Most people would be considered insane when admitting that high school was the best time of their lives, or sad. Perhaps he was both since high school was indeed the best part of his life so far, it wasn’t that his mind displaced the memories of hours of studying and hard work and the nerve-wrecking exams and the grief at the times when a student tried to kill him or herself. If you thought those things away his life would have been considered perfect. He would have been considered perfect. He was both the ideal friend, lover- even the ideal son in law. He was handsome, religious, athletic and got excellent marks for his exams. The brightest future of them all. But it was taken from him, six years ago exactly 3 days from now.
But he didn’t miss it as much. Moving to Seoul definitely was the right decision. Living on his own is still a little difficult since he didn’t have such opportunity before; he was the precious child of his parents and he had a brain injury which according to them meant they had to spend as much time as they could looking out for him: bullshit. But there were days when he longed for the things of his past, his friends who all kind of separated after graduating, his former girlfriend, his faith in god but mostly the person he used to be.
He heard someone call out his name and thought he had gone insane, he hadn’t met much people yet and this definitely wasn’t the voice of one of the plagues he had to deal with at home; yet it sounded vaguely familiar and for a moment made him believe his mind was playing tricks on him; were delusions one of the 8394 possibly side effects for the medicine he was trying out.
But then he heard it again, louder, and turned around looking straight into the eyes of Yunho. He aged of course, should be nearing his thirties, but he definitely looked similar to how he looked before. “Yunho.” He uttered, blinking in disbelief before turning around and moving over to the male (not running but surely not walking either). “Yunho.” He repeated, this time audible for the other to hear. “Hyung. What are you doing here?”
The crowd continued to move even as Yunho paused for a moment, his lips curving into a pleased grin at the recognition etched over the other's face. It was who he had thought it had been- an old, familiar face in a throng of strangers. Who would have thought he'd find the other in a bustling city hours from the place where they had grown up. Tucking his crutches beneath his shoulders, he swung his body forward to meet Jaerim on the sidewalk.
For a moment, there was no words in his mouth, an odd sort of shyness to the greeting. He hadn't exactly left home leaving contacts for anyone to track his whereabouts. Joining the military had been a fresh start and he certainly had not expected to see anyone from his past here in Seoul. "I'm stationed in Incheon," he found himself explaining, shifting his weight and slipping both crutches beneath one arm to lean against as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"You look... the same. In a good way," he chuckled with a friendly inclination of his head. He had briefly looked the other over and been reminded of the younger, fresh faced and sharp tongued friend he had messed around with in the school halls. It was true, Jaerim still looked like Jaerim. At least to him anyways. Sure he had grown and his features had become more defined, like his own had through the years, but he had still recognized him from halfway down the block.

Yunho awoke with a strange knot in the bottom of his stomach. He lay in bed for a while, palm resting against his navel and thinking. It was an uncomfortable sensation, vaguely nauseating but yet he didn’t feel all that sick. Exhaling softly, he chalked it up to being nervous to train on his ankle again and pushed it aside as he dressed neatly in his uniform.

The water felt cold today, seeping through his weather gear and sending shivers up his spine. He was tired, but still able to keep up with his comrades during drills. Something still felt wrong however, almost as if he had forgotten something- but what?
1000 Hours
During the break, Yunho slipped away to check his phone. There were a few alerts related to his cousin and he clicked on them curiously. ‘Missing,’ he mused, fighting the sinking feeling in his chest. Shaking his head, he took out his phone. Yunho couldn’t focus. He slipped during a drill and nearly twisted his ankle again. One of his officers held out their hand and he pushed it away. The feeling of dread burrowed deeper into his chest as he anxiously checked the time over and over again.
1700Hours
There ate no messages or alerts on Yunho’s phone. He picks at his dinner, appetite missing.

Their boots are not polished,’ he first thought when the officers approached. A stupid detail in the midst of things, really, but something he noticed as they introduced themselves. “Have you had any contact with your cousin, Choi Jinri?” So she is missing… A sour taste flooded his mouth. “We’re doing everything possible to find her.” His fist connected suddenly with the solid part of the man’s jaw, before he realized he had let it fly. Someone checked him into the wall, hard, and then pinned his arms behind his back. He fought their hold, throwing his own comrades aside and bolting for the deck to empty his stomach into the sea.
2100 Hours
“We understand, we won’t press charges,” he could hear them saying as he heaved over the rail. No one dared to touch him, maybe they were afraid. He prayed. To God, to the sea… He didn’t know who. Jinri-yah… I’d rather drown than see you hurt. Where are you… where are you?

Yunho didn’t see much of anyone in his past aside from his cousin. Truth be told, joining the military was part of a grand scheme to escape it all. Beneath the outer image of being glad to continue in his father and grandfather’s footsteps, he had buried the need for separation from his younger years in a concealed cloak of ‘honor’ and ‘family legacy’. It wasn’t that he’d had a poor childhood, devoid of the things that he loved or wanted. No, that wasn’t it at all. It was very much the opposite- a strange paradox that left him grasping for an understanding of his own thoughts and feelings on the matter.
He passed a stranger, lifting his chin as they walked by, projecting his new self for the world to see. A child peered at him curiously, a woman hurried by without a second glance, an older gentleman tipped his head in approval at the uniform; these were people Yunho would never see again. It was interesting when you looked at it that way. One day, one more person coming and going. Even his closest childhood friends had come and faded over the years. Even his closest comrades would do the same. How anyone every found someone who lasted through the years was incredible in and of it’s self.
His eyes flickered up again, scanning the sea of faces until they locked one that of a man. There was something… familiar. And in a moment, he was back in Ulsan with the sunshine on his face and a backpack weighing down his shoulders. Girls in pleated skirts flounced by with their hair rippling in the gentle breeze. He was walking up familiar steps, searching for someone, before a name left his lips. Jaerim.
It was impossible. His friend from childhood, thousands of miles away, here in Seoul? He turned, the back of the other male's head quickly disappearing into the crown. Leaving. He had to see, he had to know if it was possible, to stop the man before he lost sight of him. Weaving through the throng, he called out the name again. "Jaerim!"

Changmin watched carefully, biting at his lip as he watched the older man try and navigate with his crutches. He had been on crutches plenty of times and by watching the other he knew it was their first time without even asking. Especially since he didn’t have any padding on the crutches for under his armpits or his hands, both were most likely going to bruise, no matter how macho he was.
"Less than a week?" He asked trying not to look so depressed. After all they had just met and he was still trying to get to know the other, seems like they didn’t have a lot of time to form a friendship. "Wait…you what?" He said shaking his head glancing at the other’s foot once more. "You’re lucky you didn’t break it." He said honestly in a soft voice, unsure how the other would take his words.
Frowning a bit as the other refused a cab he just glanced at his crutches again, feeling a bit bad as he knew he was going to be sore later. “Alright…But…If you want one at anytime…I’ll pay.” He nodded his head and started a slow stride next to the other. Maybe he could get him some oven mitts to wrap around the top and some padded gloves for his hands.
"Five days," he replied, carefully hopping down off the sidewalk and into the crosswalk. It was getting a little easier with practice, but Yunho still much preferred being in tip top shape as opposed to limited by a silly sprain. "It's a short mission. Well, sort of. A week at sea." He mentioned the time casually, noticing the way in which Changmin had seemed a bit down by the news. "But I'll have my phone until we leave Korean waters. And e-mail after that.
Gripping the handles, he leaned to the side and pointed his crutch at a spot up the sidewalk a little ways. "That the cafe?" he questioned with a grin to try and lighten the mood a bit. It was the first time he'd started a friendship with someone outside of his family or unit. If he thought about it, he never felt as if he needed to do so but this felt refreshing in a sense; it reminded him of forming new relationships as he had done in his childhood.
"It's not too far, I think I can handle it." He looked sideways at Changmin with another smile. "Although you'e been very thoughtful," he commented. "I'm just a stubborn sort of guy. I like to make my own path, you know? Sure it gets me in trouble sometimes but mostly it's panned out well." He continued his determined gait towards their destination as if to prove his point.
