Avengers Endgame & Natasha - Initial Thoughts

So, uh, Damn. It makes perfect sense that after the Snap of Infinity War that Natasha is the one that keeps it together and continues the Mission for five years after. That’s all she has, and she’s kinda like Steve Rogers in that way. Her only family is the Avengers, along with Clint’s family. She wants them all back together. So...she and Clint go to Vormir to retrieve the Soul Stone. I loved this. I loved all the callbacks to Avengers 1. I loved they competed to be the hero. The Red Skull naming her “Daughter of Ivan” thing feels like a set up for the solo Black Widow movie. There is a cut scene in Civil War where Natasha says she found her parent’s graves, but it was cut. So...Is this not canon because in the later Endgame Nat said that she never knew her parents' names? “Daughter of Ivan”, if you know the comic books, feels like Gamora’s “Daughter of Thanos.” That’s all. Maybe biological or not.

With only Cap (Steve Rogers) entrusted to return all the stones to their original times, he’d need backup. Prime!Cap also told Other!Cap that Bucky was alive in 2012, but could have waited till 2014ish to return the Soul Stone. That’s two  years of fun timeline shenanigans.  I do believe Prime!Nat is dead and can’t be brought back into the Prime timeline. However, thanks to Jeremy Berimy stuff (see The Good Place), Prime!Nat can live up to 2014ish in the Prime!MCUverse and then either before or after that date in any alternate timelines that branch off before Prime!Cap & Friends returning the Soul Stone to Vormir. So. Many. Possibilities.  Have fun, fanfic writers!

Agh! Natasha’s hair is all over the place, which makes me wonder about the time all of these events are occurring in. Sometimes it’s red, sometimes it’s blond. In some trailers it’s short, in some trailers it’s long. Argh! I know that Marvel Studies has shenanigans in trailers, so I don’t care to speculate. However, I like to see Natasha in her classic red.

whoa, I might got it wrong but Natasha watching Bucky turn to the dust didn't happened on or off the screen, right? On the screen it was just Steve and off the screen she came running from a different direction, while being trapped beforehand. That deleted scene was originally used I guess instead of Steve, but they went with Steve again. smh Good fic material indeed and I might use it for mine.

From what I understand from an out-take, Nat approaching Steve and/or Bucky at the dusting was. indeed, cut out of the final IW movie. Instead, the narrative is that Nat goes to Vision *after* Steve has already left Bucky’s ashes behind to check on the Mission Objective. So it is possible Nat and/or Steve had their own private heartbeat of mourning Bucky.That gap of travel between Bucky’s dusting and the Vision check-in could indeed make for a good fic. Have at!

What are your thoughts on the deleted footage from IW with Nat's reaction to Bucky dying? You should totally include it in a fic!

Dear Anon,

I’m frustrated that Natasha and Bucky’s interactions are forever being cut in the MCU. My only hope is that the official Marvel/MCU page on Black Widow specifically includes the Winter Soldier in her Red Room days. In rewatching the scene, Cap rallied the Avengers to himself (to protect Wanda and Vision) and Natasha was just behind Bucky, running with Okoye when he was energy-blasted and she was entrapped. While Thanos seemed to use the Power stone on Bucky and others, he used the Reality Stone on her (to change her surroundings to entrap her.) I’m thinking after Thanos’ escape, the ground went back to its normal state and Natasha was freed.It seems the pacing was 1) Bucky was Dusted just in front of Steve. 2) Steve was shocked for a bit and then did the Captain-Thing of checking in on the Objective [protect Vision]. Natasha got her own private time with Bucky’s dust for maybe a half-minute before she also snapped out of her grief and went to Steve. This was entirely off-screen and could be good fic-fodder.Thanks for the question. P.S. I also love both of Bucky and Nat asked “What the hell?” in Infinity War. Like they were used to each other’s swearing.

There’s a whole fanfic material here of how Bucky got his current workwear. The costume designers obviously went back to his navy-and-brown combo of WWII and the Howling Commandos (also seen again in his battle outfit of Infinity War). The blue also may conect him to the Border Tribe of Wakanda? The scarf, the pants, the shirt. It’s beaten to hell like he has been through decades (and Steve Rogers has been, too!) Did he pick out his Euro-American clothes from the leftover possessions of some cheeky and stupid private militia trying to invade Wakanda between? Bucky loves extra pockets; always has. He’s coming to terms with the Wakandan climate (thus the torn off sleeve), but can’t break the habit. He continues to hide his amputated arm. Why?  Anyway, I have questions about Bucky’s transition from his well-dressed and man-bunned self of the Black Panther post-credit scene and this of Infinity War. I love the switch; I love meta-ing about it.

If I ever get to meet Sebastian Stan at a con, I want to ask him if they simply made him tuck his RL left arm behind his back, or did they green-sleeve/CGI out the arm. Because I could see either.

Out of the blue question, if you don't mind: In CA: Civil War, the cut scene of Natasha in the church mentions her finding her parents graves. In the novel version of the movie, she talks about the culling of the Red Room Recruits. I'm annoyed that neither version was used, but I find myself wishing that the Red Room dialog was what was actually said, as it seems both more appropriate to the Red Room, and to the tensions of Civil War, and to Natasha's pragmatism. Which do you prefer, or think?

Anon,I have read/viewed both cut dialogs from that scene. Here are my thoughts:1 - The seaching for her parent’s graves was a call back to the end of CA: The Winter Soldier when it was subtexted that the reason it would take Natasha a while to make new covers was because she was inspired by Steve Rogers to spend some time figuring out who her *genuine* self was after the fall of SHIELD. It also meant that she was, like Steve, an orphan, and the Avengers were the only family she had.  Natasha’s choices in Civil War were all about trying to keep her found-fam together or at least alive. It was Natasha herself that didn’t want to be alone.2 - The other cut lines of dropping the Red Room recruits in Syberia with only enough supplies for one person to last foreshadowed the airport fight. The Red Room called for there to be only one victor/survivor, while Natasha let both Bucky and Cap go because she wanted to choose a third path that Secretary Ross wasn’t giving them. She wasn’t, this time, letting her ‘masters’ have their victory. (Also, to get very-very speculative, there was some cut footage of the Winter Soldier on a wintery landscape, gazing down at something. I wonder if there was supposed to be a part of a scene where Natasha met the Soldier, after surviving her ordeal.)We may never know the details behind any of these mentions of Natasha’s past until the stand-alone Black Widow movie comes out.

You can see the nods to their “parenting” in the decor of Wanda’s room in CACW. Check out the round picture frame and red-sanded hourglass on the top shelf, and the hawk’s feather too for “Uncle Clint’.

Hello, I wanted ask: You've been very open about discussing Infinity War, but are you open to any speculation about the fourth movie? Or the MCU after it? I'm trying to keep a grip on thinking too far ahead, both because the next year will be long enough, and because IW proved that anything goes as far as plot. But I do think about what could happen, or what I'd like to see happen, and I wondered if you had any thoughts on it you'd be willing to share or discuss. Good night.

I encourage you to seek out @blessedharlot and that corner of tumblr, for lots and lots of IW speculation, as RL has swallowed me up for a few days. Still, here is an interesting thought: (Spoilers below.)

The Infinity Gauntlet looks pretty “chewed-up” after the Snap. It may only have one use left in it, and my guess for that would be Tony Stark using it in a big sacrifice play (again).

@wynterwydow Thank you! And oh my gosh i had forgotten about the herb, thanks for the reminder. Well, tbh I thought they might handwave away the herb problem, with some stash or replant in the intervening time. But now that they have this predicament of T'Challa disappearing, that makes me think the lack of herb may continue to be an issue. They could be pantherless. Or, maybe Shuri takes the throne and maybe M'Baku takes BP duties, minus the herb?

So much of this depends on how much time has passed in between IW and A4. Im assuming one year for now, but we wont know for sure for a while.

I hadnt thought of that element of T'Chaka’s story. I did notice how Shuri’s immediate upgrades to the suit - the ability to fit under a business suit and the ability to absorb kinetic energy - both might have helped her father, had he been wearing it. So much love in that family.

@blessedharlot Wow. You’ve given me another headcaonon on how driven Shuri is about her inventions and may be interalizing her grief for her father. Frankly, if the Heart-Shaped Herb was so important, you’d think Wakanda would have a stash of seeds in a vault somwhere else. I supose it depends on what Feige and the BP2 writers have in mind for the post-Infinithy War aftermath. Shuri and M’Baku are such polar-opposites, that dynamic would be really interesting to explore. Also, boy...the idea of Bucky being entrapped in his most idyllic memories, and those being with Natalia back in Russia? I would be a wreck seeing that, in the best way possible.

Eleven questions answered

These came from the awesome @cairistiona7 , a fellow fanfic writer. I’ll play along!

1. What’s the best meal you’ve ever had?

When I wrapped up my Masters degree, my mentor took me to a small restaurant that was $100 a plate. (Mentor was a foody). We ate the chef’s special, which was ongoing small courses delivered to our table every 15 minutes or so. I am not a seafood person, but I loved the novelty of raw oysters hand-selected by said chef. There were many courses, and wine, and the evening passed away in a gastronomical hazy bliss.

2. Spring, summer, fall or winter? Early summer. When there are still flowers and I’m not roasting.

3. Best advice you’ve ever received? Wow. This is hard. Although I am not particularly religious, I often think of the Serenity prayer, because it reminds me of both my power to take control of my life circumstances, but also that my power to control others has limits.

4. Favorite dessert or snack? A salad of home-grown tomatoes with mozzarella and fresh basil, drizzled with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

5. Favorite non-Marvel fictional, non-Tolkien character (because I have a foot in each fandom)? DCEU’s Wonder Woman is tying with “Atomic Blonde’s” Lorraine Broughton ATM. My earliest fandom that I can remember was for Dean Anderson’s MacGyver.

6. Shoe-sock-shoe-sock or sock-sock-shoe-shoe? Both socks before both shoes. This way, if something calls away my attention, I’m not hobbling around with one foot bare and one foot fully dressed and heeled.

7. Do you cook and if so, what’s your favorite dish to prepare? Damn skippy, I cook! For potluck, my go-to is homemade mac and cheese. I can make a cheese sauce like the pros.

8. Preferred musical genre? I listen to a lot of singer/songwriter indie stuff. I’m pretty open to most stuff except songs that include a lot of misogyny and glorification of violence. And screaming. For some reason, I don’t get jazz.

9. Bucket-list if-money-and-time-were-no-barrier vacation? Walking the Camino de Santiago.  

10. Do you collect anything that isn’t fandom related? Puzzle boxes. And although not fully complete, Cards Against Humanity.

Just remember, however much goats are stubborn assholes, they were never as much trouble to Bucky as Steve Rogers.
