This is one of those pieces where time really benefits the end result. And how appropriate it is the Doctor, the time traveler. I did this one during an extended break on a different project which allowed me to really do all the fine detail on this one. There were no shortcuts on this. Small digital pencil working in tiny strokes, building up the darker tones through repetition. #doctorwho #drwho #illustration #art #petercapaldi https://ift.tt/3esFzJN
This illustration of David Bowie was actually done as a birthday gift for a good friend. I'm really happy with the way it turned out and I think one of the secrets behind that is that need to get a piece done. I was about twenty minutes late for the birthday dinner in question as I was putting the finishing touches on this one and strangely, I think that helps focus an artist. It keeps us from getting slowed down by the questions and just let our instincts take over. There's very little I don't like about the piece and I think artistic instincts have a lot to do with it. #davidbowie #bowie https://ift.tt/2O8axfR
Started the day off a little different. Decided to do a quick portrait of WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen. Really enjoyed the series and she was fantastic. Looking forward to her appearance in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. #wandavision #mcu #elizabetholsen #ScarletWitch #disney https://ift.tt/3qoH1PL

Work in progress from our latest Insider comic with Business Insider. It feels good to open up the linework a little bit and let the strokes have their own life. I sometimes have to fight myself when it comes to being too precious with my line. It's a challenging balance when having to do likenesses because a line can say a lot and you need to be in control of it. https://ift.tt/3kLqzIr
Some ideas remain just that, ideas. They get sketched and despite their potential, for one reason or another they don't make it to the drawing board. This is one of those. River Song remains one of my favorite characters in the Whoniverse and I always wanted to see her in one of our Doctor Who comics. It never happened, at least during my short tenure but it didn't stop me from coming up with ideas. This was a doodle for possibly a cover or a pitch featuring River, taking the lead as you'd expect and dipping the Doctor as she returns fire to whatever universe threatening enemy is in her path. Maybe one day I'll finish it up but it has sat in the files for some time so I thought I'd share. #DoctorWho #mattsmith https://ift.tt/3kGyiax
I think I teased this one a while ago. I love playing with negative space and sharp contrasts in black and white. It's a whole different process to a more typical illustration. #batman https://ift.tt/3uPFPZp
Pulling this one out of the vault. When I started doing Sherlock pieces ages ago, honestly, no one was doing them. Each time I did one people would go nuts for it. Steven Moffat even wrote on Twitter (before he deleted his account) about one of my pieces. I got to meet him years later and he still remembered the work. It was a fun time and I know it was primarily due to Sherlock being such a hit and Benedict Cumberbatch being so captivating. This was the second Sherlock piece I had ever done and at the time was before I was working digitally so this was done entirely in painstaking brush and ink, even the letters. The one trick I did use was for the ink stains below the tipped over bottle: I brushed some ink on the underside of my ink bottle and pressed it against the page. #sherlock #illustration #BenedictCumberbatch https://ift.tt/3q5EwC2
Here's another work in progress for our upcoming comic with Business Insider. It actually has a bit of a Chris Hemsworth vibe though that wasn't the intention. Lot's of bearded fellas in this one. #wip https://ift.tt/3pXUg9X
This is one of my all time favorite pieces I have done and largely no one has cared. That's art I guess. It started as just a doodle on a piece of copy paper. That's another thing about art. You're going to do your favorite work under your least artsy circumstances. The doodle looked nice so I expanded on it, then I inked it and it still looked pretty good, so I colored it. Honestly, my opinion of my work will live and die based on whether or not I did a decent job coloring it and usually I hate my color. This turned out awesome, in my opinion. It may just be because I'm such a big fan of Tank Girl and the work of Jamie Hewlett that something clicked. Or it could be for those same reasons that I convinced myself that a terrible piece is somehow amazing. Whatever. I enjoyed it. Find the things you love and make art inspired by it. It'll either turn out great or you'll love it so much that you can't tell it's awful. #illustration #art #tankgirl https://ift.tt/37PC789
Here's a good #throwbackthursday to a Judge Dredd cover I did. Who doesn't love Dredd? I was lucky enough to get to do this cover for IDW Publishing's Judge Dredd series and most importantly I got to include Pug Dredd! A true honor. https://ift.tt/3koingK
Hard at work on the newest Insider Comic for Insider. We'll be covering one of the craziest stories from 2020 that went largely unnoticed. You'll been blown away by this one. https://ift.tt/3pSqx2j
Our last Insider comic feature a few shots of the Capitol which, from the perspective of the person who has to draw all those tiny little details, is a breathtaking piece of architecture. The process got us discussing the different state Capitol Buildings and which ones were our favorite and least favorite. Do yourself a favor and peruse Google for a look at all the different Capitol buildings in the US. You'd be surprised at how different some of them are. Which one is your favorite. Include a picture with your answer so we can see. https://ift.tt/3proDWR
