SALAMAN TOOR was born in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1983. He lives and works in New York City. His figurative paintings depict intimate, everyday moments in the lives of imaginary, dark-skinned, queer young men embedded in contemporary cosmopolitan culture. Toor is playfully inspired by the history of European painting, in particular by some Baroque, Rococo, Romantic and Impressionist masters with whom he shares an aesthetic kinship, while at the same time introducing elements of fantasy, humor and cultural hybridization. At the center of his work are always anxieties and the comedy of identity.
Toor has had several solo shows in the United States and Pakistan and his work is included in the permanent collection of the Tate Modern
