obviously this is a matter of taste and people who like going full whump more power to you but i often find myself reading things that are meant to be tragic and thinking it loses impact from not having the tiny bit of good as contrast
while we're at it on race in heated rivalry/game changers, admirals coach harv murdock is criminally underused. he is, canonically, not just Black but also, specifically, acknowledged as a trailblazer during his own time as a player. he both says he was "one of only two non-white players" and is stated in scott's narration to have been the only Black player at the time. when he responds to scott coming out he talks about how it felt to be talked about so much for his race, and about being a role model, and hey guys, I swear this is sounding familiar somehow...
i am sick of fics where jj is written as a worse friend than he is in canon. yes he fucked up, no he was not just a homophobe. negative portrayals of what jj actually did, fine. what i am really sick of is when hayden is given grace and sympathy in the Same Fic as jj is written as a one-sided bad friend. if you're only going to give hayden the benefit of the doubt, i am no longer giving YOU the benefit of the doubt for why that is.
consistently having the fic author answer my comment first on every chapter :) i am getting a good grade in comment something that is normal to want and possible to achieve
i hadn't read the book version of the vegas rooftop scene in a while and while i understand why the adaptation made changes i feel like that change specifically is kind of a disservice to shane's character. book shane, while he's at the party and ilya isn't, does have thoughts along the lines of wtf is he really not even going to congratulate me etc. since the show doesn't have internal narration, we get shane expressing these thoughts to ilya instead. but it's... extremely self-centered, because he just wanders up to ilya who is clearly alone on purpose and right off the bat accuses him of being a sore loser. book shane only makes a mild comment about it, actually notices there's something off, meets ilya where's he's at and only says "oh" to the going home in 3 days comment, as opposed to the extremely tone deaf "must be nice." the show version does have some strengths, like pretty neatly capturing their general miscommunication problems the way something like "oh" wouldn't, but it comes at the cost of making shane way more of a dick.
in a reasonable canon, shane would simply have THEE most dependent and intimate relationship with the montreal team nutritionist. like, he has her on speed dial. they text multiple times per day. she spends 60% of her work hours adjusting meal plans for his texture issues and aversions. nobody else really sees how intense their connection is.
when he was crashing out about trading to ottawa, he said, "You know, it's just gonna be really hard to leave melissa," and hayden was sitting right there like. "melissa?? it's gonna be hard to leave MELISSA??"
but i think we can probably convince melissa to move to ottawa with him, don't worry.
okay the hayden thing is a joke but also, he is allowed to hang out with his friend and former teammate as much as he wants, but there are actual problems with sharing advice and information across teams. so shush hayden it IS hard to leave melissa
im so sick of unnecessary dinner scenes in movies 😡 every fucking movie they just want to titillate you with some food because they think you’re a dumb animal who just wants to see mashed potatoes bouncing. if its an IMPORTANT dinner scene where they explain lore then whatever i understand. but they shove useless meals into every movie these days and its disgusting
ok but food is a huge part of human connection, showing characters eating can say a lot about them, even if it's not like a plot point or something dramatic. and yeah sometimes the food is there because they want you to think oh fuck that looks delicious but honestly how is that any different from gratuitous action scenes where the goal is just to make you think oh that was cool as hell. food is a normal part of life, of course it's also in art.
Having to DNF a fic because they have Shane literally say that he wasn’t as good of a captain as Ilya. I can’t do this anymore there is NOTHING in canon to support this fuck ass idea it’s just borne of a desire to justify/explain why Montreal was awful to Shane and Ottawa was good to Ilya. The real answer is a mix of luck and different management and coaching. It’s also often used as a way to make Shane losing the captaincy when he goes to Ottawa less significant by making it seem like he’s happy or relieved about it because he wasn’t as good at it anyways or some bullshit. I’m so fucking tired of this. The diminishment of what happened to Shane in Montreal that happens both in the books and by the fandom is so frustrating. And also the racist undertones of this particular implication (feeding into the stereotype that Asian men cannot be in leadership positions cause they’re not dominant/assertive enough). This is getting exhausting like if you don’t want to address what losing the captaincy was like then just don’t write anything about it. Just leave it out. But do not fucking say that Shane wasn’t as good a captain as Ilya. That’s ridiculous and a pile of lowkey racist bullshit.
Okay so I'm not 100% certain (I just searched the book for the word "captain" which *should* find all relevant scenes but you never know) but re: your tags I don't think we find out the exact year either Shane or Ilya make captain, the only solid date is that Ilya had the A but not C in 2013.
If I were a popular enough fanfic writer for it to be relevant my one request to people doing book binding would be to tell me in advance so I can remove typos I haven't bothered to fix

she is generally pretty good about leaving my food alone. i put away things overnight but unlike other critters I know it's generally safe to walk away from my food for a minute and know she won't try it. there are two (2) exceptions to this. one is when I get rotisserie chicken. this is self explanatory. the other is flaming hot cheetos.
she always, always wants to come up and sniff at opened chip bags, but usually she smells what's inside and goes hm no thanks. not so for flaming hot cheetos. i have accidentally dropped one or two on the floor and she ate them so she knows they are spicy (ish) and she does not care. again this is the only human food she tries to steal from me. she is less nosy about me eating sushi than flaming hot cheetos. what does that even taste like to a cat? why not any of the similarly flavored chips i eat? ma'am what is wrong with you

it's pretty easy to imagine that you are one of some fractional holdout against AI while everyone else has fallen into some misguided love affair with LLMs, and I am so happy to tell you that this is not the case.

Even polling data from companies centered on AI shows significant concern around generative technology. OpenAI isn't meeting internal growth bench posts. On top of all that, Musk and Altman are currently both making fools of themselves in a very public trial.
I wrote this to ground myself because within the last month my workplace and gym have become overrun by AI graphics, then I logged out of Tumblr and immediately discovered that my Chemistry professor has switched to transparently AI generated exam feedback

also. frankly. if it were me I would not *hesitate* to send any individual to space to save humanity. finally watched the movie, it's very sweet in comparison to the book. a little less ethically fraught but that's not a problem for me.
