2: "Most of you already know that the hourglass symbol on Spidey's chest is the actual marking on a black widow spider. We debated keeping it: the hourglass could also represent "time" as in "the future" and in "2099." But in the interest of clarity and simplicity, it was dropped."

4: "At left (in this edit, at right), Carl Pott's drawing, done at an early 2099 developmental meeting, demonstrates how the webbing on Spidey's back enables him to fly and also looks dramatic as heck as a "cape" of sorts." "Below (in this edit, left), an even earlier concept drawing penciled by John Romita and inked by Steve Geiger. John wrestled with the idea of adding the suggestion of a mandible to Spidey's hood, but the resultant "antlers" made the bullpen say stuff like, "Hey, Spidey, watch me pull a rabbit out of a hat!"
