"what exactly am I asking for, again?" I asked, looking up Mr. Clarke's number in the phone book
"how to build a sensory deprivation tank," Dustin repeated
"if you know what this is, why don't you just ask him?"
"because I'm pretty sure there's some law that a student can't call their current teacher."
"yeah, well, I had Mr. Clarke awhile ago so-."
"yeah, but he's not your current teacher, so shut up and dial his number."
I flipped Dustin off while taking the phone off its stand. I pressed ten buttons, reciting Mr. Clarke's number from memory
The phone rang for a few seconds before Mr. Clarke answered. "Hello?"
"hello, is this Mr. Clarke?"
"yes, it is, who exactly is this?" The rest of the group had gathered around
"this is Heather Henderson, I had your class about four years ago?"
"oh, yes, you're Dustin Henderson's older sister?"
"his favorite!" I said, a smile breaking through. "I'm sorry, I know it's late, but I have a burning question, and I don't feel super comfortable asking my current science teacher."
"listen, heather, I'd love to help, but it's 10:00 on a Saturday night-"
"do you know how to build a sensory deprivation tank?"
"a- a what? Sensory deprivation tank?"
"what exactly is this for?"
I paused, carefully lying. "Fun."
"ok, um, while I'm glad you are curious about science, why don't we pick this up later? Say, after school on monday
"you always used to say we should never stop being curious, to always open any curiosity door we find." I continued, ignoring Mr. Clarke saying my name. "Why are you keeping this curiosity door locked?"
There was a slight pause in action. Everyone was holding their breaths, waiting for my reaction. I covered the phone and whispered, "I need a pen and a paper."
Jonathan ran off, grabbing the said items as I sat at the table. Jonathan set the items down while I listened intently
"uh-huh," I muttered, writing something down. "Uh-huh, how much? Uh-huh. Yep, all right. Yeah, we'll be careful. Definitely all right, Mr. Clarke. Yeah, Dustin we'll see you monday. Bye bye"
I hung up the phone, before Hopper spoke. "What did Mr. Clarke say that we need?"
I turned to Joyce and asked, "do you still have that kiddie pool we bobbed for apples in?"
"I think so, yeah," Joyce answered, looking to Jonathan for support
"good. Then we just need salt. Lots of salt."
"how much is 'lots'?" Hop asked
I checked the notes before boldly turning up to the crew and boldly stated. "1,500 pounds."
"well, where are we gonna get that much salt?" Nancy questioned
"I hate this place," I muttered, walking through the ginormous double doors that led to Hawkins middle school
"at least you're out of here," Dustin snapped, rolling the pool across the tiled hallway
"exactly. Which is why I shouldn't be here." Jonathan and Hopper had gone out to the shed and grab the salt, Nancy and Mike went to grab the hoses, and Joyce's helping eleven find supplies, leaving Dustin, Lucas, and I to set up the pool
"can you guys shut up for five minutes?" Lucas scolded, leading us into the gym. "We have bigger problems to worry about."
"you are the bigger problem." I replied
"it's so heavy." Dustin complained, rolling the plastic to the middle of the gym.
"You're just weak." I say, unraveling the ropes securing the pool and spreading it out
"it's upside down." Dustin stated. We flipped the pool, creating more confusion
"no, this way." Lucas corrected, flipping it back over
We all pulled the edges of the pool up, trying to keep it stable, but the sides kept falling in
"how does this even work?" Dustin muttered
"try this side," Lucas instructed
Dustin swore under his breath, earning himself a smack. "What was that for!?"
"you're too young to be swearing," I scolded
"you were like twelve when you started cussing?"
"seven, actually." Then advised, "we need to pull the sides back."
We all went on opposite sides, doing as I instructed. It took a couple of tries, but we finally got the pool standing on it's own
"that took way too long," I said, wiping a hand across my forehead. "Especially for a girl I don't even like. Good thing I was here though."
Dustin and Lucas glared at me about to argue. "That was a joke."
"yeah, I'm sure it was." Dustin snapped
Nancy and Mike came into the gym, a few rolls of hoses behind them. I grabbed one of them and went with Nancy to connect the other. We flipped the switches, waiting for further instruction
"I think you were right, heather."
"I thought Steve was- different." Nancy huffed
I looked at Nancy, before I softly spoke. "Hey, it's not your fault, just gotta learn the hard way, ya know?"
"yeah, but I still want to be with him, it's just-."
"nance, if you still want to be with him. Even through the shit he pulled-." I huffed. "Just, be careful, nance. Seriously, Steve's not a good guy, but I know how it feels to be blinded by love."
Nancy softly smiled at me
"colder!" Lucas shouted. Nancy grabbed one of the knobs and spun it
"I'm sorry that you got involved into this," Nancy apologized
"don't be, I'm glad I did. Now that bitchy Nicole girl can shut the fuck up along with carol and tommy."
"warmer!" Lucas screamed. I grabbed the other knob and turned it on full blast, hopefully satisfying lucas
"right there!" Lucas interrupted
Nancy and I quietly laughed as we went back to the party. Jonathan and Hopper had appeared with bags and bags of salt, patiently waiting for the water to right. They took pocket knives, tore the bags, and dumped the salt in.
A few bags in, Dustin dropped an egg into the water, we all waited around, anxious for the results. The egg settled at the bottom. the party left out of defeated sigh, as Jonathan and Hop got back to work, pouring more salt in
Almost all the salt was gone before Dustin did another egg test. Almost scared, he carefully placed the egg on the surface, holding it before letting it go. It stayed on the top as we all laughed in relief
Joyce and eleven joined us, bringing a teacher's desk with them. Mike propped his radio on the top, turning the static all the way up
Eleven slipped off her socks and Mike's watch, I rolled my eyes at them. Joyce handed her some goggles wrapped in tape. The girl slipped it over her head, taking a deep breath
Joyce and Hopper guided her into the pool, only letting go of her hands when she was too far away. She sat down before floating on her back
A second or two later she was situated, the lights violently flickered before burning out entirely. The only light came from the windows, but it was enough. We could still see everything going on
Eleven's head slowly moved around, almost like she was looking at us one by one. I grabbed Nancy's and Dustin's hand. Nancy held on with equal intensity while Dustin appeared weirded out. I ignored him and focused on the girl
"Barb?" She muttered. "Barbara?"
Nancy and I, our interest piqued, leaned forward, impatiently waiting for eleven's next move. Her breathing gradually became heavier and slower, like she was about to go to sleep
"what's happening?" I breathed. Nancy squeezed my hand in reply
Eleven's breathing suddenly sped up, the electricity moving just as quickly. The lights flicked back on, brighter than I'd ever seen them, then went out completely
"what's going on?" Nancy asked, looking to Mike for an answer
"I don't know." He admitted, looking just as lost as the rest of us
"is barb okay?" Nancy asked, leaning over the sides of the pool. "Is she okay?"
"what's going on eleven?" I questioned, reaching forward to grab her hand
"gone." Eleven muttered. "Gone."
No, no, she must've seen someone else. Or something else. Maybe she just didn't remember what barb looked like, and her brain was just piercing something together
Something warm and wet slid down my cheek, but I quickly rubbed it off. Barb wasn't gone. She couldn't be gone. Something else was going on
"it's ok, it's ok, it's ok," Joyce shushed, reaching forward to caress the girl
"Gone. Gone!" Eleven shrieked
"it's ok, were right here," Joyce cooed, grabbing the girl's arms and bringing her back to the edge. Hopper gripped her other arm. "Were right here, honey, it's ok. I got you. Don't be afraid. I'm right here with you. It's ok. It's ok, you're safe. You're ok, honey"
As eleven had calmed down, Nancy slumped back, stooping over. I moved my hand to her back, still sitting up so I could clearly see everything going on
"castle Byers." She muttered. I pushed down my thoughts about barb and leaned forward, trying to get a better look at the action. Nancy followed soon. "Will?"
Joyce gasped while I held my breath, waiting for her to say "gone." But it never came
"you- you tell him... Tell him I'm coming," Joyce pleaded, her grip around the girl tightening. "Mom is coming
Through the static, the quiet voice of will cut through. "Hurry!"
"ok, listen, you tell him t-to stay where he's at. We're coming, ok? We're coming honey."
Another voice appeared on the radio, but instead of Will, it was of someone whimpering. Confused, I looked at the girl, waiting for a reaction. She shot up out of the water, throwing the goggles off and breathing heavily
"oh, ok, ok." Joyce muttered, pulling the girl in her grasp. "I've got you. It's ok, I've got you."
Blood began to pour from the girl's nose, sending a wave of concern through me. I looked at Dustin for an answer, but he shook his head and mouthed that's normal
"I've got you honey, you did so good." Eleven began to cry, creating a domino effect. I wanted to cry, but I just had to hold it in a little longer. Just a little bit. And then, I was going to have one of the best cries in my entire life
Eleven was pulled from the pool and had a towel wrapped around her. She sat on the bleachers with the party surrounding her. Hopper was interrogating Jonathan and Joyce, leaving Nancy and I with nothing to do
"let's take a walk" I advised. Nancy only nodded
We went out the gym doors and down the hall a little bit, stopping at the wall with the tiger mural. I alid down against the wall, pressing my hands to my temples. Nancy sat right next to me, bringing her knees to her chest
"I can't believe it," she muttered
"I know," I agreed, the whole situation finally starting to sink in
That was it. That was the final straw. Hearing those two words right next to each other. I swallowed down the lump in my throat as my blurry eyes focused on the multi colored tile
"y-yeah, I know." I choked
"what more could I have done?"
I turned and looked at Nancy, raising an eyebrow. "Nancy, it's not your fault."
"It is, heather. You were right. If I wasn't messing with harrington, barb would be alive."
"Nancy." My voice cracked. "Forget what I said those days, I was just mad cause you're with my enemy, it's- it's over." I say shaking my head. "She's dead."
"i- I'm sorry heather, for everything. Steve, the fights, everything. I'm sorry." Nancy choked
"it's okay, nance." I say rubbing her shoulder. "No need to apologize if I already forgive you." I say smiling
Nancy was going to say something, but we both noticed Jonathan turn to our hall. He sat on the other side of Nancy, his face full of sympathy. But before he could offer any, Nancy advised, "we have to go back to the station."
Jonathan and I turned to her, both questioning, "what?"
"Joyce and Hopper are just walking in there like bait," she reminded. "That thing is still there. And we can't just sit here and let it get them, too. We can't."
Jonathan thought about it for a second, then nodded, "so you still wanna try it out?"
"I wanna finish what we started. I want to kill it."
"that's something I would love to do," I smiled, rubbing a tear sliding down. "Let's kill this son of a bitch, once and for all."
"listen, if anyone, and I mean anyone, tries to hurt you guys, fight back like hell," I ordered, my hands resting on Dustin's and Lucas's shoulders. "I don't care if you break some guy's arm, do whatever you need to keep yourselves safe."
"where exactly are you older kids going?" Mike questioned, his arm wrapped around eleven's shoulder
"were just going to buy Joyce and Hopper some time, that's all," I answered, looking at Mike and eleven being closed to each other. "Stay here until Hopper gets back." I gave them each a quick hug before rejoining nancy and Jonathan
"everybody ready to go?" Jonathan asked. When no one objected, he led us out to his car
"lets fucking do this." I answered
Jonathan sped out of the parking lot and to the police station, not bothering to follow very many road signs
When we pulled into the parking lot, the sudden thought crossed my mind: "how are we going to get the stuff?"
"thankfully, Nancy and I already came up with that. While she's distracting flo, us two are gonna sneak in and grab the boxes, ok?"
"copy that." I agreed. We all exited the vehicle with Jonathan and I waiting outside
Nancy walked in and started up a conversation with flo. When they disappeared from view, Jonathan and I snuck inside, heading down the hall to Hopper's office. Jonathan grabbed his pocket knife and opened the door, granting us entry
"wow, that actually took a second." I mocked. The boxes were sitting on his desk, ready for the taking. I grabbed a few while Jonathan grabbed the others before heading out
Just as we were about to round the corner, I could hear talking in the main room. I stopped, hoping Jonathan wouldn't jump into me. He was observant and instead stood next to me
"well, I guess it's not her," Nancy sighed, her footsteps heading towards the front door. "Thanks for your help anyway"
"it was no problem, sweetie. I hope you find your keychain!" Flo said. The door opened before slamming shut again. A relieved sigh came from flo as her footsteps headed our way
"hoppers office." I breathed, turning around and tiptoeing without checking on Jonathan. Thankfully, he got the message and was right behind me. We rounded into his office and stealthily locked the door
"now what?" Jonathan sighed, his voice just a little softer than normal. The window caught my attention, an idea already starting to form
"well. well. well." I say creeping over to the window and found the lock, quietly swinging the glass open. Jonathan crawled out first and grabbed the boxes from me, patently waiting for me to join him. I jumped out and took a few boxes trying to hurry to Jonathan's car
Instead of popping them into the trunk, we threw them in the backseat for easy access
My hands were stretched across them, making sure they didn't topple over
"someone needs to work on her distraction skills," I mocked as Jonathan sped to the byers house
"I thought you two were done," she defended. "Plus, it sounded like flo was getting annoyed with me, so I had to wrap it up."
"we just needed ten more seconds."
"no, you didn't. You two got out just fine."
"she is right about that." Jonathan agreed
"she is also right." Jonathan agreed, laughing
"how much longer until your house?" Nancy asked, changing the topic
Luckily, no one was driving Hawkins roads, letting us do practically whatever we wanted. We made it to the byers fairly quickly, and were already setting up everything
We all worked together to get as many Christmas lights hooked up as we could, hoping it would alert us if the monster decided to make an appearance. When that was done, we split up and worked on separate projects. I grabbed a few knives from the kitchen and put them in easy access places
Nancy situated a few chairs around before watching Jonathan with the bear trap. I crouched down beside her
Jonathan finished nailing the trap to the ground, giving us a nod. Nancy went off to set an alarm while I grabbed the gasoline cans
I dumped gasoline all the way down the hallway, making sure to especially douse the bear trap. With extra gas. I created a little path into the living room, just in case we had to light it up from there
"woah there," I said, amazed, noticing what was doing there. "Make me one when you're at it."
Jonathan chuckled. I took the bat away from him and started swinging it around. It was heavier than a normal bat, but lighter than I'd thought it would be. I put it back in his hands when I noticed Nancy
"do you really think a gun will work?" Nancy asked, keeping her voice low
"it better." I stated, taking my gun out and loading it before tucking it behind my back. Nancy doing the same, loading the last bullet in before I helped her tuck it into her waistline. "We'll see how long Jonathan's bat can last." I laughed
"hey, could you guys come help?" Jonathan called, no longer in the living room. We followed his voice to the hallway where he was finishing the bear trap. Nancy grabbed the other end and the two pulled
I placed the clip in the middle, taking careful precaution to not harm myself. We all stepped away, admiring our work
"are we ready?" Nancy whispered, glancing at each of us
"definitely. That demogorgon is gonna have one hell of a time trying to get in her," I chuckled, patting Jonathan on the back
"I agree." Jonathan stated. "Let's do this."
As Jonathan went to the kitchen, Nancy and I stayed behind in the living room. My weight shifted from foot to foot as adrenaline started to build up
"there's gonna be a lot of blood for this stupid thing." I joked
Jonathan came back with three sharp, sharp knives. He handed each of us one, keeping his down near his side
"remember-" Jonathan started
"straight into Will's room," Nancy interrupted. "And-"
"don't step on the trap."
"wait for the yo-yo to move," I muttered
"then..." Jonathan flicked open his lighter, displaying the flame for all to see. He flipped down the lid. "Alright."
This was it. The fight. This fucker was gonna die. The adrenaline kicking in. We were about to fight a monster that got its name from a board game. Two sophomores and one junior. How much badass can this get?
"you ready?" Jonathan asked
Nancy and I nodded. "ready."
I gripped the knife handle with such intensity that my knuckles turned white. The cool steel was pressed against my non-dominant hand, quietly waiting to cut through
"on three. One" Jonathan said
"three." I interrupted, swiftly drawing the blade across my skin. I dropped the weapon on the floor. Dark red blood flooded my hand and dripped down to the floor
"where's the bandage?" I asked
"right here." Jonathan tossed me the roll of gauze. I grabbed it with my uninjured hand and sat on the couch, carefully wrapping it to contain the blood. Nancy and Jonathan were on the other couch, carefully addressing each other's wounds. "Love being a third wheel." I mumble
"you guys doing okay?" I asked, tying off the bandage as best as I could
"yeah, these bandages should stop the blood flow." Nancy instructed. Her hand was already wrapped, and she was focusing on Jonathan now
"when do you think it's coming?"
She shrugged. "Can't be too long now."
"yeah, with this much blood, I'm sure that thing will come running." Jonathan added
I was about to let the two do their own thing when something creaked in the house.
"did you hear that?" Nancy muttered, casting her eyes everywhere around the room
There was a long pause before Jonathan mumbled, "it's just the wind."
"the wind named demogorgon." I mocked
"don't worry," Jonathan whispered, no doubt to Nancy. "My mom, she said the lights speak when it comes."
"blinks." He corrected. "Think of them as alarms."
I watched nancy as she finished wrapping Jonathan's bandage. Sne placed the tape on, her fingers lingering for just a little too long. Jonathan's hand slowly curled around Nancy's as he whispered. "Nancy."
"yeah?" She muttered back
The pair leaned closer together, making me feel extremely uncomfortable. If they made out, I was going to call it quits and leave
Before the pair could get any closer, something crashed against the door. Jonathan and Nancy both jumped as I got up, fear flashing in everyone's eyes.
