Oh no you mean the boys couldn't connect with a superhero movie where there are 3 superheroes but none of them are men? And two of them are not white and one is not even Christian. Oh I am shocked. Especially when the powerful antagonist is also not white male. You don't say. And the supporting roles have men but one is black and the other is Asian and rest are muslims?! So cruel!!! And even the lab tech minions are black and brown ?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There ARE MORE CATS THAN WHITE MAN?! I am shocked? Shocked that they hate it. Must be the bad acting of Oscar winning lead and critically acclaimed directors fumbling, can't be anything else. Am sure all the reviews are unbiased. So sad.

neither “that’s not canon” nor “fuck canon we made this all up” but a secret third thing (canon shouldn’t be taken as gospel but is useful as a reference point for building upon and recontextualizing characters and details. if you worship the source material as unchangeable then fandom in general probably isn’t for you. if you have complete disdain for the source material you would probably enjoy yourself more in a different fandom)

I was literally about to post a chapter once and got a snide comment similar to this - not addressing other readers, just me - and decided to keep the rest of the story to myself. It's still there. I could post it anytime. But I'm not going to.

I also got a glowing compliment on a fic and went into a flurry of writing, suddenly inspired, then by happenstance got a nasty, impatient comment on that same fic a few days and moved onto writing a different fic that didn't have that associated annoyance.

Like. I am writing for fun. For me. I reread and enjoy my fics all the time because they're exactly the story I want to read. I get the same enjoyment out of a fic wither or not anyone else ever sees it or knows it exists.

I'm sharing it for fun too.

I once got a comment on a fic that just read RIP with my username. It's really fucking demotivating. Maybe the work will end up abandoned, maybe it won't, but don't fucking leave this sort of shit on a fic. It's more likely to prevent any future updates than encourage them. Authors are not vending machines. You can not shake us and force the story out (believe us, many of us have tried doing this to ourselves because we want to finish the story but sometimes life and other shit gets in the way).

Fanfiction is so fucking wild sometimes. Like, you'll go from a fic where someone's just 'I put all my favourite tropes in this because NO ONE CAN STOP ME' to 'Look, guys, it's 10k of pure porn, I have no regrets' to 'I wrote this to process the grief of losing my mother' and it's all so different. And people just group it all together like it's all the same. And it is, but it isn't. And it's kind of beautiful.
