Maybe this is obviously canon already but I think Ponyboy is the type who would hide (or severely downplay) his illnesses or injuries, and the whole post-rumble concussion/fever wasn't just an isolated incident.

Obvi it could be a new thing he just started doing now that Darry’s in charge, but perhaps Pony was just always like this, even with their parents. Some kids hide that kind of stuff for no particular reason, and when you're already the quiet contemplative type like he is, it can be hard for others to notice when something's up unless he himself says something. If we wanna believe the part about him being a good liar, that would help him be sneaky about it too. I think their mom would’ve been good at sensing when he was unwell, but the skill comes less naturally to Darry and even Soda at times.

With their parents gone, Pony mostly does it bc he wants to avoid giving Darry one more thing to worry about and heaven forbid pay for, if he can help it. For a while he reasoned to himself that if anything was seriously, actually wrong, he’d just tell Soda who would tell Darry. Which meant he usually also avoided revealing his ailments to Soda, who would immediately tattle. And maybe at least a tiny fraction of it would be because he’s worried about looking uncool in front of his big bros+the gang.

And if Darry finds out because it's one of those times where something is seriously actually wrong, like Pony’s been walking around with a fractured wrist or strep throat for a week, he'd probably come off as annoyed, maybe downright frustrated when he demands to know what were you thinking, not telling me right away that something was wrong?

And Pony would be very frank with his answer, maybe in a way he’s only able to put into words right then and not even a moment before.

“I was scared you’d yell at me.”

Because that’s what it comes down to, doesn’t it? And Darry would have some reflecting to do (after getting Pony the care he needs of course). Because it knocks the wind out of him to think that Pony’s primary concern is Darry’s reaction and not his own wellbeing.

Unpopular opinion but Pony shouldn’t share his theme with any of the gang. He shouldn’t publish it either, at the end of it all I don’t think it’s something he intends to share with anyone aside from Mr. Syme.

It’s a grade but it’s also an organization of his thoughts— finally getting it all out and feeling through these emotions clearly for the first time. It’s something so incredibly intimate I can’t imagine showing his brothers let alone the world.

Now, this isn’t me saying he shouldn’t share any of his thoughts or emotions once he’s processed it. He can still talk with the gang or his brothers and work through stuff — they just don’t need to read the theme for these conversations to happen! They don’t need to know his exact thoughts in every moment to work it out, especially as it was all his initial first processing— the gang and his brothers, even Pony don’t normally operate on sharing that much. It’d be a heavy topic to start with! I think he’d simply “I’m getting better now.” It’s going to be a real long time before any of them can have a real conversation about that week… and that’s such a compelling part of it!

I’ve mentioned it before how I don’t see Ponyboy as an author— writing isn’t really his thing, he’s a reader, watcher and an artist. He draws or does watercolors— now, in the book he does express a desire for more people to hear out kids like Dallas, like Johnny. but to me it’s just that … a desire. A wish. Not a call to action/action he will take directly, The Outsiders is him still very much within all, it’s probably the first time he put all his thoughts in one place to begin to process it. Especially after his head injury. That’s nowhere near the amount of time to come away with an action plan— or idea to use his remedial school work as a tool. Ponyboy’s desire here towards the end is a part of the same ones he’s had since the beginning, that hope for something better and for tough looking, rough acting boys to be seen and considered too— that bid for humanization and hope. Not to say he couldn’t reach out and help troubled youth when he’s older but…

I hope this all makes sense this was supposed to be a little blurb and I just kept rambling. This isn’t even against the headcanon more how I see his headspace/intent. Honestly, I don’t think he ever looks at it again. Not to mention I don’t even think the gang know about it— or at least that it’s the topic that he chose, even Darry and Soda. Just that he started doing school work again.

Outsiders hot take: I don’t think anyone in the gang would actually benefit from reading ponyboys theme and it’s in his best interest to make sure they don’t

Ok so who’s going to the “far away from Tulsa: across the musical-verse” show tonight and how many of my firstborn children do I have to give you for the recording

One of the things that stood out to me on my most recent listen of the outsiders musical soundtrack is how the socs are so quick to try to point the blame at someone else and the greasers are quick to assume it themselves.

We see this in “Justice for Tulsa” when Cherry and Paul argue over how Bob died and Paul tells Cherry she shouldn’t have been near Ponyboy and Cherry tells Paul that he shouldn’t have been drinking and looking for trouble. And we see the flip side in songs like “Deaths at my Door”, where Ponyboy decides everything is his fault, and “Throwing in the Towel”, where Darry decides that he’s the one who’s messed up so badly that someone’s dead. This also appears in the bit right after “Soda’s Letter” when Johnny decides he’s going to turn himself in.

2 of the biggest exceptions/outliers to this that I’ve noticed are “sodas letter” where he decides to skip figuring out what happens all together and look toward what happens next— “pony, what’s been done is done/there’s only so far you can run” and in “Hopeless War” when Cherry realizes that blaming anyone isn’t going to fix everything that’s happened

Dare I say, part of this can be traced to the fact that the socs face very few repercussions for their actions throughout most of their lives, leading them to point fingers at who else could be responsible, and the greasers experience the opposite, leading them to often assume they’re to blame.
