Q: I wanna know everything about studying and living and Korea, i don’t have a clear question hahaha so i would like you to tell me about your experience, if you don’t mind.
A: My experience, I must say it has really been great. To be honest I didn’t find it hard to adjust to the environment here because I looked up tons and tons of facts from different sources, about the culture here and I think it really helped.
At first, I thought I was going to have trouble with food (because it’s so spicy) but in the end I got so used to it and I like it a lot now. I really love Korean food and I think that even the pickiest person will find something they will enjoy eating. I also really like people here. They know how to have fun but they are also hardworking. I loved when they would recommend me a place to visit and we would go there together. I feel like this is how you can experience the culture to the fullest.
I cannot get enough of how cute they dress>.< it’s different from what I’ve ever seen but it looks good on them. The way of spending time here is also different. Instead of staying in one restaurant or café for a longer period of time you go to more places like to a karaoke or to eat dessert after. I think it’s much more fun but also more expensive. Drinking culture is also a lot more fun here. They have a lot of drinking games and tricks.
There are so many amazing places to visit and unfortunately, I didn’t visit many and I didn’t really travel. But I think I’m going to come back in a year or two and hopefully I will have more money to visit all these great places^^
Q: My biggest anxiety is about making friends! I don’t know a lot of Korean and I get lonely quite easily so I wondered how you deal with that and also with making friends with the Korean students as well as the exchange students.
A: I can definitely relate to anxiety that comes with making new friends. But worry not! Making friends here is easier then it looks. Especially since every exchange student here is also looking for friends. If you’ll be staying in the dorm you will constantly see people on campus, who take same lecture(s) as you, so what I like to do is to start a conversation about the class (“Hey! We’re taking the same class right?”) and go from there like talking about home country or your major. And it’s mostly smooth sailing from there.
As for Korean students; every school has a variety of clubs you can join (from all kinds of sport clubs to art club) and usually Korean students go there to socialise and make friends. They might not all speak English but they will try as best as they can. I noticed that i have a much harder time making Korean friends. They are much more shy then international students and if you are only taking classes in English, which I’m sure you will, you won’t be seeing them in class as well. Learning Korean will help a whole lot with this. They get so amazed if you can speak Korean that all the shyness will be forgotten. And i think it just makes them more comfortable around you^.^ If you don’t want to speak in Korean at leas use VERY easy English (slow) so they won’t be intimidated. And also note that if you want to keep in touch with someone, text them every so often so that they don’t forget you :P
Ps: Know that it’s not all up to you. Other people will approach you as well so don’t stress too much😊
Q: There is something maybe should not matter to me but it does worry me a bit and it is the issue of racism. I have been told that Koreans, not all of them, are quite xenophobic and racist, I am dark skinned and that’s something that causes me a little fear.
A: Well in my opinion it’s more about the behaviour then just race. They tend to look at you weird if you are loud or disrespectful. If you act like they do you’ll blend in just fine^.^(A woman even once asked me if i’m Korean - and mind that i’m not at all Asian looking) There will always be some people who stare or make comments but just try to ignore those people if they bother you. And I never felt like they were trying to be hurtful or anything (i heard so many comments on how white my skin is but i know they are just trying to compliment me). Keep in mind that they might just not know any better and don’t take it personal.
