Job Post - Backend / Platform Software Engineer, Oslo
Backend / Platform Software Engineer
As he was making coffee, about two years ago, our current CTO was hijacked by the then Your.MD’s CEO and founder –‘What do you know about online health?’ He told him the little he knew. Later that day a brand new health startup was founded in Oslo, with a newly appointed CTO. In the following year, Your.MD launched both an Android and an iOS App, and collected millions of health-related queries.
To do that, the tech team built a distributed infrastructure based on Elasticsearch and Zookeeper using Tornado, using parameter optimization and support vector machines for ranking. At the same time, the company got in agreements with the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) for using their data and content, and with Samsung for distributing the app on their devices.
With two offices, in London and Oslo, and a workforce spanning five different nationalities, Your.MD has successfully closed a significant round of funding and it is moving forward – fast. In a sentence, we are creating the best personal health assistant in the world. We will give access to basic healthcare, to everyone, for free.
We are now reshaping our back-end infrastructure into a distributed operating system, able to broker real time requests between atomic services, with no single point of failure at scale. We need people able to have a vision of the whole project, keen to build software with the whole team, for the whole team.
Above everything, you will work on building an infrastructure able to scale, both in terms of users and features. You might contribute to the design and development of the platform which stores and serves user data, or the one which stores all medical corpora, or a different one – but you are expected to contribute in analysis and design of requirements for any new component.
To do that, you will work close to people as different as Your.MD doctors or natural language processing experts, and you must be able to understand the needs of the component they are developing.
You are a backend superstar – you are able to architect, design and implement features at scale
You have a proven experience in scalable, distributed systems, e.g. you have experience in developing applications using Amazon AWS, but you have also extensively used Thrift, Hbase, or other projects of the Hadoop ecosystem
You have hands on experience in designing web-scale real-time system
You write well designed, testable, efficient code
You don’t need to be told which programming languages we might require, nor which operating system we work on
You don’t push into dev, but make a pull request
You maintain an open-source project which proves straight away that you write well designed, testable, efficient code
Enjoy great wine and good food

Your.MD, the smart personal health assistant
Founded in Oslo, Norway in 2013 by a group of philanthropists and successful entrepreneurs, Your.MD aims to help the world be a healthier place for everyone by developing mobile services based on intelligent health data. The first service is an artificial intelligence symptom checker already available on Android and iOS devices.
Most national health services are crumbling under the weight of increased population, longer life expectancy and widespread health issues like diabetes, obesity and in some countries, sadly, war. Healthcare services are costing government enormous amounts of money. On the other hand, patients are receiving worsening healthcare almost everywhere. Mobile technology is seen as one of the most effective ways to address the problem.
Most 'frontline' doctors or nurses are not well equipped at dealing with the surging number of patients. This is due to low staffing, high costs and sometimes lower-than-optimal education. On average, given a sufficient number of 'inputs', a computer can better diagnose a person's condition. A recent study from Indiana University has shown that Artificial Intelligence provides 50% better outcomes for patients at less than 50% of the costs.
Our personal health assistant aims to become significantly more accurate than most general doctors in order to help people find out what's wrong with them without having to visit a hospital or the local surgery (unless they really need to).
Your.MD operates between Oslo (tech) and London (commercial) and it’s growing very fast.
We have a very flexible way of working and we put each team member’s personal work-life balance at the centre of our ethos. The team is very strong and extremely skilled, so you have the opportunity to work with ‘some of the best’ out there, a great opportunity to dramatically strengthen your own skills and experience.
We have global ambitions as we believe our technology can improve the life of anyone with a smart phone, anywhere in the world.
