Unemployed friend: Dude we should open a Steely Dan themed bar. The drinks will all be named after different songs. We can call it "Black Cow"
Me (dreamed of this exact scenario playing out leading to the bar burning down with him in it leaving me with the insurance money): Sure

Opinion on electric cars. All I know about them is that when I was growing up I saw everyone worshipping them as a step further into making solarpunk reaI but I have 0 idea if they're currently on their way to becoming actually affordable or if they're actually good. Just asking the nearest marxist car connoisseur
so i cant really tell you much about specific models or what their specs are because to be honest EVs just dont really interest me very much but i can get into some issues they have as a whole
i do think eventually we are going to switch to EVs like as a society. there might be the odd enthusiast car here and there that will stay IC but i think most commuter cars are gonna be EVs pretty soon.
however as it stands, they aren't really a viable solution for people in a lot of places. i cannot vouch for how it is everywhere, but in the US our infrastructure simply is not set up for it. at-home charging, for example, is not an option for a lot of people here and I'm sure the same is true in a lot of countries.
there's also the fact that a lot of EVs have some pretty serious problems. the elephant in the room being that lithium-ion battery fires are extremely difficult to put out and like to spontaneously reignite hours later.
chinese EVs are miles ahead of pretty much anyone else and several of them do not use lithium-ion batteries. this means they are less likely to run into the ol "fire that is immune to firemen" problem. this is very promising! but unfortunately we don't get chinese evs here in the US (thanks trump!) and you better believe that musk will fight tooth and nail to keep it that way for as long as possible. there's also the toyota mirai which is hydrogen powered but charging stations for these are incredibly difficult to find and they are expensive as hell to fill up.
so to answer your question, are they good? some of them are. are they on their way to being more affordable? maybe! but they've still got a long way to go. i suspect it'll be at least another decade before they are truly affordable and an actual feasible option. and even then it would vary from place to place.
Something that was neglected to be mentioned in this response was that electric cars are only an improvement in terms of how they're powered and their emissions.
Electric cars, for the most part, inherit pretty much all of the actual problems with cars: needing massive space to be dedicated to their infrastructure that's only partially multipurpose (trucks and motorcycles can use it, but that's all transportation), primarily having a usecase for individuals such as families which leads to events like congestion, and the expectation that people will have cars still produces bad city design that is at best uncomfortable to walk or at worst actively hostile to pedestrians.
Any actual improvements on the front of EVs is modernization of preexisting technologies that can make smaller vehicles more viable so large swathes of lands aren't needed for roads, or to upgrade services such as trains so they can more easily cope with passenger counts. I don't have numbers but I feel like a shift to all EVs under the current way of cars being used in the mainstream would be worse environmentally than a restructuring around public transit with only fossil fuels, just because of how wasteful private transport is and how harmful it is to urban planning and living.
the reason i neglected to mention any of that is because it's a given and i assumed anyone following me wouldn't need to be told that lol
Its also a lot more likely that EVs will become widely used and have their infrastructure expanded in the next decade, than that all of car centric infrastructure will be dismantled and re formatted with public transit in mind. And the question was about EVs and not about cars broadly, so it tracks to me that you'd answer the question asked instead of a much wider question on the topic.
But I'm probably going to be a IC creep until they make an electric with a clutch and a manual transmission but why would you ever make that its totally pointless.
