Happy birthday Xie Lian 🌸
can you get that weird guy out of here please. I’m starting to feel a little bit flustered and i don’t want to confront & come to terms with that right now
HC is so sarcastic and dislikes LQQ so much i'm crying 😭😭 This part in TGCF AD Ep 16:
XL: Lang Qianqiu is a good kid.
HC: Really? What are his good traits? Gege, describe it for me to hear, perhaps I might even be moved.
XL: Hmm... For example, he's guileless.
HC: You mean dull-witted.
XL (thinking of another good trait): He is very honest!
HC: You mean dull-witted.
XL: He is -
HC (interrupting, repeats even more slowly and lazily/contemptuously): You mean dull-witted.
So let me get this straight…
When Wei Wuxian intimidates a produce seller for a cheaper price is playful banter, but when Xue Yang does it is reprehensible threats to a honest merchant.
When Hua Cheng conceals his identity and helps his daozhang repair his roof is sweet attempt to get on his good graces, but when Xue Yang does it it’s predatory behaviour.
When Luo Binghe keeps his (as of then unrequited) crush’s body preserved to cuddle with while frantically searching for a way to revive him is a sign of devotion (if only a bit unhinged), but when Xue Yang does it is downright creepy.
What am I missing.
HELPGHSDKL:FJLHDS:JFHLDK this was such a tender moment, both hua cheng and xie lian remembering memories of something deeply painful to both of them. the hug is sudden, sincere. and sweet.
and then. boom. anti-PDA alarm feng xin
IDK if its a controversial take or not but after so many months of reading tgcf and thinking on the story of JW and XL and HC. The parallels and anti parallels, and what was the point of XL 's story , I have decided that some of my opinions from the first reactions have changed a bit.
As much as I would like to dismiss what XL did and how reacted in book 2 and 4 as understandable mistakes of a God against too great of a force, which I still do too, I also now think, it would be acting like BWX was some outside entity complete outside the laws of nature or cycle of destiny.
BWX aka Jun Wu is not some uncontrollable entity. He is part of the same destiny which binds HC and XL and the terrible fates they were both born into along with their formidable talents. If the Mt Tonglu eruption that destroyed the country of Wuyong was the fate that wiped Jun Wu's original character then Jun Wu himself is the Mt Tonglu to Xie Lian. He is his tribulation made flesh.
As per what XL wanted to become- a savior of common people, he ...truly wasn't trained for it. Not of his own violation mind you, after all how was he supposed to know he is preparing himself wrong when his own elders do not? Nobody thought he needs to be anything more than a martial God to save the common people and be a God at the same time. This is why I like to think Yushi Huang's story exists. There is a reason she is such a prominent fixture in this story despite the fact we never met her face to face before book 3( and narrative timeline wise literally in the Act III)
She is the God that Xie Lian wanted to be since day one but was not prepared for.
Unlike XL, she was trained to cultivate like a common person. Despite being a princess, she was made to work hard and live among the common people. When the tribulation of her life came in form of another future God like Pei Ming, she sacrificed herself in such a way that did save her common people in the Kingdom . XL was on the other hand was trained as a martial god a skill that failed him to save his common people. Being the best swordsman with strongest ability meant nothing when trying to face drought, plague, and revolt. He needed to be medically inclined, socially intelligent and a King all at once and he couldn't be. He is not a King who can make harder decisions one over the other, he is a Cultivator. He hasn't done much thought on understanding unnatural plagues but saber forms. His understanding and empathy has not been tested with worldly experience at all.
So when every God, including YSH knew where to look and what went wrong with Xianle Kingdom, XL himself was clueless because he didn't even knew where he should have looked on his own and not wait for Goushi or his father or his cousin or any out of touch nobles should be telling him at his prayers for 3 years.
Nobody trained him to be that. He only had one year worth of independent travel experience among common people and as much empathy he has for people, no matter the class or region they are from, its still at the end limited. Hence why he got disillusioned so badly in Book 4, whereas Yushi Huang was never in doubt that his father would get her killed to save his own hide and that of his favorite children.
It took 800 years for XL to understand the fundamentals that YSH understood since day one. But he eventually got there. This is why he was better equipped to deal with the problems he faced 800 years ago, like how to deal with many-faced-disease without resorting to mass slaughter or understanding one cannot save everyone or those who do not want to save themselves( that is how he dealt better with Lang Ying[jr]'s betrayal)

I don’t care what the new, uncensored versions say. Hua Cheng being a rough bully dom top in bed is too heteronormative for me to ignore how it makes no sense for his character, sorry.
Fucking. I keep getting comments like ‘How would you know his character better than the author?’ And ‘Just cause you don’t have the kink doesn’t make it heteronormative:/‘ and I don’t vibe with it. I realise y’all couldn’t utilise reading comprehension enough to get through the original post, so this might not help cause you’re still illiterate, but maybe it’ll send you in the right direction.
(Yeah it was only two people and three comments, but I’m nipping this in the bud because I would rather rip my own eyes out of my head and bury them in my garden than actually try and debate barely-literal heterosexuals.)
Firstly, I don’t claim to know MXTX’s characters better than they do. What I do claim to know, however, is how character writing works. I fucking hate the claim of ‘But how would you know it’s ooc better than the AUTHOR?’ like. An author is fully capable of writing their own characters in a way that doesn’t line up with their established personality traits. While Hua Cheng is MXTX’s character and I can’t tell them what to write, I am well within my rights to point out how little sense it makes with Hua Cheng’s established character to be some rough dom sex bully. He’s literally the most caring, devoted, protective person on the planet toward Xie Lian. Not to mention, MXTX didn’t even write him like that even in the uncensored version. There’s a way more concise explanation (with a screenshot) of this in the reblogs, but I’ll explain briefly. While there is one scene in the uncensored version where Hua Cheng is acting rough and handsy, it’s also a scene where he’s blatantly acting outside of his own control. With his normal personality, he would never even touch Xie Lian without assured consent, let along make out with him like that. Also, he was handsy. No mention of bullying, cruelty or weird dom vibes. I was misinformed when I made my original post, because of everyone’s immediate gushing about him being a borderline sexual batterer, and that’s my bad. Also see the screenshot in the aforementioned reblog, where Xie Lian recalls Hua Cheng’s voice as being gentle and without coercion. Rough dom bully top abuser Hua Cheng is not and was never confirmed- but back to the original point, yes. An audience has full rights to point out inconsistent character writing where it exist. What, do I need to flash my media literacy license. Let me on the crime scene, I work for the FBI (Fans of Book Investigation).
Secondly, what kinks I have is irrelevant to my interpretation of media. I’m actually pretty fucking kinky, and I’m super into the whole rough sex, dom top, bullying thing. I think it’s hot as shit. That being said, I was still uncomfortable with this characterisation. Why? Because the idea of the designated ‘guy’ of the relationship (to explain that, while MXTX didn’t write either of them as the ‘guy’ or ‘girl’ in the relationship -thank god- fandoms often latch onto the idea that one character, usually the one who’s taller and less meek or polite, is the guy in the relationship. That’s why the shorter and nicer one gets feminised so violently) being sexually violent and insatiable is neither new, nor a foreign idea in heteronormativity. It happens a lot; the designated ‘man’ in the relationship is constantly horny and super sexually brutish, because tHe bOyFrIeNd wAnTs sEx bUt tHe gIrLfRiEnD sAyS nO cAuSe gIrLs dOn’T gEt hOrNy oR kInKy. It’s bullshit, and y’all need to stop pretending not to notice so your faves can stay unproblematic UwU.

"The images that Xie Lian was seeing in his left and right eyes were different, and it was incredibly uncomfortable. He blinked lightly, which made him discover that his right eye could still see the scene outside even while closed. So he kept his eyes shut."
TGCF Volume 5, page 253
So this is when Hua Cheng is sharing his butterfly vision with Xie Lian by touching foreheads with him. Which is a very cute hualian moment, but I actually wanna talk about something else - Xie Lian describes having those conflicting views in his left and right eye as really uncomfortable, and while of course Hua Cheng has had many years to get used to it, I think it's still a pretty good example at just how skilled he is at multi-tasking. Because he apparently does this - using butterfly vision and/or hearing to keep tabs on different locations/people - all the time. Meaning at any given moment he could be listening to several different conversations at once, plus "flipping through" different views in one half of his vision, while also paying attention to his current surroundings. And not just that, he has to sort through and evaluate all that input and information. Just thinking about all that gives me sensory overload.
Also, technically speaking, having only one eye means he should have no depth perception - in that eye, that is. His butterflies don't have that problem. Imagine constantly switching between vision with and without depth perception, that'd be so disorienting. But he's evidently trained himself to do all this to a point where he can just seamlessly switch back and forth or use both his normal vision and butterfly vision simultaneously.
In that sense, I also see the butterflies as a sort of disability aid. Because with his right eye missing, Hua Cheng has a huge blind spot on that side. And while yes, even as a child he used to constantly cover that eye, so he's had hundreds of years to learn how to compensate for this. But the butterflies allow him to navigate the world in a way that is significantly different to someone with full vision and also something he's honed into a unique skill - he's still blind on one side, but he's made it much harder for enemies to take advantage of that and actually learned to "see" in ways that they can't.
I don’t care what the new, uncensored versions say. Hua Cheng being a rough bully dom top in bed is too heteronormative for me to ignore how it makes no sense for his character, sorry.
I think fans are exaggerating how rough he is, the only translations I've seen have added some lines about him fondling Xie Lian during their Mt tonglu makeout (that XL enjoys!!) which I don't think justifies calling him a bully?
A lot of ppl are brain damaged from heteronormativity and think abusive sex is hot, but I don't think he's written that way. The amnesia extra specifically mentions that Hua Cheng is very caring and though Xie Lian cries from overstimulation he's 100% willing.
You know that thing about the HuaLian missing each other many times? So now it's official. In chapter 47 of the webnovel they talk about this:
Y’all I spent all night looking for a fic and I can’t find it so if anyone knows the name of this TGCF Hualian post-canon fic where xl gets cursed to die over and over unless mq, fx, and hc get like a specific herb on a mountain and they end up having to like break his leg to make it work bc Angst
That would be amazing pls pls pls💕😋❤️
