I think the og set of photos⬇️really captures the vibes of Hollanov's wedding, the "I don't care how, I just want to marry you" so here's another redraw!
PS. Ilya is eating with a fork just because I wanted to refrence him devouring that pasta in ep.6
🔥🔥 hole
Once he accepts the reality of it Shane literally loves being in love— You can talk to me about anything. You can talk to me in Russian, I want to make you feel better. Come to my front door. Come to my cottage. Let me figure out a plan to keep you. We’ll figure something else out, okay?
@cypresstrees yessss and if I might add, despite some fan theories about Shane’s mental state in TLG he’s actually canonically kind of on cloud nine. Because he loves being with Ilya. Loves their relationship, loves making him happy, and even loves that they’re keeping this giant secret from the world together. It’s not just a sex thing, I think Shane really likes like them against the world, alone as a pair. Even though this is an important friction point between them I think that we always attribute Shane not wanting to be out to his internalized homophobia and shame, but sometimes I wonder if it’s also just that the dynamic itself, this you and me against the world thing, doesn’t just push all of Shane’s buttons.
I think that is definitelyyyyy part of it for Shane. But I also think Shane's fear and anxiety about the world discovering his relationship is still overshadowing his reactions in his tension with Ilya. He's on cloud nine when he's with Ilya or planning his life with Ilya or otherwise feeling Ilya's presence in his life, but there's still a weight, and I think part of TLG is about Shane realizing how much the weight is weighing him and Ilya down -- the turning point for him, after the almost plane crash, is him realizing he wants it to be him and Ilya against the world for everybody to see. There's a line in that sequence in TLG that kills me: "Shane would have died too. Alone, and secretly, and for the rest of his life."
Like you said, a big thing that does it for Shane is that he and Ilya are alone together at the top. And now they're alone together at the top in the most intimate way, and he fucking loves that. He loves being a unit with Ilya, he's basically pavlov-d into that. That's a big part of his character. But to me his biggest character development in TLG is realizing that he wants the chance to be "you and me against the rest of the world" with Ilya in public.
For sure, this is a great breakdown of all sides of his character journey in TLG. The last line especially “you and me against the world with Ilya in public,” is really important. And I don’t think Shane is a perfectly happy character, not even close, but I’ve been trying to really sit with his characterization in TLG and not put darkness on him that isn’t actually there.
Thinking of the line during the proposal where Ilya asks “is this because I almost died?” And Shane responds with “no, it’s because I almost died.” Shane isn’t a long-term planner, he lives aggressively in the moment. The only time he plans for the future in a big way is the end of HR and the proposal in TLG. He has hopes for the future for sure (retire his jersey in Montreal, marry Ilya and start a family) but he’s not thinking of ways he’s going to preserve that vision beyond carrying on as they are now until a magical time when they “can be together, for real.” When Ilya thinks about coming out, he thinks about Shane meeting his team and being out in their current reality, when Shane thinks of coming out, he can’t visualize it as clearly. He longs for it, but doesn’t see it as a possible right now, so why yearn? But the plane emergency opens his eyes to the future and makes him see clearly.
Shane doesn’t brood. He’s a man of action. He doesn’t see the way out of the closet for them until he’s faced with the reality that living in secret limits what they can be to each other. And he wants to be everything with Ilya. It’s really a love conquers all story, with love overriding Shane’s fear.
(which, if you read breakdowns of romance novel form like I do lol, it’s usually at the heart of the story somewhere. Crucially- love doesn’t conquer Ilya’s depression, which I appreciate, but that’s a different meta)
Which brings me to what we really see on the page. I really hope the show fleshes out Shane’s side of things more, because while I don’t think Shane is an angsty character, I think there could be more lip-service paid to the reasons behind his fear. Shane doesn’t spell them out in TLG, but I think a botched coming out to the Metros is the perfect impetus for him to enact this “just keep swimming” protocol where as long as he and Ilya carry on as they are everything will work out. Like, Shane has character development, but we’re missing the inciting event, at least on the page, to me.
Once he accepts the reality of it Shane literally loves being in love— You can talk to me about anything. You can talk to me in Russian, I want to make you feel better. Come to my front door. Come to my cottage. Let me figure out a plan to keep you. We’ll figure something else out, okay?
when shane realizes that their relationship is exclusive now he becomes the happiest man alive
"so where do you want me?" is a crazy line delivery. not to mention the way shane follows the movement of ilya’s head cause he’s in trance and so drunk in love
I love this little detail that when Shane gets closer to Ilya's heart, his hand slowly and unintentionally crawls to his cross, and the moment his finger almost touches it Ilya leans back, distancing himself. It is such a tiny moment that you can overlook especially since you're focused on the gentle forehead kiss, but I believe it is so symbolic for them.
he ran after him btw. he noticed him leaving and followed him.
late as always but happy pride! Pretty sure I fucked up Ilya's face, I'll fix it before I print this
eeeeeelya
some light summer reading for shane - don’t mind his reading choices

Rumors circulate that princess of pop Liliya Rozanova is dating PWHL Victoire captain Jane Hollander after recent Instagram post. Link.
Ilya’s favorite place to be.
I think about this parallel more than I should. First time, and First time after saying I love you. ❤️
