LGBT? LGBTQ? Queer? QUILTBAG? GSM? GSRM?
What’s the best word or acronym to describe this diverse community? Is there a perfect balance between length and inclusivity?
LGBT - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender This is by far the most common acronym used today to describe non-heterosexual/cisgender people. Unfortunately, it leaves out many identities that are an essential part of this community - people who identify as asexual, intersex (and not transgender), or don’t want to be defined by binary orientation.
LGBTQ - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer This acronym improves slightly on LGBT by adding the ‘queer’ label for people who identify as such, but it still leaves out many identities that are not always encompassed by ‘queer’.
Queer This word started off as anti-gay slur in the early 1900s, but started being reclaimed by non-heterosexual/cisgender people in the ’80s - a process which continues through today. The main issue with this word is the baggage it carries and the fact that it is still used pejoratively by many people.
QUILTBAG - Queer/Questioning, Undecided, Intersex, Lesbian, Transgender/Transsexual, Bisexual, Ally/Asexual, Gay/Genderqueer This is the famed ‘alphabet soup’ acronym. Instead of using broad language (ie GSM/GSRM), QUILTBAG explicitly includes all of the most common identities.
GSM - Gender or Sexual Minority GSM tries to correct for the exclusion found in the LGBT/LGBTQ/QUILTBAG acronyms by encompassing everyone who identifies as non-heterosexual/cisgender, though asexual identities (romantic/non-sexual orientation) are still not accounted for.
GSRM - Gender, Sexual, and Romantic Minority Again correcting for the exclusions of GSM, GSRM explicitly includes romantic identity as well.

What is your preferred acronym for non-heterosexual/cisgender - identified people?
GSRM FTW.
It is the first time I felt an acronym actually included me.
You?

“We believe that applying the statute so that its reach into our homes and personal relationships is inconsistent with (its) wording and intent.”
South Carolina is one of more than 20 states that has passed an expansive Stand Your Ground law authorizing individuals to use deadly force in self-defense. The law has been used to protect a man who killed an innocent bystanderwhile pointing his gun at several teens he called “women thugs.” But prosecutors in Charleston are drawing the line at domestic violence.
In the cases of women who claim they feared for their lives when confronted with violent intimate abusers, prosecutors say the Stand Your Ground law shouldn’t apply.
“(The Legislature’s) intent … was to provide law-abiding citizens greater protections from external threats in the form of intruders and attackers,” prosecutor Culver Kidd told the Post and Courier. “We believe that applying the statute so that its reach into our homes and personal relationships is inconsistent with (its) wording and intent.”
oh. well then.
Once again we see who SYG is REALLY for.
Still waiting to hear from all those apologists who tell women to “Just get a gun!” if we don’t wanna experience abuse and violence from men.

When did doing something ‘like a girl’ become an insult?
Watch the full Always commercial that seeks to answer this question.
The part that gets me is at the end of the commercial, when they ask one of the first ladies if she had a chance to do her demonstration of “running like a girl” over again, what would she do differently and she says, “I would run like myself.” I legit cried.
Nicholas Lord, a Navy sailor since 2008 currently on active duty, is under investigation after threatening to rape a young woman who is a Navy recruit.
The young woman posted a photo of herself on Facebook, captioning it to say she’s proud of how she’s working hard to get in shape for the Navy, and she’s excited to be leaving soon. The photo was shared on the page for her Delayed Entry Program for her fellow Navy recruits.
Nicholas Lord, who is not a current recruit and who has been serving in the Navy since 2008, then commented:
You’ll end up pregnant real soon you fucking wh***. If I could and I knew you, I’d hold you down and rape you.
The next day, Lord gloated about his threat on his Facebook page, updating his status to say he’d been “trolling feminist pages.” In case it needs to be said, the Facebook page for a Navy program is not a “feminist page.” It’s a Navy recruiting page. (x) (x)
I don’t know what the Navy’s punishment system is like, but I hope he gets the worst possible. I hope they investigate his past history in the military, too. If he’s bold enough to outright threaten female recruits, under his own name, on public, Navy-run social media, I seriously doubt he hasn’t harassed and threatened female sailors. He may even have raped them.
Especially given the military’s problem with letting men get away with harassment and rape, they need to severely punish him.
Send it viral, and he will see ramifications.
If you only reblog one thing today I hope it’s this.
signal boost the shit out of this. i wanna see this dickwad’s name everywhere.

Transgender youth who take puberty-delaying hormone treatments are more likely to be happier when they fully transition, according to a new study.
The study found that starting on hormone replacements around age 14 resulted in better mental health for trans youth, and that they had an easier time transitioning into their lived and true gender identity later on.
“The first thing this study shows is that transgender young people, with appropriate treatment, can function at the same psychological level as the rest of the population,” Jenifer McGuire, co-author of the study, told BuzzFeed News. “They have the same distribution as everyone else when they’re treated properly.”
The Dutch study, which involved 22 transgender men and 33 transgender women, found that because of the early hormone treatment, the participants ultimately had no more emotional distress, anxiety, or issues with body image than their peers in the general population after they had transitioned. They also required less gender reassignment surgery, as physical characteristics that develop during puberty were suppressed.
Studies like this are so, so important because they add another layer of credibility to the work we already know is important. We know one of the ways to help trans youth become their true selves as happily and healthily as possible, and the research clearly shows that we should keep doing it.
…the older I get, the more I see how women are described as having gone mad, when what they’ve actually become is knowledgeable and powerful and fucking furious.
