Round 4 Ninomiya, my beloved ☃️
tried isometric art for the first time, and I had to dedicate it to the series that's currently taking over my brain 🎃💜

For a Shounen jump series I feel like World Trigger has flown completely under the radar of my focus for years.
I didn’t even realise it was a shounen jump series until I tried reading it after binging the show.
But it’s so good?? The plot makes sense. Osamu is probably one of the more normal shounen protagonists. Everyone is friends. Yet there is no power of friendship. There is no magic training arc to cure all their problems. It’s also kinda dark if you dwell on the threat of the neighbours. However the children are safe and not forced to live this lifestyle?? Honestly that’s the most shocking part to me. Lots of action series tend to overlook the toll fighting on the frontlines takes on the youth.
The world building is amazing! It’s so detailed and immersive. The concept of triggers and Trion is really cool.
Also I find it fascinating how the border agents are all so interconnected and chill with each other. It’s especially evident the higher the rank. I mean there are some abrasive personalities but no one is outright a bully.
The squads are also so interesting. I love their dynamics. You can tell these squads are formed organically and WANT to work with each other. Plus people come and go frequently. Some agents quit their team and form a new one and there’s no bad blood.
The rank wars are also so good! Especially in season 2 and 3.
Yuma: Cooking is harder than I thought ≡3≡
I'm obsessed with kikuchihara in general, obviously. nasty little hater who absolutely cannot allow something to pass in front of them without saying something rude. but I'm like Really obsessed with whatever their thing with mikumo is.
they KEEP seeking him out to be a hater at him specifically. like maybe in the beginning it was cos they were mad at usami?? but mikumo is, yk, showing a lot of hubris by even trying to make A rank in one season. and kikuchihara kind of seems like they want his team to make it! they keep texting him first! to give him advice under the guise of making fun of him! the novelty of someone with unshakable self-confidence even without being "strong" seems to compel kikuchihara. they want to study him like a bug.
they like him! they like him! they're always texting him and giving him advice and telling him 'don't disappoint my captain' and making sure the people who need to hear about his teammate being in danger hear about it!! I am constantly tearing my hair out about this!! it would torment me so much less if this were a situation where I could simply say "I ship it" but that is NOT what is going on!!!

We finally get some information about why exactly Miwa is like *that* about neighbors. It's one of those things I think World Trigger handles really well. Like, it doesn't ever treat their xenophobia as an objectively good thing, and more often than not it's even shown to be making people act against their own best interests. It's shown as being as unreasonable and destructive as it really is. But at the same time it doesn't just use this just to condemn it outright but to examine what might lead people to be this way. And it leverages it's sprawling cast of characters extremely well in order to examine all kinds of different perspectives on the issue.
At the end of the day I do think World Trigger's overall take on this is that xenophobia is just not helping anybody and has no place in society. But it respects it's audience enough to actually allow some amount of complexity into the conversation.
Mind you, not a whole lot of complexity. At the end of the day the problem with Miwa is one that's spawned from misunderstanding and grief, it's a rationalization of an irrational conclusion. He has just cause to hate a specific handful of neighbors from a single nation, and turning that towards the entirety of the neighborhood out of blind hatred results in clearly self-destructive behavior.
But there's some interesting groundwork that gets laid for his future development during the end of the Aftokrator arc so I'm pretty sure he's not always going to remain xenophobia's strongest warrior.
Miwa is one of the characters I dislike the most from this series, but at the same rime I'm very interested in seeing where Ashihara takes him as the story progresses.

round 6 in a nutshell
Sniper cats
rewatching World Trigger. I forgot how gay it was. Osamu straight up says "hey Yuma. I know that we've only known you for like five days, but I can't help but notice that you aren't doing anything with your life right now. Mind if I borrow it for a bit?"
And then Yuma responds with "while its true that we've only know each other for like five days, your kind yet stubborn nature has compelled me. Sure. Why not? From this moment on my life is yours to do whatever you want with. One condition, though. You have to be my boss" and then throughout the story he occasionally makes these little remarks like "I'd do anything my captain (osamu) asked me to."
Like bro what? I really don't think that Osamu fully realizes the weight of the loyalty he somehow managed to earn from Yuma. I don't think he could realize it. From his perspective he cringefailed his way into b rank while Yuma did all the work. "And now Yuma would kill or die for me" is just not a conclusion that would ever occur to Osamu based on the avaliable evidence.
And like, what's going on here from Yuma's perspective? I get that he was a man on the brink when the story started, pursuing a sincerely suicidal plan, and then said plan failed and he was left with absolutely nothing, but I still feel like there has to be more going on here. He decided that he would follow Osamu through hell and back the very same minute that Osamu asked anything of him at all.
It's like, combat is all Yuma has ever known. He doesn't see any future for himself at all, but he especially can't imagine a peaceful one. But he's not a bad kid. He doesn't go out of his way to hurt people. Osamu has proven to be a pretty decent person, willing to sacrifice himself to save the lives of relative strangers. Maybe, the way Yuma sees it, yeah he's a weapon, but if he follows Osamu at least he'll be a weapon pointed in the right direction. He'll fight because it's all he knows how to do, but osamu would only ever ask him to fight for worthy causes. Y'know?
Anyway. The point is that Yuma accepted helping Osamu as his new purpose in life after knowing him for less than a week, and that's A Lot, no matter how you look at it.
