“Woman” isn’t a scientific title, it’s something made up by humans to better understand experience. That’s why you don’t see scientific papers referring to people with XX chromosomes as women, they’re referred to as females.

The word’s etymology shows a lot more about the word. It comes from an old english word literally meaning “wife-person.” Now, I’m sure we can all agree that women are a lot more than their marital status, so trying to keep that definition is also not relevant.

The word woman didn’t come into existence until around 1200 CE. Before then, humans managed to live without that word for over 100,000 years. It has always been a word used to describe the specific experience that at the time meant being a wife and mother, but has now evolved to an identity people can cling onto whether for euphoria or comfort or whatever else.

I know I won’t change your mind, but here’s my answer to what a woman is: a woman is a person who experiences the specific feelings and trials associated with modern day understandings of womanhood, whether by biology, upbringing, or mental view of yourself
