“I don’t know…I’m a bit of a sucker for dark hair though.”
“It’s all about blondes, Marl. Unless you can find a guy with long, scruffy dark hair, then they’re exceptions. Short hair, no way.”
“C’mon then. Let’s go to the kitchens, maybe they’ll have something sweet too.” She stood hooking her elbow with her friend’s. She always tried to help her friends keep their sense of calm. “So aside from homework, how have you been?”
“Are you sure we’re allowed in there? There’s not some crazy rule where food is only restricted to once a day or somethign right?” Emma joked, or at least she thought she was joking. It wouldn’t surprise her if it actually was a rule. “I’ve been... fine.” She hesitated, her mind darting to her recent shenaniagsn with certain people and her decision on which side to be on. “How about you Andy?”
“But then you’d be missing the sweet sound of my voice, Em.”
“Then don’t ever say a guy is hot, when he was clearly not.”
“Sorry. I was just letting you know I was behind you. I didn’t mean any offence by it.”
“No, not you. The kid behind you. Did you not hear him? He thought it was funny to call you... never mind. Just don’t worry about it.”
“Say that again and I won’t hesitate to hex you, got it?"
As she moved herself away from him, basically causing more of a scene than before, Sirius shot a grin to the onlookers. Sirius followed anyway, not really struggling to keep up when he made it to the corridor. “Oh, come on, no need to be testy, Ems,” he called at her before reaching her side. “And I’m the dramatic one, eh?” Since they had hooked up, Sirius had made it a point to be a bit less brutal to her unlike he does for most of the Slytherin crew. Emma was close to Andy as well and being that Andy was his favorite cousin, he couldn’t be too harsh. Still, she was quick to pounce and Sirius knew all the right buttons to press to get her angry, it seemed.
“Don’t call me Ems.” She retaliated, not because she hated that nickname, but because it brought her back to the night of their hookup. It was a night the girl looked back in on shame because she knew the type of guy Sirius was with women; she didn’t usually like to become one of ‘them’. “I’m not dramatic, I just don’t like people following me when I clearly hinted I didn’t want them to.” Continuing down the hall, she noticed she wasn’t going to get rid of him anytime soon, so she turned and faced him, her eyes meeting his. “What do you propose we do then?”
Andromeda smiled at he younger girl. She knew that everyone was on edge lately, and she knew that her House was filled with pressure to chose the ‘right’ side. “Its fine. Maybe we should take a break? I’m struggling with mine as well. Maybe some tea would help.”
The one thing Emma loved about Andy was she always tried to make a positive spin out of everything. No matter what it was, she remained calm and nice, and Emma used to want to be like that. Now, she didn’t think that was going to get very far. “Sure, why not. I’m certainly not going to do anything more productive.”
“This isn’t the same school I left over the summer. I almost can’t believe it.”
“Well you better believe it, and maybe keep your voice down Professor.” Emma scanned the area around them before returning her eyes to the woman in front of her. “It’s also not the same freedom from over the summer.”
“I’ve heard so many different stories about what happened on the staircase I honestly don’t know what to believe, but you do have a point about the Whomping Willow. You’d have to be pretty stupid to go near that thing.”
Raising an eyebrow, Emma was aware she was talking to a halfblood. In Hogwarts these days it was as if everyone had a massive label stuck on their foreheads, just so you knew who you were talking to. Obviously Emma hardly judged people based on their blood but it was hard to do so when she was constantly worried someone would catch her being on one side or another side. She didn’t want to be on any side. “And you wouldn’t think ghosts would be able to cause so much havoc, considering they’re ghosts.”
“You’re doing it wrong,” Lucius rolled his eyes. He hadn’t even bothered with looking at Emma’s work, having instead chosen to continue glimpsing over the chapter he was reading. He enjoyed starting with Emma just as much as he liked talking to her. “Busy,” He paused to put the book down, purposefully taking his time in looking Emma over. “Yet you don’t look like you want to be working on any of that. You’re better off accepting the distraction before I decide to get worse.”
Furrowing her eyebrows, she couldn’t work out if he genuinely meant she was doing it wrong or if he was just messing with her. But he hadn’t even looked at her work, or did he? “Even if I was doing it wrong, I wouldn’t trust your tutoring.” She retaliated, before meeting his eyes. Darting her eyes around the room, she scanned for any reason to say she needed to stay, a professor or even a nerdy Ravenclaw she could bribe in tutoring her, but nothing attracted her. Instead, “it depends what you have in mind,” escaped her lips.
As Emma stood, there was no doubt in Sirius’ mind that he was going to follow Emma. He wasn’t actually going to get anything done in the library, no matter how much he was planning on it. It was a continuous cycle that never seemed to end. “Maybe,” he shrugged, as he stood, mimicking her. “Oh good, where are we going then?” he asked, loudly. With a reputation like Sirius’, he wouldn’t be surprised if their were rumors surrounding Emma and Sirius by the end of the day in Hogwarts. He was sure that the Slytherins would love that. “Don’t look now but there are more people staring,” he whispered, casually to Emma.
Trying to pretend his company was the last thing in the world she wanted, it comprised of Emma rolling her eyes and groaning lightly. “We are not going anywhere.” When he whispered to her, she couldn’t help but dart her eyes around the room where he was indeed correct. People were staring. This wasn’t good for her, and she couldn’t risk anyone finding out about their little hook up not too long ago. She was drunk, for sure, but she was sure the Death Eater’s wouldn’t care even if she had a wand to the head. “They’re staring because you’re being too loud.” If she stormed out now, she hoped that people would take that as ‘outcasting’ him, even if deep down she didn’t want to, but she had to. And that was exactly what she did.
“You should join me then. I make no promises, not to throw you off, though.”
“Not sure if that was a threat or a flirting technique.” She tilted her head a little before smirking slightly. “But I think I’ll stay away from the stairs thank you very much.”
“I can do anything I like, Vanity.” He rolled his eyes. “I’m smarter than you, always have been really.”
“Of course you would think that.” The girl muttered under a sigh, before resting her cheek on her clenched hand. “Clearly not that smart to be beaten up by a painting.”
Andromeda was sitting in the Common Room working on her Transfiguration essay, a task she wasn’t exactly excited about. It was one of her better subjects, but she hated writing essays.
Andromeda was staring into space, trying to find the perfect wording when she heard someone snap at her. “I do apologize, my dear Emma, but why did you yell?”
Emma never meant to snap as she was usually chill and calm with many situations, but these days her tension rose. The constant pressure of being on a side haunted her and it made her want to become distant from both sides. Why couldn’t she just be herself and be on her own side? “Oh sorry Andy, I just can’t seem to do this homework.” She lied, giving her best friend a small smile. “I didn’t mean to yell, are you alright?”
“Oh? Was I staring?” he shrugged, a playful smirk making it’s way onto his lips. From behind him, he heard someone shush him to be quiet. Of course they would. Sirius was not well-liked in the library because he typically was found doing anything but studying in there. Sirius’ eyes rolled up, peering at the ceiling, adding drama to his thinking process. Finally, he shook his head. “Not particularly, although I’m sure that annoying you in the process is just as well,” he grinned.
They always had a different relationship; ever since she first met him it was a bit of insult here and a bit of flirt there, combined together to create a love/hate relationship. Emma never had a true problem with him, it was just that his reputation threatened her position in the school, and considering she made no clear indication of which side she was on, hanging out with Sirius would confirm she was on the Order’s side, and she couldn’t have that type of label on her. Not yet anyway. Not until she was completely sure. “You know full well you were staring.” Being shushed in the library forced the snake to stand up and gather her books together. “Well, I’m not going to sit around and let you annoy me, as well as everyone else in the library.” Deep down she hoped he would follow her, a little bit of fun sure beat homework.
“Do you have any idea what’s going on around here?”
“It’s probably just people overreacting. I’m certain the two students that were thrown down the staircase were messing around and tripped, and people should know not to go near a tree with the name Whomping Willow.”
“The Whomping Willow too?”
“To be honest, it’s called the Whomping Willow for a reason. Was only a matter of time before it started going crazy.”
