One thing about downton abbey and Tom branson is that for the time period you'd think he'd be much more traditionally irish which isn't expressed at all hardly in the show
Especially considering his politics, It's very likely he spoke irish and I wish there was more incorporation of his culture (but the show is pretty racist (in the context of the era and in the context of British opinion on colonialism) to the irish so there is literally none of that
Would've been fun to see him be more traditional but I think that was beyond the writers lol. Imagine that scene where he drank that drugged drink and just slipped into irish instead that would have been good !!!
sorry to be annoying but it’s actually unlikely that tom, who’s from the east of ireland near dublin and two-ish generations removed from the great famine, would know very much irish due to all the brutal colonialism and genociding the british did in ireland in the 1840s.
now, he’s a revolutionary and he has a grandfather from the west who was likely not a native english speaker, so tom would probably know *some,* but as a distant second language rather than a first.
don’t worry though, julian fellowes is an anti-irish mfer in all sorts of other ways though!!
Hmmmm true yeah where he grew up def would do that... still I will dream hahaha
I could imagine his brother knowing more, he seems the type to go and learn lol
And YEAH WHAT THE HELL the writing always had me like ???? This show is racist as hell to the Irish and thwts not something you see every day anymore lmao
SO TRUE. i would also love if tom spoke irish! tom branson elsie hughes speaking different gaelic languages together solidarity, pls!!!
i do love the idea of his brother (older and old school and even more stubborn) speaking irish. oh well guess i’m spending today headcanon-ing tom’s entire family dynamic for several generations lmao
also RIGHT ???? not to mention the downright hateful way the show talks about india and the myriad other british colonies being super fucking oppressed at the time with even worse consequences lasting into today than even ireland!!! like yes the show is written by a tory and a lord but like DAMN it just goes full mask off sometimes. especially with tom’s plot basically being the family ‘civilizing’ him and i hate it so so so much lmao.
Exactly lol I'm native n I am just like wowwwww like the whole thing when lord Grantham lost his money in canadian rail I was like pffft literally like 40 years prior they were masacarring our people to make way for the railroads so I was like GOOD
Pure colonialism in that show
BUT it's fun and ya now i wanna come up with Tom's family lore!!! Why did he even come to England it's never explained!
SO TRUE. all the politics are awful but the vibes… the vibes are lots of fun.
like i get tom needing money and there being more opportunity in england. but like was he sending money home?? how big is his family?? what brought his much-older brother to liverpool??
RIGHT??? WTF IS he doing in YORKSHIRE. So weird !!!! I must write his lore now

Started watching downton abbey, Mary is so fucking unlikable and boring compared to the rest of the characters. Edith is way better
That being said I think Mary's main problem is that she should be a lesbian but for some stupid reason is not
really enjoyed downton abbey, however it is the most anti irish media ive seen from the 21st century and if Tom says "I came to downton as a chauffer-" 1 more time I'll implode
no offense but British Invasion bands singing about being from the American Deep South is so fucking funny, the furthest south you’ve ever been is Hastings
except for Eric Burdon who sings like he truly means it
Eric Burdon is a reincarnation of some old blues man from the deep south
