thinking of you
Sparrow is Theresa's biggest victory if you think about it.
They are so beholden to her, so loyal that even when they should hate her, should buck and fiight and bite against her will they just...don't.
Lucien implies that Theresa influenced his actions, Theresa all but tossed them away when she gained the Spire, because of how they were raised and how their anger was fostered and they were encouraged to work nonstop towards a single goal they end the game alone.
But when Theresa calls and tells them their child is destined to save Albion, that they must give life to the child who will preserve Albion for generations to come, they don't even question it.
They prepare for it, set up a place that will have and hold everything their child will need, lead Albion into a golden age, not only peacewise but with knowledge in setting up the Academy. They plan for it, prepare Walter for it. Even the things they do that could be argued as rebeling against Theresa (hiding away their guild seal; the sanctuary seemingly being inaccessible to Theresa) they do in a way that ultimately benefits her cause and use for their children.
Theresa doesn't have this same control of HOBW or Logan, thats why her manipulations are different, she lies directly too them instead of around them, theres no webs built around them as there is with Sparrow. HOBW can be angry at Theresa, has no real loyalty to her, only to those they consider Allies, and she is not one of them. Sparrow cannot be defiant in such a way, they've been built and raised in such away that when Theresa calls they listen.
All in all; Theresa should just be a mild annoyance to Reaver. Not something hes focused on enough to build an entire secret society that hates her, she was a momentary inconvenience that he can easily move on from like he does everything else.
You know who she isn't a mild annoyance too? A momentary inconvenience? Someone that should hate and resent her?
Sparrow. Sparrows been burned by her worse than anyone else in fable 2, and yet they stay loyal to her and do as she leads them too. She shaped their entire life into what it is, and yet there is little more than small acts of rebellion against her.
Reaver holds that anger instead, Reaver spreads the word in secret, and holds onto the dogs collar, and hates her in their place.
I raise you: ASPD Sparrow and NPD HoBW
---
Sparrow, who deals with chronic feelings of emptiness, using their heroic potential to pursue their all-consuming goal of vengeance. Anger being the only emotion that comes easy to them, and is easy to let drive/justify their actions. Heroics also being their only means of feeling connected to the world, and to those around them, so they use it as a crutch. Admiration and being involved with other's affairs offering a path of least resistance towards success, stimulation, and opportunity, so they keep going back to social interactions. Struggling intensely with knowing their limits, being concerned with others beyond gain, and following a standard not dictated by personal preference. Losing restraint and regard whenever conflict appears, easily believing the ends justify the means (What is the point of mercy when there are greater things to pursue?). Always alone, always on the fringes, fighting for themself and what little material things they have -- be it a goal, an alliance, or personal enjoyment. They were hurt their entire life, they have nothing, and they'll cling to whatever motivation drives them. It's also easy to relentlessly pursue vengeance when you hold little regard for anything else. Relationships still exist, and abandonment still cuts deep, but their ability to truly connect with others feels... Lacking. Always second to their goal of vengeance. It takes effort to go out of their way and pursue benevolence for the sake of others, but it is possible to justify it. They can do good deeds to ensure a greater goal, pursue material gain, build a reputation, maintain what they care about, etc. If it makes sense to them, and if they feel it's important, they're more than capable of acting against it's destruction.
I truly believe that by having them devoid of empathy in a "relatable" sense, having them struggle with selfish impulses, and having them exist as a social outsider strengthens their character. Adds some reasoning as to why they behave the way they do in gameplay, with players being able to pursue malicious actions for the fun of it, and some prompted expressions being very impulsive/disruptive. Sparrow is also generally very unexpressive, and their shown relationships are very... Shallow. I know it's all a gameplay flexibility thing, or limited by 2008 game depth, but I like justifying it. Also. Having someone with ASPD go out of their way to be seen as heroic and benevolent is a very compelling narrative for a "good" Sparrow. Shows they're willing to pursue a greater good, while still maintaining a lot of their moral greyness. No demonization of a complicated disorder in this house.

I feel that the HoBW could also deal with very similar limitations of empathy, regard for others, and ability to connect, but to a lesser degree. Mainly because they're shown to be very driven by strong emotions and involvement with others. Their struggle with coming into themself as a hero seems to be driven by wanting success, capability, and importance -- gained through their reputation and actions within the rebellion. There's also the factor of them being made to feel powerless, insignificant, and betrayed by Logan (who I also see as having NPD, to a much much unhealthier degree), which triggers their rage and need for action. I do feel, at their core, they want to prove that they are a greater leader than him. It just depends on how you play that decides that.
The HoBW's first moments of empowerment are them choosing how they treat others with their position of power (dominance or benevolence). Using the rebellion as a means of reassuring their superiority to Logan, someone who they harbor deep resentment towards. Feeling as though they will make a better leader than he would. Being unable to understand his point of view or concerns, up until the threat of something greater than him appears. All the connections and alliances they foster being dependent on them proving themself and their capability, which does wonders for reassuring their self-worth. Finding fulfilment in seeing that what they do matters, as they prove their importance as a hero. Relentlessly pursuing action, promises, and influence to feel significance. And, once they finally come into a position of power, they can choose to selfishly pursue their own wants, or continue to foster their promises of improvement. Deciding what their importance to others, and their role as a hero, means. Having to go out of their way to truly believe in the causes and concerns of others, once they no longer hold any weight over them. Finding fulfillment in being able to shape other's lives, and rise to the challenge where other's could not. They wanted to be a hero, and they'll continue to do whatever they can to reaffirm that they are one. Through power, through respect, through reputation, and through their efforts -- shaped by if they value dominance or benevolence.
As with Sparrow, this adds some reasoning as to why they feel the impulse to do the most domineering and selfish social interactions. But idk, being raised by/sharing a mentality with the guy who believes authoritarianism is the answer to everything might've influenced how they navigate gaining social importance. I think that by giving the HoBW the same disorder as their brother, it really becomes apparent how they can either continue the cycle of violence, or work to end it. Love playing into the existing themes.

I dislike the perception of "canon" vs "not canon" behavior. I like to believe that the Fable protagonists are capable of all moral routes, and that those seeds of their personality exist no matter what. It just depends on if they choose to act on them, and why they feel the impulse to do them in the first place.
I'm also personally fond of reaffirming the idea that constructive and self-corrective behavior is possible for anyone living with personality disorders. Yes, even those without the capacity for empathy can come to understand others, build an ethical compass, and pursue good.
And to top it off, this grants a stronger tie to other heroes within the series. Theresa, notably, displays a lot of ASPD characteristics that explain why she's willing to go to the lengths she does to justify a goal that makes sense to her, and reaffirm her own position of authority. Having her manipulate those who are similarly blind to things outside of themself -- Lucien, Sparrow, Reaver, Logan, the HoBW -- is a delicious bit of moral greyness to her. And Reaver (i dont even need to day he has aspd we all know he does)! Always the amoral mirror to the hero (at least, in Fable 2 and Fable 3), a display of all they could become, should they disregard everything but their own desire. The unhealthiest of the unhealthiest.
In short; the heroes all have some kind of cluster b disorder, yes it's generational, and yes they're all problematic but that's not an end-all-be-all
Albion was saved by these guys?
its like phantom of the opera if it was good
I have surprisingly been getting messages from people asking whether I'd do a post about my design notes for the deadly seven sins. Alright then, here goes;
Design Notes; The Seven Deadly Sins
Greed points at everything they want and grasps anything they can. Their true form is unseen. Their own hand partially blinds them. Different eyes puncture their crown, stolen from others. They float, detached from all. Their stick is sharpened at both ends
It is the first and oldest design, dating back to 2023
The stick sharpened at both ends is a reference to Lord of the Flies (in the book, one end of the stick goes into the earth while the other holds a severed head) I wanted it to symbolize violence
Sloth exists in a wrapped cloth that provides comfort but muffles all sensations. Sloth doesnt see, speak nor hear. The cloth overwhelms them. They are bound by a rope whose edge reaches inside their confinement, giving them the ability to free themselves if so desired.
I made an extra effort to put the rope within Sloth's control, to avoid associating inertion from mental illness to laziness
I wrapped my Blajah plushie with a bed sheet and used my robe's belt as rope to get a picture reference for the upper body. Despite eerie origins, my designs come into paper with a lot of silly methods.
Pride exists inside a golden, hollow statue. Their gaze is set upon a cracked book of pages set in stone. Their laurel crown is sharpened to the point of horns. Pride can be set free if they break the outer shell that binds them with the gavel they use to condemn others.
The pose and clothing is a reference to the painting The School of Athens, by Raphael.
Being mettalic, the book only reflects back themselves. Even if you interpret it as stone, it would still work since the pages remain static
I like to imagine the rotten legs dragging their heavy statue shell around. Ever since I was little I have a strange fear of statues moving
Gluttony is a stomach, living and consuming themselves within their confinment. They’re not represented by an underweight or overweight person; it had to be something everyone has. Their scale is purposefully unspecified; because everyones is different.
The design resembles the Horseman of Famine because gluttony and famine are connected; the excessive hoarding by some people causes famine to others. They're like two different plates on a scale
While the basic representation is just fat, I never considered drawing an underweight person to counter it and appear subversive. When talking to a friend recovering from an eating disorder they mentioned how cheap and uncomfortable it is when people use extreme thinness just for the sake of horror and I have to agree. I always avoid drawing real bodies for horror
Lust is the only one who tries to disguise itself with a human appearance, tho it has too many hands. One hand to beckon, one to threaten, and one to silence you. It kneels because not all of its victims are adults. It lives undercover and invites you in as well
Many asked about the fourth hand: it's the one you only notice afterwards and are left wondering what it means, whether it's an innocent gesture or not. How it made you feel.
It has 2 other variation designs. While what I made before is beautiful, it is not unsettling enough. It has the artstlye of an angel rather than something human and dangerous
I settled on the design after a passage in the book Second-Hand Time, by Svetlana Alexievitch. It was a passage about a teen abused by a military squad, killed when she got pregnant, and mocked over how underveloped her body was. Because of that my original idea was to have Lust wearing military boots, but that would restrict the concept too much. I thought that drawing would make that passage less haunting to me, but to no avail.
Envy is a slowly burning and constricted heart. It covers its identity with a mirror; the more it seeks to resemble the reflection of others the less it will resemble itself. But even the reflection is broken, inaccurate, and unsatisfactory.
Many have said the concept looks like a chrysalis or a flower bud, unable to flourish. I like when people interpret my drawings, they often find beautiful meanings that escaped me
I pondered whether to paint the mirror in front of them black, to symbolize phone screens, but decided against it because it would blend into the background
Least popular design but one where people have told me ''I cant stop thinking about it'' the most, which made me cherish it a lot
Wrath is not a beast acting ravenous, but a human thing slowly crawling towards you. All of their actions are justified by the halo they claim to be righteous. The closer they get, the more they shed their humane appearance
It was a challenge to make wrath differ from someone being rightfully angry. It applies to all designs; how to portray dangerous excess to very common and not entirely wrong emotions.
Wrath has no legs. Nothing to stand on
''Little by little, it turned into that wild fury in which the eyes camouflage with a black veil, the fists contract with a tremedous force and your very teeth find the enemy'' Roughly translated quote by Nikolai Gumilev that I kept in mind while designing it. Amazing writer
That is all I can remember at the moment. Hopefully it saciates everyone's curiosity and not ruin the magic and mystery. Thank you very much for your interest. I will see you soon, when it's time for the Seven Heavenly Virtues
have we considered the possibility of aromantic bisexual sparrow
Scarlet Robe, Theresa, and the HoOV are Scottish, Sparrow is Romanichal, and Logan and the HoBW are the two very opposite ends of what happens when the family ties get disconnected and they move up into a new social class
Logan's prime example of the "well I never grew up like that, that's not me, I'm WHITE" mentality. See how Logan canonically giving no fucks towards the Dwellers and Sparrow's old family. This man refuses to be seen in any way that undermines his authority, which also means he's adamantly removing himself from any inklings of his heritage. Paranoid authoritarianism makes for the best self-centered ignorance. Maybe it's just me, but I firmly hold onto the idea that he spent his whole life living in the privileged environment we see him in. I do think he was more grounded when he was younger and into travel, but ever since he got his power he reeeeeaaally subscribed to some strict ideals.
HoBW? Left home, boots on the ground, connecting with everyone and anyone who's living in a variety of circumstances in Albion. Was definitely very privileged+out of touch early on, and took a lot of effort to gain some humility and stop going "just because I grew up in the castle doesn't mean we're not the same!", but they eventually become really chill. Factor in their deep admiration of Sparrow, could see it being a way for them to reconnect with their roots. Can even go out of their way to preserve Sparrow's old home and help out what remains of their old band. Type of person who can look at where their parent came from and be like "YUUUP, THAT'S ME. Without them I wouldn't be where I am today💯‼️". They value others experiences and how everything contributes to how things are now, as seen with their style of rebellion and leadership, so they probably value their roots as well. Sparrow will always be That Guy™ to them, so I can 100% see them going out of their way to try and feel closer to them.
HC:
I simply love the idea of Reaver being the father of Logan and the prince/princess in Fable 3.
Even if he isn’t the father he would still see in them the late Hero Queen, a woman that he came to love many years ago.
What's your take on Garth x Lucien 🧍♀️ I thought about this once and love that ship now but I've seen only one person say they agreed with it
stopped during the final fight to take a pic of hammer
I am quite fond of dysfunctional and abusive siblings dynamics
i forgot Most people are not always in the state of cowering in the corner like a scared dog. y’all just be doing stuff
