Headcanon #4
But no one ever really talks about Octavian's parents. Heck, no one even knows Octavian's last name. Nobody ever talks about where Octavian got the motovation to hate Greeks from. Surely it didn't just come out of nowhere. What if Octavian got his hatred toward Greeks from his parents? What if they made it stick in his mind that Greeks were the opposite of Romans? That Greeks were savage beasts, while Romans were honorable soldiers? What if Octavian hated on the Graeci because he was only taught to do so, and his parents would despise him as much as the Greeks if he were to side with them? What if Octavian was so loved and pampered by his parents because he so openly spoke out about Greeks, and Octavian didn't want to seem to betray them by telling them that he didn't think the Greeks were all too bad, after he met the latter? What if Octavian's hatred was just mirroring his parents'? I mean, kids often have the same political views as their parents, but when they become Teenagers, they often develop their own views. What if that happened with Octavian, but he couldn't make that choice, because his family was so avid on their opinions on Greeks, and he loved his family and didn't want to get disowned, or ruin things between them? What if Octavian couldn't find a good venting source, so that's why he's so angry all the time, from bottling things up from his parents? What if Octavian felt horrible about himself, because he had a crush on Rachel Dare, and he knew his parents would never approve of him loving her, and they just wanted him to marry a good legion girl? What if, because of his low self-esteem, he tried to make himself seem like okay by being even more loud and angry, because then maybe it'd become true, and he would feel better, more confident? What if by the time Octavian died in BoO, his parents had seen the error of their ways, that hating people because of what happened with their forefathers was never going to lead to good in the world? What if they were going to apologize to him, because they'd been horrible parents that refused to let Octavian be anything more than what they wanted him to be, when they heard that their only son that tried so hard to please them was dead? What if his parents felt guilty, because they never got to meet the true Octavian, and now he'd probably be condemmed to Eternal Punishment because of their pressure on him to be the perfect, traditional son? What if Octavian wasn't really all that bad, and he was just trying to be a good son to his parents?
