Charithra Chandran defenders sending anti-arab racist slurs to my Egyptian friend because she spoke about the orientalism behind the casting of Vivi Nefertari. Mind you this person is a poc.
Where are the people who defend the casting of charithra as an Egyptian princess ? Do you condemn the people of your fandom ?
Criticism towards this orientalist casting is not racism. The mena community deserves accurate representation.
Ngl while the random racists throwing anti black slurs at Charitha Chandran is inexcusable the actors coming out with statements seem like a carefully curated PR strategy to distract from the ACTUAL issue of Vivi not being played by a middle eastern actress & the very real pattern of South Asians being conflated for Mena actors. Vivi is NOT supposed to be south Asian, never has!
This is extremely slimy & comments being mysteriously scrubbed on the Instagram page when trying to call them out makes this whole situation seem extremely calculating. The comment censorship has not only happened to me, but several other fans who have discussed it with me privately.

And second of all, it's Oda's story, his characters, his cast. What right do you have to complain? Because you're a fan?? If you were a true fan, you would've respected his decision, you hypocrites.
Oda has officially confirmed that he chose her himself because he thought she was perfect for the role. But some are saying that he didn't have much choice and Netflix forced him, and he obviously can't be open with this. Yeah, and you know it how? Then, by this logic, I can also say that oda had imagined her as dark-skinned, but toei animation deliberately animated her as white. If you think oda was forced by Netflix, then can't it also be the same with toei animation.
(Though I know that oda made her white in the manga and therefore toei animation can't have influence in it.)
It's all just baseless speculation.
Maybe Oda made her white at first but later wanted to change her to skin to dark. It's also possible. Moreover, Alabasta is inspired by Egypt and Southern Asia, where most people are dark skinned, for your information.
Another thing to all those calling her "black." First, go get yourself educated, man. She's an Indian with dark brown skin, not black. If your eyes can't see it, then get them checked from a doctor first.
Whatever the case, I love white Vivi in the anime, and I also respect Oda's decision to cast her as dark skinned in the live action. I'm sure she'll definitely live to her role as I've heard she's a great actress.
Vivi is based on ancient Egyptian royalty she wears Arab clothes and her kingdom is based on Egypt not India. The casting is outrageous and people have the right to call it out.
Let's be clear the architecture that inspired alabasta in one piece is actually Arab Syrian not Indian.
No because I'm seeing people on social media claiming that the architecture of Alabasta is Indian because of the Taj Mahal to justify the casting of the indian actress charithra Chandran as Vivi Nefertari.
Taj Mahal was built by the Muslim Mughals who took many inspirations from the Arab Umayyads and the Arab abbasids. This type of architecture was invented by the Syrian Arabs and can be found in Andalusia in Spain that doesn't make it Spanish. By this logic we could claim that alabasta is inspired by Spanish culture and that the casting of a white Spanish woman as an Egyptian character is justified.
I had to make this post because I couldn't believe the level of misinformation and the cultural appropriation of Arabs on social media even on liberal spaces and by poc at that. Anyone participating in this masquerade should feel ashamed of themselves. Especially during a genocide and the recent killing of a Saudi student in the UK by white supremacists. Charithra D. Chandran is too poised to say it so I will: It's fucking pathetic to think that this casting is wrong because she should have been "lighter". Nefertari D. Vivi is a woman of color and her casting should reflect that. If you want to criticize anything, criticize the fact that Oda thinks India and Egypt are interchangeable.
