the fewer anchors there are, the more easily they can be lost.

Honestly the funniest thing Toby could do in Chapter 5 is have Ramb show up in Castle Town with no explanation, acting like he's always been there and he didn't go missing after dropping a bunch of secret boss hints in the previous chapter.
