i’ve been horrifically obsessed with “turn on the bright lights” album for 2 years…
i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.
in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.
But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.
our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.
anyway, happy pride, americans. i’m truly sorry that most of you don’t see the negative impact your nation’s culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and culture’s queer history, don’t accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.
the little booklets in cd cases with pictures of the artists are there so you can caress them gently with your fingers btw they teach you this in compact disc school
finally a good day
i can’t believe i haven’t watched “but i’m a cheerleader” until today!
happy pride month!

if you go looking for doom and gloom all you will see is doom and gloom. if you go looking for reduced items at the grocery store you may find a littol treat
going through a creative crisis
There's always a moment of intense cultural whiplash whenever I realize I'm talking to someone who thinks "legal" and "illegal" are meaningful categories and ascribes innate goodness to following the law. It's like meeting a space alien.

british money’s called “quid”, short for liquid, which used to be the official currency. any liquid. “as long as it splash we use it for cash”- old british saying
The term “bank” comes from this too, as people would go down to the river banks to collect more quid
The wealthy would store their quid in large tanks, and they would place sharks (which are smooth) in there to guard it
The thing with bassists is you either get a nonchalant guy (gender neutral) or the most evil being you've ever met, no in between
i dislike changing rooms
had to make the inverse situation of this. lets give it up for time blindness yayyy
Thanks to my mp3 player, I’ll learn which exact year every one of my favourite albums came out…
The reading comprehension and overall common sense on this website is piss poor.
how dare you say we piss on the poor
