I accidentally did a Wikipedia binge about 1st wave feminism and fashion and stumbled upon the 1890s bicycle suit. Do people know about this? Why didn't anyone tell me about this? This is dope as hell.

And speaking of Sophia Tolstoy, her diaries are just so depressing. 

“I am to gratify his pleasure and nurse his child, I am a piece of household furniture, I am a woman. I try to suppress all human feelings. When the machine is working properly it heats the milk, knits a blanket, makes little requests and bustles about trying not to think […].“

She wrote this when she was 19, one year into her marriage to Leo and as she was pregnant with the first of his 13 children.

A few years later, when she was 25 or so:

“I am so often alone with my thoughts that the need to write in my diary comes quite naturally … Now I am well again and not pregnant—it terrifies me how often I have been in that condition. He said that for him being young meant “I can achieve anything”. For me […] reason tells me that there is nothing I either want or can do beyond nursing, eating, drinking, sleeping, and loving and caring for my husband and babies, all of which I know is happiness of a kind, but why do I feel so woeful all the time, and weep as I did yesterday? I am writing this now with the pleasantly exciting sense that nobody will ever read it, so I can be quite frank with myself […].“

During her 12th pregnancy she wrote about taking scalding baths and jumping from high pieces of furniture to try and miscarry.  And at one point while reading her husband’s diary (which he told her to read) she found the sentence “There is no such thing as love, only the physical need for intercourse and the practical need for a life companion.” In her own diary she wrote “They ebb and flow like waves, these times when I realise how lonely I am and want only to cry…”

A few years before her husband’s death, she published a cycle of prose poems titled “Groans”, under the pseudonym “A Tired Woman”.

The Mandalorian switched from writing a story following the arc of Ice Age (2002) to writing a story following the arc of Shazam (2019) in-between seasons 2 and 3, and this is why a perfectly satisfying ending to a two season miniseries got ruined.

This brings to mind a theory I've had for a while

I think The Mandalorian was originally intended to end at season 2

Think about it, at the end of s2, everything's pretty much wrapped up, the main goal of the series has been accomplished, Grogu's with a Jedi, the show's main villain is beaten, there's set up for sequels/spin-offs with Boba Fett, Ahsoka, Bo-Katan, or Luke, and the only hanging plot thread-"rightful" ownership of the darksaber-was only introduced in the final episode (and also changed the prior rules of darksaber so that now you're only the "rightful" owner if you win it in combat), almost like it was a last minute addition to the episode...

And that brings me to the production side of things, mandalorian had a second season greenlit well before the premiere of the first, enough so that production of s2 started before the s1 premiere and wrapped a little after the s1 finale, enough time to get feedback on the show, for executives to greenlight more seasons, and to make last minute changes to the s2 finale/originally intended series finale that leaves a plot thread hanging as a hook for s3

Basically I think mandalorian was originally a show written with a clear ending in mind that would be accomplished in 2 seasons, prior to premier the crew had no feedback from audiences on the show and thusly they needed to be able to bring the show to an end point soon in case they didn't get more seasons

And then comes the problem

The show was a massive hit people wanted a lot more, but audiences and executives (and maybe also the people making the show, its a little unclear) wanted the s1/2 status quo, a status quo that was changed by s2's ending, and so the undid it, status quo returned, the characters are regressed, and the spin off show the devoted at least 2 episodes of s2 to setting up has 2.5 of its episodes stolen restore mandos status quo

Yes, for sure, I think Mandalorian was originally written as a two-season miniseries (with a reasonable ending for that first season as well just in case obviously) that basically follows the same general emotional plot beats of Ice Age (lone wolf character finds stranded child that needs to be brought back to its true family and builds up bonds/connections to other people along the way and will always ultimately have to let the child go but the mc has healed and grown as a result of the journey).

And then it got really popular, Grogu in PARTICULAR was really popular, but they already had this two season Ice Age arc written out so instead of finding a way to change that from the beginning of season two or just allowing Mandalorian to come to its natural ending, they switched narratives after season two in the stolen episodes of TBOBF to make it into a Shazam narrative (child is clinging desperately to romanticized fantasy idea of its "real" family but ultimately recognizes that that isn't the true path for them and they should go back to the found family they had already built meaningful connections with), which undoes the satisfying Ice Age ending. It takes it from being DIN'S narrative to trying to make it GROGU'S narrative, despite not seeing any real change to Grogu at all over the first two seasons of the show because Grogu's development does not and has never mattered.

But Grogu's a cash cow that they're going to milk until it's completely dried up, so.
