When we talk about detransitioners we really should be careful as to not ascribe them an identity beyond "someone who has stoped transitioning". Most people who detransition are a different gender from their agab and even many of the detransitioners who don't feel they're gender is different from their agab still identify with being trans.

Most detransitioners are not people who realized that they mistook their identity, rather they are that gender but are not in a safe position to express that. For example a transwoman might detransition because she is in a very transphobic community. A lot of cases are people detransition for their own safety.

While some detransitioners are trans people who just got the gender wrong. They may have thought they were a transman and gone on T and changed their gender marker and socially transitioned to be perceived as a man, but then realized they're nonbinary and would be more comfortable not being perciverd as man or a woman.

And some are trans and know they're gender but just for whatever reason want to or need to stop taking hormones.

On the other hand, some detransitioners really did realize that theyre gender aligns with their agab. But because they had transitioned and now are going on to reverse that, which is a process of transitioning in itself, they may still consider themselves trans. It's important to realize that these are not usually the people spreading transphobia and trying to gatekeep transitioning.
