spanish corpuses

here are some corpuses you all can use in spanish, whether you are looking for example sentences for flashcards or regional uses of words or even when words started to pick up speed.

CORDE (Corpus Diacrónico del Español): texts from the beginnings of the language to 1974

CREA (Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual): the successor to CORDE, from 1975 onwards

CORPES (Corpus del Español del Siglo XXI): a 21st century corpus! this one is fairly new compared to crea so check them both out!

Tesoro lexicográfico del español de Puerto Rico: sources from PR, great for finding words just used there

CAES (Corpus de aprendices de español): this one is really cool because it's a corpus of texts produced by learners from a1 to c1

CORDIAM (Corpus Diacrónico y Diatópico del Español de América): just for spanish spoken in the americas

CORPHA (Corpus del Habla del Ecuador): for ecuadorian spanish

El corpus del español: this one is pretty big and very general, but requires you to open an account, so i haven't used it personally. but i'm mentioning it here for its size!

neutral pronouns in Portuguese (br)

if you're learning Portuguese and want to use neutral pronouns, well — officially we don't have them but— irl we're starting to use elu/elus.

ela > she

ele > he

elu > they (singular)

elas > they (feminine)

eles > they (masculine)

elus > they (neutral)

the best way to "neutralize" a sentence, since everything "has a gender" in Portuguese is to use synonyms and choose words that don't have gender variation, if it's not possible, grammatically we use masculine to "neutralize" or you can use neo language again

bonito > bonite (handsome/beautiful)

aluno > alune (student)

engraçado > engraçade (funny)

if you're insecure about when to use "u" or "e", well, basically

if the words in the masculine form ends with "o" you change to "e", and if it ends with "e" you changes to "u"

amado > amade

ele > elu

Today I’d like to look at numbers. Irish has quite a few counting systems. The numbers change slightly whether you’re counting people or years, which is fairly complicated, but today we’re only going to look at cardinal numbers 1-10, because today we’re taking it easy! 0 a náid 1 a haon 2 a dó

10 a deich Here’s a pronunciation video I suggest you learn to say these by heart, as quickly as you can, from the top, from the bottom,from the middle, upside down, you learn to say your phone number or your address. It’s quite useful! Luckily, Irish is not as ridiculous with the numbers as other languages, so even as you’re counting onwards, they’re all decimal and they make sense (I’m looking at you, French and Welsh). Euphemisms for dying in Portuguese

Bater as botas - Literally “hit the boots”. I’m not sure what is the best translation for this

Dormir o sono dos justos - “to sleep the sleep of the righteous” 

Comer o capim pela raiz - “to eat the grass by the root” 

Vestir o paletó de madeira - “to dress the wooden suit/coat” 

Esticar as canelas - “to stretch the legs” 

Partiu dessa para melhor - “[he/she] went from this to a better [place]”

Ways to say someone died:

Morrer - the verb “to die”

Falecer - also means “to die” but it’s a more delicate way of saying it. It’s used kind of like “passed away”, it sounds a bit more respectful, so it’s the verb you would use for a loved one dying.

Vir a óbito - this expression is more medical and it’s also common to hear/read in the news/newspaper.

Someone who’s “trying to teach Our Father to the priest” is someone who’s trying to teach something to someone who’s already an expert - NOT “preaching to the choir.”

Vigário is another name for a priest (the Portuguese word for “vicar”)

Langblr Activation Challenge-Week1

Hi all! I really want to try and get back into this community and back into studying, so here is my introduction post for week 1 :)

So, my name is Nathan! I am 22 years old and a native English speaker.

 I speak Spanish as well, but I really need to brush up on it and reconnect with that knowledge. I want to get back into studying Italian and Latin for the time being. I may start with just one until I get back into it, and then do both or more. I’d like to get back into French, German, and Portuguese eventually.

In addition to studying languages (in theory at least), I also am very interested in music and culture! In the fall, I am going back to school for a degree in Music History and Literature. I already have two degrees, one in Psychology, and the other in Criminal Justice, but my real passion lies in music. I also did a minor in linguistics where my concentration was in grammar! In the future, I want to be a university professor teaching music history, or something related to music and culture. Additionally, I want to do research about how music is a binding force in terms of group identity, or how folk music is used to create a cohesive cultural/group identity.

Other hobbies that I have are listening to all kinds of music, playing video games, biking, and reading. I just started working at a gym, so I hope to get into running because I do enjoy that too! I also love talking to people, so if you feel like chatting, I am always down to make some friends :)

Langblr Activation Challenge

The langblr community is rather dead. What can we do about it? Maybe another langblr challenge would inspire people to keep the community alive? Let’s give it a try.  This challenge is called Langblr Activation Challenge and I really hope as many people as possible will join! The challenge consists of 5 tasks you have to do, one task per week. The tag for the challenge is #langblractivationchallenge, please use it if participating! 

The tasks

Week 1: Write an introduction post. Even if you have made one before and everyone knows you already. Tell us who you are, what your native language is, what other languages you speak, what languages you’re studying, what other hobbies/interests you have, etc. Let’s get to know each other a bit!  Week 2: Promote other langblrs. You can promote your favourite langblrs, the langblrs you’re following, the langblrs following you, or just random langblrs you find in the polyglot/languages/langblr/etc. tags. This is a great opportunity to find and help others find new langblrs to follow. Week 3: Join a langblr group chat/discord server. They are great for getting to know other people in the community and practicing your target languages. If joining a group chat/discord server sounds too overwhelming and/or intimidating, just send a message to some other langblr.   Week 4: Make some original langblr content. It can be anything: a vocabulary list, grammar explanation, resource list, list of songs/movies/books in your native/target language(s), a song with translation/vocabulary list of the lyrics, “questions for langblrs”, langblr challenge, picture of your language books/notes, tips to learn a language/languages in general, etc. Don’t forget to tag it with tags such as #polyglot #languages #langblr to make sure as many people as possible see it! Week 5: Participate in another langblr challenge! You can find some challenges here. If none of them spark your interest, make your own challenge! Langblr challenges are a great way to improve your language skills and keep the community alive.

… أَنَا أَسْكُن فِي [ʾanāʾaskun fī…] - I live in… … أَنَا أَسْكُن مَعَ [ʾanāʾaskun maʿa…] - I live with…  مَن هٰذَا/هٰذِهِ؟ [man hāḏā/hāḏihī?] - Who is this? … هٰذَا/هٰذِهِ [hāḏā/hāḏihī…] - This is… Grammar • There are two grammatical genders in Arabic, masculine and feminine. • There are two main categories of words which are feminine: female people (woman, girl, mother, daughter, etc.) and singular words that end in tāʼ marbūṭah. • There are a small number of feminine words that do not fall into either of these categories, often words connected with the natural world. • In general you can presume the word is masculine unless it falls into one of the categories above. • If we take a noun and add ـي (-ī) to the end, it then refers to ‘my…’  • Iḍāfah is an Arabic grammatical structure mostly used to indicate possession. It basically entails putting one noun after another: the second noun specifies more precisely the nature of the first noun. The construction is typically equivalent to the English construction “(noun) of (noun)”. • When the first noun in iḍāfah ends in tāʼ marbūṭah or when an ending such as -ī is added, you should ‘untie’ the tāʼ and pronounce it as -at.

Wheelock’s Latin Chapter 1

So for Christmas, I got Wheelock’s Latin 7th edition and the accompanying workbook and I’ve been trying to get myself to work in it. Since I like to try and put out content that I’ve typed up for my own learning, here are my notes for the first chapter of the textbook, the blank workbook questions, as well as the answers that I came up with. Tuesday December 3rd

Music

I practiced for about an hour today. I did all my major scales, and ran through Cavatine a few times. For tomorrow, I need to work on some high note exercises, as well as breaking the piece into sections. 

Did this game to help recognize tenor clef. Its pretty fun and its actually working for me. You can pick from multiple different clefs and even have to guess more than one at a time. Highly recommend.
