Allinah stood on the sidewalk fiddling idly with her cell phone and kind of mashing her finger at her screen in feigned frustration. Then, as she was passed by she looked up and aside to the individual in question– “I seem to have lost my phone number. Can I have yours?”

The brunette looked around to see if the girl was talking to him or not. He was unsure. He couldn’t tell if she was looking at him or someone near, so he didn’t know if the question was aimed at him or not. “I’m sorry are you talking to me?” He asked.

“No, I didn’t see, Ryan. You know why? Because there were no looks he was giving me.” Emerie shook her head, trying to keep herself calm. She didn’t want to fight with him. Especially not where other people could hear. “No, you haven’t. That’s why I’m still here.” Letting out a deep breath, she ran her fingers through her hair. “We’re talking right now. Anyways if you wanna talk then how was your day?”

“I noticed. If you ain’t going to believe me though..fine.” Ryan ruffled his hair up a little to give himself a few seconds thinking time before he answered Emerie. “How was my day?” He repeated. “It’s been pretty good. I’ve just been studying a lot. How is your day?” He asked. “Probably been better than mine.”

“I already told you we were just talking about a project. He’s a friend.” Emerie sighed as she glanced up at him. There he was again with his jealousy streak even when there was no reason to be. “That’s debatable, but I won’t get into that now. That’s problem I don’t know how to talk to you because all you ever do is say something hurtful. Why would I want to carry on a conversation like that?”

"He was giving you looks though, didn’t you see that?” Ryan was watching from afar first. It seemed strange of him to do so; but he couldn’t help it. Emerie once meant something to him so of course he cared what was going on. “Have I said anything hurtful now?” He asked. “That’s what I’m saying. I can’t even start a general conversation without you saying I’m doing something bad.”

“Okay, if that’s what it looked like to you. It definitely wasn’t that.” Emerie shook her head and crossed her arms over her chest. It was clear she was already annoyed with him interfering in her life. He had no right to. “Talk? You wanna talk. What could we possibly talk about?” All he ever did was insult her anyways. She didn’t know why he even bothered trying to have a conversation.

“Then what was it?” He asked, generally curious. “I think what you told me was a lie, but alright.” He cleared. “We can’t even talk like friends?” He asked. Ryan felt a little hurt that she didn’t even want to give him the time of day because the two used to have something going on. “I ain’t a bad person Emerie.”

“It is great how music is linked with memories. For instance, one song can come on shuffle, one that’s been lost in your library for months and it takes you back to a certain time, a certain place. Cœur de pirate came on earlier and I remember how my foster sisters and I would get drunk on wine and sing her songs through the streets of La Ville Rose. I really miss home, but you guys are cool too. Enough about myself, how is everyone?”

“It is nice when a song carries memories with it.  I have a few myself, but not all of them are good. I’m alright though. Managing is probably the correct word to use. How about yourself?”

Ryan could hear the sarcasm that was in Emeries voice. He wasn’t going to say anything about it though. It would only make things worse. “Looked like flirting to me.” He muttered. Nonchalantly.  “What did I want? Nothing from you.” He stated bluntly. “Just to talk.”
