at the risk of bringing Mirri Maz Duur discourse back, is so baffling to me how the canon fact that she killed Rhaego is still up to debate for some people. just saw a fairly recent comment from someone saying that Jorah is the one to blame and hmmm really??? aside from Mirri freely admitting to killing Rhaego, that her intention was always a life for a life - Rhaego for Drogo - that she cites the stallion who mounts the world prophecy, implying that she stopped it by killing him.... that, if you look at the order of events, Dany's labour starts as Mirri ritual does and goes wrong as the ritual intensifies.... if you want explicit confirmation you don't have to look for some article in the WOIAF app. the confirmation is right there in the books – in the ACOK appendix:

— {Rhaego}, stillborn son of Daenerys and Khal Drogo, slain in the womb by Mirri Maz Duur

like. i promise you can view Mirri as a tragic, sympathetic character with understandable (and even heroic) motivations while acknowledging she ended up hurting innocent people, like Rhaego, and even Dany herself, because Dany wasn't the one with agency to hurt Mirri, Drogo was. in fact you're supposed to!!! you're supposed to get the complexity and tragedy of this arc instead of letting it all fly over your head.

I absolutely LOVE this part of AGOT for how it is both seemingly simple but at the same time more and more convoluted the more you analize every factor that came into play

And my running theory at this point is that: Mirri did NOT kill Rhaego, although may have used him as a blood sacrifice (which i also believe to be doubtfull at the very least)

Fundamentally - there is no evidence to suggest her actions were malicious in any way. No the words of "The stallion who mounts the world will burn no cities now. His khalasar shall trample no nations into dust" cannot be taken as admission of guilt. Because she's not admitting to anything, she doesn't even hint at that. Its a taunt, a very cruel taunt and stating a fact that a supposed genocidal prophecy has been halted. Knowing that Mirri has firsthand expirience with Dothraki enslavement, her words are completely understandable. She's essentially saying "Noone else will suffer like I did".

Even more damming situational evidence are the actions Mirri takes before and after Rhaego's death. She obeys Daenerys' orders to heal Drogo and uses a viable form of medieval healing - animal skin paultice and she literally saves Daenerys from dying in labour. She warns Daenerys at least once and discourages her from using blood magic.

So let me ask one simple question - if she planned to kill Rhaego, why would she heal Daenerys afterwards? Because of cruelty? Perhaps, but all of Mirri's previous actions suggest her will to live, she obeyed orders even if they went against her own beliefs, because otherwise she would have been killed.

Next evidence to suggest that Rhaego was always going to be a stillborn - Daenerys comes from a long line of first degree incest and her genetical pull would be as dry as Sahara Desert. Even her own mother suffered from several stillbirths which once again proves a degree of probability for to be inherited.

What most likely happened in my opinion is as follows:

-Mirri did attempt to heal Drogo, which was unsucessfull due to him contaminating the wound

-Mirri did perform a blood sacrifice with the intended life to be traded for Drogo being Rhaego

-Rhaego was always going to be stillborn child and him being born already dead caused Drogo to be stuck in a catatonic state

TBF if the last thing my mother ever did before dying after giving birth to the useless baby whose care I'll be responsible for as a 5y old orphan was to crown me king and tell me to win back my throne and wreck vengeance on the usurper dogs that killed my father, I would maybe sell said useless baby to the fantasy horse nomads for a big scary army too

Main reason why I struggle to enjoy modern fantasy is how common moralistic writing has become in the genre.

And don't get me wrong I LOVE heavy political themes explored through fantasy setting, but most of mainstream fantasy authors drop the most widely understood concept into their story without any form of commentary or nuance.

The worst case of this is Daenerys plotline which can effectively be summarised into this:
