Let's discuss story creation
I am currently in the process of writing a story for a game I am creating. I'd say so far it is coming along well but there are times when I get stuck. What I'd like to do here is just air out some things and hopefully get my gears going once again.
My story is focusing on one character, the player character, his actions, and the people around him. It is a very self contained story I will say. I was initially going to have more but I realized that it would have taken much too long to create all of the little intricacies necessary to make the story good. Small character quirks, proper character development, and political landscapes just to name a few things I need to think about as I write this story. It is a very involved process and best taken a bit at a time in order to make sure everything is good. Of course that's not to say I couldn't go back and change anything to make things even better since, I could, but I'm trying to make it so that I don't have to do that. Even if it is a futile effort.
Oh! I've forgotten to tell you the setting. The general time period that this story takes place in is somewhere between the medieval age and the industrial age. So there are kings and kingdoms as well as technology, not as advanced as you might think but it exists. I say kings and kingdoms but this story is contained in only one kingdom so it's easier for me to write, it's only my first one after all. There is also a power innate to every person alive that lets them conjure things from their imagination. I think it's interesting and I hope the players do as well.
I haven't come up with any names for the characters yet, it's all placeholder names at the moment based on their role. Things like Knight, Doctor, Shopkeep, names like that. I think that's my current issue. I want to name these characters before I write more about the story. I know what they look like, I know how they would act, but I still don't know their names. Which just leaves a sad impression. I had a name for the player character but I decided to scrap it since I decided to change the design of the villain and the name wouldn't make sense with the new villain design. I'm wondering if I should name these characters with names that have meaning or if I should name them whatever I feel is appropriate. A name is important but in the story it's not the most important thing, that would be the color of the character.
There is a lot for me to think about as I write. What events should happen, what kind of quests should I create, will anybody die, how would everyone in the conversation respond, in what order should these things happen? For now though, I suppose I should name these characters before I continue. Get to know them a bit better.
