you dont have to be a parent to understand the horror of walking into a room to discover that the baby crawled out of his crib and onto that pottery wheel you forgot to turn off, and while the baby is spinning around and around, the dog is sitting there all calm, like a person, gently using his paws to fashion the babys soft cartilage head into something a little more modern.  it might be the classic tale of bad parenting, but lets see where the dog is going with this

Drifter Ophelia sketches (and Valkyr).

And some disjointed character thoughts I had while doodling.

I was thinking I wanted Ophelia to have like...stray cat rizz; sort of aloof and scrappy, and equally soppy and miserable. 'I can fix her' but fixing her involves wrapping her in a towel and force feeding her wet food until she loves you.

Which...I think might still be in play. Almost literally. I have an image of a skinny, malnourished, thousand-yard-stare Drifter arriving in 1999 ready to fucking fight and instead learning the power of friendship.

Some aggressively touch-starved, unintentionally cold person who hasn't actually realised they could do with some love. The second she does the world becomes almost overwhelmingly bright, isolates herself externally and internally because 'surely something's wrong here' it's too much like Duviri. The feelings aren't real.

She works it out. The Hex are stubborn.

To the others she's 98% just a normal - if slightly out-of-touch - person who needs updating on current popular culture. But every so often someone will catch her out of the corner of their eye and she's...not herself. For a heartbeat her expression is unsettling. In the darkest depths of the night, standing out on the balcony staving off a nightmare, she doesn't appear entirely...there?

She's a menace; playful to the point of danger when she's in a Frame. The Hex? She borrows them with intense care. Her chosen favourites from her arsenal? They all reflect her daredevil nature and ferocity so wrecking shop in them is easy.

She's an absolutely void for love. Once she works it all out she couldn't possibly be happier. Everything she gets she can give back. There's no drive to be besties with everyone, but if the energy is there she's gunna feed it. Maybe to the point of mirroring that person before letting her guards down properly.

I think, of all things, 1999 was good for her.

I just love the super realistic historical shows where they show how filthy and disease ridden the era is by having every nameless peasant look like they rolled in mud right before filming while every noble has three layers of painstaking makeup on to create the illusion that they’re just naturally flawless. Sure we know what it was really like, but clearly only the filthy poors ever had to deal with that kind of thing while the elites of society have always been pictures of beauty and health. No one ever used urine in beauty treatments or got the pox or had a particularly unflattering jaw from years of inbreeding cause everyone would rather fuck their cousins than anyone even slightly below their “station”. Because hey, being realistic is great, praise us for our gritty realism in showing how disgusting the poor are- I mean were, but it’s just too much to ask our viewers to consider them actual people. That’s why we focus on nobles, who definitely all fit into modern beauty standards at all times and in all places.
