Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistlestop Café is one of my all-time favourite films, and I’ve watched it about a hundred times. OK, maybe six or seven. An argument could be made for eight. Anyway, my point is, I’ve watched it quite a lot. And each time, I’ve wondered what actual fried green tomatoes taste like. . Presumably, pretty darn good, given how popular they seem to be. . After years of wondering, I finally got to try them in 2013. Not in Alabama. Not in New Orleans. But in Chiang Mai, Thailand. . Now, at this point, I should point out that the closest I’ve been to the American deep south is Los Angeles, which is to say not that close, and I’m absolutely certain that there are people in Chiang Mai who would tell me that the food at Miguel’s is as close to being authentically American/Mexican as raw phad Thai is… well, Thai! However, it doesn’t matter – the food tasted great, and didn’t make me ill. Surely that’s all that’s required? 😉 . I make no claim that these vegan fried green tomatoes are the same as you’d find in Alabama; for example, the cornmeal I have access to here might be vastly different. The sunflower oil I use to fry them in may impart a different taste. But I’m confident that you’ll love them regardless. . What could be better than vegan Nutella straight from the jar? . Apart from an intravenous drip. . Nutella liqueur, of course. Vegan Nutella cream liqueur. . Or, more properly, vegan chocolate hazelnut cream liqueur. . Oh. My. Glob. . Guys, guys, this is amazeballs. . Back in my pre-vegan days I loved cream liqueurs; Baileys, Amarula, Mozart Chocolate Cream… but once I became vegan, they became off-limits. But at Christmas, when we spend time with friends and family, and the liqueurs come out, I can’t help but have a few pangs. . OK, it’s happened once. Or maybe twice. But my point is that cream liqueurs just feel like an essential part of Christmas, don't they? . Assuming you have a degree of self-control, and don’t just quaff it straight from the bottle (and no one would blame you if you did), this liqueur is fantastic as a base for cocktails or poured over vanilla (n)ice cream. This time of year can be cold and damp and miserable, but for me, there are two things which make me forget all that, and really and truly appreciate midwinter; looking out of my kitchen window, and seeing snow-topped Alps, and mulled wine. . Mulled wine, or kuhano vino as it’s called in Slovenia, is surely the greatest winter quaff known to humankind. I adore it, I really do (and yet curiously, I only ever want to drink it during the winter). . Speaking of winter, Slovenia is, in my opinion, THE best place to be during the cold season. It’s the stuff that fairy tales are made of. In fact, living in Slovenia for a couple of years was a quite literally childhood dream come true for me. And my heart sorely misses it now I am back in Britain. . Because there are some odd people around who don’t actually enjoy wine (I know, right!), I’m also including a traditional French recipe for Cidre Chaud à la Cannelle (hot cinnamon cider). . Aromatic, sweet, and soft, my vegan rose-flavoured Turkish Delight is really simple to make, and is a luxurious treat any day of the year… not just at Christmas time! . As a child living with my grandparents, Christmas meant one thing… well, actually, it meant a lot of things – but what I remember most vividly is being allowed to have a snowball (advocaat and lemonade), and the welcome appearance of the large round wooden boxes of rose and lemon Turkish Delight that made their way into our home every December. . For some reason, we only ever had Turkish Delight at Christmas time but for me, those soft, icing sugar-covered, delicately-flavoured rose and lemon cubes of confection heaven were the best thing ever. Better than the family visits, better than all the Elvis films on TV, better than the huge pillowcase-full of presents at the end of my bed. . Plus, I was a huge fan of the Narnia stories – and in particular, Jadis – so I guess it was only right that I should love Turkish Delight so much. . Today would have been my gran's 108th birthday, and I can't think of a better way to remember her than by sharing a recipe of something she loved so much! .
