is a take that fundamentally misunderstands both Luke as a character and the entire point behind Star Wars and the Jedi religion.

Luke didn't act out of attachment. If he did he would have killed Palpatine and Vader in a desperate attempt to save his friends.

Let's actually compare this to mister attachment aka Anakin, shall we.

If Anakin was in a position where some guy (for example Dooku) was responsible for Padmé, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Rex etc. being in current life threatening danger, he would have killed that man and anyone who stood in his way. If there was another guy claiming to be his father that might have thrown him off for a bit but in pure rage and terror of what might happen to the people he loves he would have 10000% killed him, father or not (he literally tries to kill his surrogate father / brother out of attachment and greed and later succeeds IN THE MOVIES).

Luke however chooses AGAINST acting out of attachment. He doesn't let his fear for his loved ones control him. The literal moment he crashes out and eventually almost kills Vader is when Vader mentions Leia. His attachment to her led him to react with rage in a desperate attempt to protect her but then he realizes that that's WRONG. That he's playing into Palpatine's hands and giving himself over to the dark side, so he stops. He chooses not to become what Anakin let himself be turned into.

Luke's motivation for saving Vader is not attachment - it's compassion.

Attachment is to act on behalf of yourself. Attachment is choosing your own feelings over what the people you love would want. Attachment is sacrificing everything your wife stood for, choking her to unconsciousness because she doesn't react the way you want her to and trying to kill your own brother out of greed and jealousy. Attachment is selfish love - love that is about YOU and not the people around you.

Compassion is SELFESS love. Compassion is choosing others over yourself. Compassion is valuing the ideals and wants of the people you love - not just wanting to keep them by your side at all cost. Compassion is tossing away your lightsaber and letting yourself get tortured and almost killed because you REFUSE to act out of attachment and let anyone be hurt but yourself. Compassion is also to sacrifice yourself to save your child even though it gains you neither a better future nor him staying in your life.

Luke's compassion motivated Anakin to act out of compassion as well. That's what the movie is about, guys.

dude i don't normally like to dig at peoples fun i generally think people having fun is good but it is slightly disheartening when there's a really really good story about a strong platonic relationship and then the only thing the fans can do is ship the characters or worse make a crack ship with an unrelated character from another media because it's like they can't STAND a lack of romance in media like they absolutely must try to insert romance where it is absolutely not needed or relevant and honestly sours the story/media a lot more for me or they'll Die because they can't just be happy with a really good platonic relationship. it makes me very sad as a demiromantic girlie.

Given that Solo: A Star Wars Story features a droid liberation activist who's very obviously characterised as a mean-spirited parody of a women's rights activist and whose concerns are consistently treated as misguided and laughable (before they blow her up and use her brain to repair a spaceship), I'm not sure it's that the writers can't decide so much as it that they don't want to say what they really think out loud.

One thing that really stuck out to me in the book Glass Abyss was that Mace Windu is written thinking of and treating (some of) the droids he encounters like people. And as a person who is firmly in the "machines are lower than animals in the moral community" camp, I had to stop for a moment, squint at the words on the page and then challenge the way I thought about droids (at least in the context of this this story) to be able to continue the story without being weirded out every time an interaction like this happens.

Now i dont think in this case the author was offering any commentary about droids, just using them as characters, but hmm isnt it crazy how fiction can be used to validate or challenge the internally held beliefs of the reader.

The way a significant portion of Star Wars fandom seems to have concluded that Jedi not having romantic relationships means that they don’t have friends, don’t care for one another, and possibly even deserved to be genocided, is really demoralizing as an aromantic person.

It honestly feels like a lot of those people would completely fail to accept that aromantic people exist and that we can have meaningful (non-romantic) relationships with others.

Meet Kleebo! I’m going to need a Jedi to play for a ttrpg I’m working on with some friends, and I’ve wanted to come up with a Rodian oc forEVER.

He was born somewhere around ~80 BBY. I’m still working on his whole deal, but his two closest friends and clan mates were older than him and both ended up reassigned to two different branches of the Service Corps. He stated in contact with them and was relieved that they both seemed happy and fulfilled. While he dreamed of being a padawan and traveling the galaxy, he was never a top student and didn’t expect to pass his initiate trials.

By the will of the Force (a literal miracle), Bo had a year of academic and athletic improvement and ended up passing his initiate trials, much to the surprise and delight of his instructors. He was chosen as a padawan, but his first mission was a disaster. His new master was badly injured, and, embarrassed and frustrated by how poorly Bo handled the stress, terminated the apprenticeship. I haven’t worked out the details of what actually happened, but another Jedi who was in the same sector came to their aid and transported them back to Coruscant. That Jedi was Thame Cerulian, and he ended up taking Bo on as his apprentice.
