I didn't really have any original thoughts initially (╥﹏╥) I just hate using 'prev', that won't keep the tags i like safe.
However, I love X-Men and one of my favorite facts about Erik is that he is canonically able to completely manipulate the electromagnetic field of entire planets and is one of the most powerful mutants ever, on par with Phoenix.
The Marvel wiki states that he has control of all metals in addition to control of all kinds of all forms of magnetism, not necessarily connected mutations. "It is unclear whether Magneto's power is psionic or purely physiological in nature." So it has not been established/confirmed in comic canon if it is a mental mutation rather than a physical one.
I firmly believe that Erik would be able to tell by vibes alone if a metal was ferrous. Atomic structure determines whether something is magnetic or not, so if he was manipulating metals solely by the magnetic field he wouldn't have anything to work with with nonferrous metals.
"Magneto is also capable of creating powerful electromagnetic fields capable of moving and manipulating nonmetallic objects, as well as levitating them (he can also do this via force fields)." In this case, even if he just had control over magnetism, whether an object was itself inherently magnetic, i.e. bullets, is not an issue. I am not sure what the fundamental difference between this and telekinesis is in the X-Men universe(s) and I will not be exploring that at this juncture.
X-Men creators and I both love character driven strengths and weaknesses, so having his powers be limited (if Magneto can be considered limited; he is so OP, he manipulate matter, open wormholes, astral project, and, again, REVERSE THE ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD OF AN ENTIRE PLANET) by such a fundamental, deep rooted trauma is very interesting and very possible.
However, I feel like this is all rendered slightly moot by the official position of him having control over ALL metal and ALL magnetism (which is one form of energy, so who knows how far down the rabbit hole his abilities can go??? when does it become basic energy manipulation?)
On to his helmet. In the Stewart-McKellen films I think it is implied if not outright stated that Erik used the designs for Cerebro to reverse engineer a way to block out telepaths. In the McAvoy-Fassbender films, Sebastian Shaw/the Soviets specifically engineered it to block out telepaths. In the comics, Magneto is the one who designed it once again, but it is specifically based on circuitry and magnetism, so his powers rather than the type of metal.
So Logan's brain is still exposed to telepaths and Erik's is not, as brainwaves are a form of neural oscillation, which are driven by neurons, which are driven by electrical impulses, which therefore fall under Magneto's purview. Logan is still resistant to telepathy, but that appears to be more due to his healing factor than his thick skull.

super similar in concept. Just one problem: I'm not really in the interest of posting what is very obviously a fun little thing made by a fan without some credit but I cannot find a LICK of credit for this. Hoping someone with more fandom lore than I might be able to assist in locating a source for (what I consider to be) a CLASSIC xmen meme
So so late but yes I looked over her portfolio when @akasanata suggested the same thing and linked this post and I do think it's very likely she's the original artist (was wondering why it was so low quality on her blog but that could be anything from old tumblr compressing files more than I remember or even having to shrink the file herself.) Assuming it is her, I hope she knows how fucking funny this is. It brings me joy every time I think about it and served as my computer background for many months in high school.

The ONLY thing the X-Men movies did right was the Xavier mansion. This shit was beautiful, I want to go there. That's exactly how the audience should feel about it too. It should be an iconic pop culture place.
The Huge green grounds! All that's missing is the lake with the boat house and the stable

The wood everywhere!!! The aesthetic!
The small effective classes that are just normal rooms!
And finally.... this kitchen is to die for!!! The greenery, the stained glass!
I may not totally agree with the fort-like exterior but this issss a beautiful place. Xavier has taste (and mostly money)
magneto: *wears a metal helmet that prevents xavier from reading his mind, thus distancing himself from him and also making sure he can’t hurt him*
xavier: *knowingly uses a metal wheelchair, knowing that magneto would never use his disability against him and feeling safe even going head to head against his friend at an obvious disadvantage*
I know I don't post a lot anymore but for anyone coming here for XMen 97 stimulating your nostalgia into a tumblr browse, please remember to at the very least pirate the new series, but post nothing about it in promotion of Disney +. This doesn't just mean not posting about going to watch Disney +, it does not mean posting public links or hosting watch parties with followers or discord servers- this means not posting about it in celebration of it until Disney and more specifically the Marvel division of Disney understand that we're not letting them make money off of a movie character named after a colonial massacre.
If you watch it and don't give Disney money? Fine- how would I even know? Just don't post about the series in a positive way that might attract someone who hadn't noticed it was out or might not be familiar with the series OR reasons for boycott.
Headcanon that magneto does in fact have telepathy but it's not like typical psychic telepathy rather it's due to the way he perceives the electromagnetic spectrum and by proxy electrical impulses
