There were only few people that impressed Caterina in the way that Niccolò did. Upon hearing his statement, the smile stayed on her lips. “I have always admired this goal. And I hope you know, that we can talk about whatever you want. So tell me: How can such a grand thing be achieved?” 

When it came to such things, the hopes and dreams of his country, he could never stop himself from talking and so Machiavelli was happy for the change of subject and her willingness to converse with him. “Through our separation Italy was turned into a play ball for those around us. Spain, France, the Emperor... They use our city states to increase their own power. We must unify to stop such from happening. Many disagree with me on that point though, I fear campanilismo will always be too strong.”

       “You must be Wilhelm”, the foreign name seems strange on his tongue and after all the thoughts and assumptions of the last weeks Machiavelli could not muster up a smile. “Tell me, how is trade with Venezia going? I do hope our friends are in spirits as good as ours.”

A reluctant snort, before Alessandro spoke. “Is this supposed to be an apology? If so, I don’t want it, Niccolò. Leave Rome, leave me and leave Cesare. Then we may all live in peace again.”

“There is nothing I need to apologise for, Cardinal Farnese” His voice was firm, yet Niccolò did not wish to scold the other, for he saw the reason behind the words thrown at him. “I cannot leave Rome, for I am doing the work of my republic here.”

The sweetest of smiles stains her lips but at the low title given, she scoffed loudly. Grin turned to a smirk, one brow pulling upwards. “Mary of York,” she introduces with a brief nod of her head, “sister of the Queen.”

He remembered too late and Machiavelli could only pray that his words would turn this situation around so his first week at court would not end in a diplomatic disaster. “Then I must apologise even more, your highness. It was a terrible mistake that lead me to your quarters and I shall not steal any of your time.”

“Am I?”, she asked playfully, looking at Niccolò in the dim light of the candles. “Well, I have always trusted your judgement and therefore I won’t argue about that. But I believe that your future will be just as bright, my friend.”

“I do feel as if I should argue about that, at least a little. Greatness is not what I desire. I simply wish to help in making my country great, for the people that live in it, for mankind even.” He stopped himself before his words trailed off into a different direction. “But you do not wish to talk about politics, do you?”

Machiavelli is played by Damian Lewis in the 2013 BBC radio play The Prince written by Jonathan Myerson. Together with his defence attorney Lucrezia Borgia (Helen McCrory), he presents examples from history to the devil to support his political theories and appeal his sentence in Hell.

I am back. I am still as busy as I used to be and will probably fail at juggling drafts and work, but I am here and in love with my trash son Nicci as much as I used to. While I am currently watching the third season of Borgia my love has even grown, so I am back to researching and interacting. Let me know if you wish to plot something while I dust of Nicci’s hundreds of book shelves.

“Lately our beautiful republic seems to men of the church like flies.” Interest and rejection mix in his tone as Machiavelli scrutinizes the man in front of him. A Borgia. Much has he heard about this family, not enough truths were hidden in those whispers it seems.

“Please be so kind and tell, cardinal, what brings you to Florence?”

She pouted a little but then her lips curved into a smile as he kissed her hand .“how gentle and caring you are somtimes takes my breath away ” she whispered before lightly kissing his cheek

“Tomorrow I am speanding a full hour with you .even if I am forced to sit in that uncomfy chair and wait for you until midnight ” bella giggled pointing at the chair in the corner that she hated .

He returned the smile that was given him, but stopped himself from leaning into a kiss. If he indulged in her presence now there was no going back, and Machiavelli was still aware of his duties. They had to come first, for her sake.

He shook his head at her threat. “I am looking forward to that hour, my dear. And maybe, if I work hard enough we can spend even more time together. But these papers...” His voice thinned out as Machiavelli wondered whether or not he should burden her with such news. “They are important for the state...”

“But am I not a responsibility too . Am I not worth five short minuets of your time ” bella giggled before sitting upon the desk slightly not enough to disturb he’s papers.

“ I guess I’ll just go and have a cup of tea all by myself ” she whined dramatically in the hopes he’d take pity on her

He did his best to not let out the sigh forming inside his throat. It would make her angry, or even worse: It would make her sad. He dearly wished he had the time to give her all the attention she deserved, but the truth was different.

“My dear, you know I would throw all this away and spend the rest of the year just with you, but I cannot. You are not a responsibility, Bella, you are the reason I am here.”

He reached forward, grabbing her hand to bring it to his lips and kiss. She looked beautiful perched on top of all this boring papers...

Receiving a fright by the sudden entrance into empty room, Mary gasped. The dainty goblet nestled between long fingers juggled in her hands before she caught it again, lest it fall and shatter.

“Oh, no, it’s quite fine. You are new to court, are you not?”

He tries to save the situation with a warm smile, aware though that charisma has never been his strongest trait. Knowledge however is a sword he knows to wield well and Machiavelli searches his mind to remember who the woman in front of him is before he bows deeply.

“Yes I am, Niccolò Machiavelli at your service, my lady.”
