Today is the 11th anniversary of the Urumqi massacre. A peaceful demonstration in response to the killing and unfair treatment of Uyghur people by the Han Chinese people turned into a riot and a massacre. The protest was repressed by the Chinese government, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds and thousands of people. a brutal crackdown on the Uyghur people followed these events and thousands of Uyghur people all around the country were killed or disappeared When it all happened, I was in Germany, far away from home and worrying sick about my relatives. I didn’t have any contact with them in the months that followed; I did not know whether my relatives were involved or if they were still alive. In 2012, I returned to my hometown and listened to the horrors that the government inflicted to my people. My cousins and friends told me the horrible things that they had witnessed. They told me how men and women were killed on the streets, how they were humiliated and raped, how they were so scared of going out because Uyghur people were being arrested on sight. How mothers demonstrated in order to keep their children safe. How there are still thousands of people missing. This happened in 2009. And now 11 years later, I am again worrying about whether my relatives are still alive. Now 11 years later, there are concentration camps in my country, in which my people are systematically exploited and killed. The Chinese government is killing an entire ethnicity. So please, can we talk about this, too?
